Yeah I've been registered for a year, but I'm just now getting into the Mods and Upgrades so I haven't really been on here much. This is the first car that I've thought about moding. Who makes a good chip? Sorry for my ignorance , but what is BT.

I recommend reading through the threads using the search function, or just contact shawn A4ringed18T since he has a shop there in Florida.

Re: Best Engine Mods for a 1.8tq

I have tried the search and the DIY for the B6 section. There is definitely some good info about mods that I have found, but none of them really mention MPG's after the mods. Mine is a daily driver so I don't want to lose MPG's.

Thanks for the info on the shop.

Re: Best Engine Mods for a 1.8tq

as was already suggested a chip will only do so much. but for a more significant increase in power a BT (big turbo) will give you that. but you have to pay to play and you would also need all the supporting mods to get the most out of the turbo. dont forget an upgraded clutch is nessecary.(suspension and brakes are good to look into also) my suggestion is to search through the forums more, there is a wealth of information on here you just have to look for it. search for people that have a4s like yours with the mods you are looking into and see how they like them.

Re: Best Engine Mods for a 1.8tq

your question 'what mods can i do without losing mpg' is like saying what fattening cake can i eat without gaining weight - oxymoron

if you mod your car make it go faster logic would dictate you use more gas, adding a BT (big turbo, stock turbo = K03) would cause more air hence more fuel needed

best bang for the buck is a chip which remaps your stock turbo after that probably exhaust dont bother with intake since our cars are pretty efficient other then that the only thing i can tell you if you want better mpg is get a prius

if you really want answers say i want to spend $X,xxx amount modding my car what do i do but like there going to tell you there are plenty of threads regarding this

and about the miles per gallon if you are thinking about that then maybe modding the car is not the best thing for your fuel consumption. people can tell you all day about not driving in boost and getting great gas mileage but when it comes down to it at least with me once you hear that turbo hum you just want more and there goes your gas mileage.

Thanks for the info guys. I figured a bigger turbo would make it suck more gas. I'm just trying to make it a little better than what it is. I drive over 100 miles per day so I'm not looking to make it into a 300hp car.

Do you have any suggestion on what kind of chip and exhaust?

Re: Best Engine Mods for a 1.8tq

the popular ones are APR, GIAC, REVO, neuspeed and search

they are all similar some a bit more aggressive but not too much difference
exhaust will run you $1,000 and not give you much of power difference with just stock turbo. I would argue fuel injectors would give you more power then exhaust for 1/2 the price. If you just want a bit more power do the type of chip that a local tuner offers and then drive the car like you stole it

All of the Stage 1+/Stage 2 flashes retain "near-stock" fuel efficiency. However, with the chip reflash, you'll be temped to push that k03 into boost to feel that torque spike that's so fun when running around town.

Check out APR, Revo, and GIAC

    Kirk, that's just not true.

I've been chipped (Unitronic) to stage one and earned at least 3 mpg combined. That brings me up to 34 mpg highway on 91 octane and about half in the city depending on how much stop'n'go I run across or aggressive I feel.

The word is that going K04 or GTRS/28 increases even more. Haven't come across mpg stats for larger turbos.

Thing is though, so many variables influence consumption like road surface, tyre inflation, load, hills, driving style, etc.

My two cents to the OP is that if you want reasonable fuel mileage and good DD reliability with out breaking the bank, go with a K04/tune/injectors, FMIC, exhaust/tp and a set of lighter wheels.

This fits most of your criteria:

    1) add some cool stickers
    2) take some weight out - maybe the spare tire
    3) keep a can of pringles on the passenger seat

I did the GIAC flash on my car here in Orlando. As soon as I left the shop I felt a HUGE difference. Love the way it feels. Get the same amount of mileage and I drive about 60 miles a day on the 528.

I was on 528 this morning and will be on again tomorrow and Sunday (conference at the Int'l Plaza). I loved the drive - I usually don't get highway miles. Noticed a shudder between 85 and 95 mph.

To the OP - I've heard that Stage 1 basic flash (like APR) actually gives you a little bit better gas mileage. That's what I'm planning in the next month or so. There's actually a shop near Sanford that does APR.

I did the GIAC @ Waterfest over the weekend. I want to drive everywhere now! I know it isnt THAT fast, but its sooooo much more fun to drive.
Really woke my car up (just like AWE said it would...)

Um yeah...I have the GIAC big injector file, AWE exhaust, Forge TIP, Forge DV, APR Throttle body hose and my milage between city and highway is still around 25-28. ANy of the major Tunning companies offer this programing.... pick one based on future plans since GIAC is some what limited when it comes to BT options. Enjoy..

on the highway i average 28-32 with a fully supported APR 1+

many BT people can chime in how low their mileage is because the car is so much mo funner to drive

if you are concentrating on a few MPG difference, you dont have your priorities/reality in check.. no one here spends $10-20k on their car (fully built BT/BAT) so they can save a few MPG
