    Winter question again...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey.
So i got my hands on b5 s4 wheels.

    They are 17" and 7.5" i think.

What size of tires should i run for winter ?

What is the best/cheapest place to buy tires?

What are some decent tires ?

My car is usp + H&R springs

    Thanks.

    Re: Winter question again...

I wouldn't use them for winter. I'd use the smallest wheel possible with the smaller tire possible.

What's size wheels are on the car right now?

18x8 with 235/40 all season tires that suck d*ck in winter.

So what do you suggest. You saying 17 will be bad for winter ?

    Thanks

    Re: Winter question again...

well for some reason larger wider tires are always what people recommend not to get as winer wheels. I never researched as to why but that's just how it is. But i do know that rubber actually sticks to ice, it's just that typically either the ice is wet or your tires are wet which makes things a little slippery. But the smaller wheel thing is a recommendation for snow driving since you can't really do much for ice except studded tires.

17's are fine, if you get the right size. 205/50r17 would be the recommended size. I wouldn't use a nice wheel for winter because salt, ruts, etc will ruin the wheel. My preference is steel wheels.

Why go with 205/50r17 vs. 225/45 r17? Thinner tires are better because they will cut through snow and slush better than a wider tire.

    Re: Winter question again...

^^ that's what i thought it was. Because more surface area doesn't do you any good on conditions where you have no grip anyway.

More pressure per unit of area on the tire. The tire ends up cutting through the snow deeper so you in turn have less snow or possibly no snow between tire and pavement.

    Re: Winter question again...

Again it all depends where you live and if it really snows the entire season in your town or you just looking for winter tires just to hit the mountain for skiing, snowboarding or other snow activites only at the mountain. Because thats my situation, i have 17 inch stock avus sport wheels and im about to pick up some winter tires that are 225/45/17 because all i need them for is to go up to the local mountain to snowboard but it rarely ever snows in my town during winter and if it does it only sticks around for a few days.

With that said you need to decided what exactly you're gonna use them for and as mentioned above less tire surface equals better grip. I dont have much concern because im only gonna use them for going up to the mountain every two weeks or so!

I run Dunlop Winter Sport M3s - great traction in ice/snow. Narrower is better (think a knife thru butter vs. a blunt edge).

for the 7.5" wide wheels, it would be slightly stretched. 205 is fine with the 7" wheels.

Along those lines, you can use OEM, 225/45r17 also... all the smaller sizes I suggested will make the speedo/odometer read faster.

I go to Mt. Hood Meadows, i have a season pass there and have been going there for past 9 yrs. I was skiing for like 6 and last 3 yrs i been snowboarding and my Avant has been a dream come true. Taking the quattro to the mountain is a big smile on my face. As one of my friends said " Driving an Audi wagon to the mountain, now thats style". lol.

I never been up to Stevens but i heard its pretty nice. If you ever come down this way let me know, heck maybe we can hit the slopes together.

^^ yeah for sure dude. I've been to hood once but i've always wanted to do their spring or summer lodging stuff. And yeah steven's is cool, overpriced but still good. But they have expansion plans because they were bought out by whistler. Go to their website and check it out. You're gonna definitely have to get up there once they finish expanding their terrain.

    Re: Winter question again...

^^^Oh for sure, Im always open for new things. Hood is somewhat overpriced but they do have two major lodges, Timberline and meadows and then of course the biggest known night skiing is Skibowl but i never been there. I usually stick to Meadows.

    Re: Winter question again...

Well Hood has 2 different season passes you can get. If you want Timberline Lodge then its called the fusion pass for $300 and its combined with Skibowl for night.

Or the Meadows season pass which is a group buy depending on your age but mine is 3x$333. Its what i been getting for the past 3 yrs.

    age:
    7-14 2x2=$222 each person
    15-22 3x3=$333 " "
    23-64 4x4=$444 " "

Oh and standard day pass is $59 and night pass is $25. so prices arent so bad!

Me and a friend have started running our own little business out of his house and everything for it. We bought all our own tuning supplies and basically made a home made hot belt wax machine in his garage. So we charge people we know like $10 for a full tune and an extra $5 to drill and mount bindings haha. If you have the resources i really recommend trying it. We made pretty good money last season
