    Flywheel Worth It?

Got quoted from a shop that specializes in performance work on VW's and Audi's.

$1600 installed AWE kit w/ aluminum flywheel
$1200 installed for southbend stg 3 (no flywheel)

My question: Is it really worth it to get the lightweight flywheel? How much of a difference can you really notice and is that difference worth $400?

    Re: Flywheel Worth It?

from my understanding, you're better off with the stock flywheel. Just get it resurfaced. (guess the lightweight one has clutch chatter)

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong... as I still do not have an upgraded clutch

    Re: Flywheel Worth It?

if youp go to light you might get some chatter, i think the 11lb one will chatter, but 16 i dont think will or not very noticable. Stg3 is a bit beffy if your not goig BT ot BAT. Are you even chipped? If the flywheel is fine have it resurfaced adn get a cheaper clutch and call it a day.

    Re: Flywheel Worth It?

The 16lb will chatter with the ac on. Get the southbend 20lb option if you want to do it. These help the car rev up quicker. This helps a lot in this thin air. Very driveable, I have no issues with mine other than noise....and the fact that the FE and 16lb steel fly can't hold up to the power of my car lol

    Re: Flywheel Worth It?

I have a 9lb Flywheel and it chatters like mad with the AC on. But without the AC on I don't even really notice it anymore.

If I have to do it all over again, I would go 16lb billet steel flywheel. Talk to Greg or Mike at DTH about it.

    Re: Flywheel Worth It?

Well i thought stage 3 southbend was a bit overkill for a car that won't ever go BT. I probably won't go past stage 1+. However, i said that to jeff on audigeeks who has sold a number of people here their southbends' and he said the following.

There is also a Stage 1 and 2, but they are basically stock clutches with different style linings. I would not recommend neither of them unless your car is literally bone stock for daily commuting. The Stage 1 is an OEM replacement, while the Stage 2 is the same replacement that uses kevlar linings. For this reason, I never sell Stage 1 and 2 clutches.

yeah.. I also thought I'd never go past stage 1. Good luck with that, and hide your money.. it's the only way to stop from going bigger. (I have recently been dreaming of a BAT setup.. which would consist of selling my entire current setup :(

MEEEE TOOOO! I won't do it yet though. Maybe when I'm out of college, I'll rebuild the motor and talk to Shawn for some parts

I wish I would've gone 30 series and ran low boost 'til I can build the motor.

    Re: Flywheel Worth It?

Feel bad I couldn't find a lift to use to install that cluch for you. Would have saved you another $300... Now I'm wondering who I can con to let me do my own clutch install on their lift now cause that shop my buddy works at is going out of business.

Sorry Clint, I have a broken back, I don't do tranny installs on jack stands

Yeah, it's starting to get to me. My GTRS is fun and all, but I got used to the power so quickly.. got used to it faster than I did with my stage 1 flash. I think I'm retarded

    Re: Flywheel Worth It?

Haha, CO AVANT, let me know when you have time to take me for a spin and i'm game. Foco isn't that big, i'm sure you live less than 10 mins from me.

As for not being satisfied with 1+,, it's not that i can't affort to go BAT but i think it would be a better idea for me to buy a house.

But yeah it's too bad you couldn't lock down a lift for the install. I got my quotes out of SCR performance in loveland because i've met those guys and they came it at $4 more an hour than your buddy.

I may have a hook up for another clutch installer and on apr stuff but i never know if my friend is all talk until i see the bill. He tends to run his mouth about what he can really do for me and for how much.

    Re: Flywheel Worth It?

No comment on the SCR shop. I don't need a lift to install the apr stuff for you. Shoot me your # on pm, might be out driving around this weekend.

    Re: Flywheel Worth It?

I just overnited stage 3 southbend with the LWFW. (steel). Cause the guy that installed the stage 2 said my flywheel was OK, so i didn't change it out, clutch started to slip under boost. But now we found out that he over torqued the pressure plate which warped it. So now I have to put the new setup in.

Am i gonna like the stage 3 with LWFW. Or is it going to chatter to much. Also went with single mass instead of daul mass. All this gonna work with the KO4 upgrade on the car?
    Thanks

It will be fine (minimal gear rattle) if you don't run the ac.

    Bring it over to CT

I've got two clutch jobs, a GTRS install, two timing belt jobs and a few others lined up to do in the next couple months. Going to be picking up a proper transmission jack for my friend's lift to make my life easy.
