Question 2.7T 6spd going into an A6 Avant.......

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I’m in a situation that I’m unsure about…..I have a friend who just picked up an s4 with 86k miles and wants to pull the motor and do a vr6t in it…..guess who he called and asked if they wanted the engine and etc??? I haven’t seen an A6 Avant with this swap and for that matter any swap but am curious as to if anyone has done it or how possible it is to do it. Again, he doesn’t need anything from the s4 other than the shell….he said he could do it and gave me a vary reasonable price for the motor installed and said it should only take a week….of course at first I’m all about it but in the back of my head I’m worried and wondering why I haven’t seen more if its not that big of a deal to do……he is a good mechanic…..he built his own built r32 with nitrous….300z with a ls1……and tons of mkII vr6s and a lot of other cars…..pull the trigger and finally give my “turtle with one leg trying to run backwards” some wings??!! Someone help me out with some direction........

I'm pretty sure everything would fit like it would on an A6 sedan 2.7t with manual tranny. Sedan and avants have the same eerything..except for a few body panels and extra windows.

I have always wanted to do this. Had a the Avant with the bad motor but ended up with a cheap new 2.8 so I fixed it and sold it. Next time I find one I will do it.
    Go for it.

It should be possible. You will need everything though (motor, ECU and trans).

Also, don't forget about the shared master cylinder for the brakes and the clutch. You probably will have to modify that as well. Not to mention adding the pedals from the manual car and ditching your automatic pedals and linkages.

Gonna need additional fabrication, I think the 2.8 is a 2-bolt main, and the 2.7t is a 4-bolt main. Make sure he knows that..

This is a moot point. Makes no difference. Hes not swapping out the crank or other critical engine parts

Nope! But the exhaust is going to by another issue. Maybe, even the cats. Not 100% sure. My educated guess, I would say the cats would have to engineeried for the 2.7 T engine. So, tac on cats to the laundry list.

    DO IT! We'll help!

dude, you are stealing my idea!!! LOL
Do it! and do a k04 while you are at it :)
it should be a pretty straight forward swap except fabricating pedals, odometer should be ok, but immobilizer might be a slight problem.
Good luck man! and off to the 'build' you go :D

The immobilizer system will look for the cluster that it had before in the 2.7T car. If you disable the immobilizer or have it re-coded by the dealer, you can keep your cluster.

Search motorgeek for derracuda's (sp?) 6speed A6 4.2. That should help with the transmission issues. Not sure about swapping the 2.7 engine control stuff. Maybe find a wrecked 2.7 A6 sedan?

Re: 2.7T 6spd going into an A6 Avant.......

Man, this was my future project car!!! I've been thinking about it for a long time, I need to get a nice family hauler, and always wanted a A6 avant. Just didn't really care for the Allroads.

The cluster could be an issue, unless you can get the stock one that came with the motor. I don't think you'd have to fab any pedals, because the A6 sedan came with a manual 2.7TT.

And why cant you just get a A6 2.7TT cluster, computer, and pedal assy? You'll prolly also need the center console area out of a maunal A6.

Exhaust shouldn't be that big of a deal, again becuase the A6 already came with a 2.7TT, as did the alroad. I can't see there being much difference between the avant and sedans regarding the undercarriage.

Man, I'm excited for you!! I've been wanting to do this for a while.... Keep us posted and take alot of pics!!!

Re: 2.7T 6spd going into an A6 Avant.......

i remember when my boss dropped an a6 2.7 engine into his b5 1.8t that was 5spd stick. one problem he ran into was he needed the axles, hub, knuckle, brakes and that whole assembley from the a6. everything worked except the axles. the problem with the axles were that the a6 ones were too long so he needed to source s4 axles. im not sure if the v6 2.8 axles would work or not, but its something to look into.

Well.....i have gone ahead and decided to do a motor swap....but now i have been givin the option to do a R32 vr6 in it with the option of a turbo down the road.....they are pushing me towards the vr6 because they say its a lot more dependable than the 2.7t.....man the decisions dont get any easier.....i do love the sound of r32s

Re: 2.7T 6spd going into an A6 Avant.......

if you are going to go manual, you might have to replace the rear diff as well because it may have a different ratio than the manual tranny's front diff. easiest way would be to swap the 2.7 in, harness, ecu and prefferably an instrument cluster. 2.7 cats would be needed to make things easier, but custom would be possible and probably cheaper. keep your car an auto, and you wouldn't have to worry about pedals, master cyl, getting rid of your shift lock on the ignition cylinder, and tricking the tcm to think it's in park, so you can start your car.
