    What da heck is dis?!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys, I'm doing a slew of work on my 2003 B6 1.8t FWD, including timing belt service, new valve cover gasket, emissions simplification and a catless downpipe. I found this silly little box that I cannot seem to discern a purpose to. It appears to be apart of the vacuum system but isn't listed in the diagrams posted here or AudiWorld.

It appears to be bolted to the passenger side of the engine with only one line coming out of it. The single line shares a tee fitting with the bypass valve and intercooler piping. Is this component necessary or can I remove it and further simplify my engine bay?

Please excuse the mess that my valvecover gasket has made, it'll be cleaned up once I get everything finished.

    that is the boost reservoir.
it's just a place for the system to dump a little extra pressure so you don't spike as much.

'dis' is called a Hemholtz Resonator, if you reserch it its a deviced used by the factory to reduce certain sounds the turbo can make.

in that first picture it appears that you may have a minor boost leak.

I always thought this crap was vented back to the air box. If you take it off do you get to hear the bypass valve release?

I didn't hear a sound difference when I ripped mine out when I was running my 007dv with a open air filter. I still heard the same faint whisssp sound.

if you remove it you have to cap off that T as you see in this pic. When I removed mine i was in the middle of doing inner cooler piping so i just didnt drill a spot for the hose to come off so it wasn't hard at that stage.

I didn't notice any noise difference, or any performance upgrade. The butt dyno never lies.

Yea, I've been chasing that boost leak for awhile now. Thanks for helping me locate it. ;)

I'll get a male/male barb fitting and connect the DV without the T. I wasn't going to mess with any of that until I saw the mess my valvecover made.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it. Further weight savings FTW!
