    Enough thread jacking!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Alright so in recent threads i've read that a GTRS Eliminator and what not lasts between 20-30k miles! if thats true that would mean i would be buying a new GTRS core which costs as much as a K04 every 9 months! That really sucks! So i spend nearly 4k to have a BT and to step on the gas while thinking: "Well there goes a week from its life!" i don't wanna have that problem so i'm stuck! People say don't go K04 because it's a useless upgrade, oh but if u go GTRS ur gonna be buying new turbo internals every year! so there is no reliable upgrade for this car?? APR III+ is just a bargain at 5k(ya right!) and well whats left, stock? ha! what to do?

To tell you he truth, I have never heard of an APR stg III+ turbo failing which kind proves my point of going to a full GT28RS will last longer than an eliminator series turbo.

    Re: Enough thread jacking!

    1. Depends on ALL the supproting mods
    2. If you maintain you car
    3. The way you drive

    a. Do u drive 25k miles a year???
    b. Those 20k-30k is prolly average.

You should understand that with putting an aftermarket part to increase the performance will decrease the life of your engine (overall). And going that way you gotta expect for this kinda "extra" $$$

Oh, and maybe going with APR STG 3 wont get you those results, but it is a proven "bullet proof" thing with some decent #'s :)))

Right just check out the thread....

So what is it that you are changing in the GTRS when it "goes out"? The GTRS is ball bearing or journal?

If you're starting from a bone stock car you'll also need things like exhaust and intercooler upgrades, suspension, clutch, etc.

Still have it. It's a regular K04-15 tubro, not the one that Jet Jockey runs.
The kit has been working problem free for almost 2 years now.

BT setup is coming next summer probably.

    Re: Enough thread jacking!

I have a question for you where are getting info that the GTRS is only good for 25k miles. or a year of driving??

I have had mine on my car since 34k miles and im at 47K now the turbo had 8k miles on it when i bought it. so i should have to replace it now.

This is the one of the issues with these boards, that people only post when bad stuff happens, or they spend a bunch of money and want to show off their car a bit.

The garrett center housing is much more robust than the k04/k03 center housing the ball bearing turbos are designed for longer service life than journal bearings.

bottom line if you expect a car to produce twice power and remain factory like in service issues your wrong. If you take the time and increase your oil change intervals, and monitor the engine for leaks(boost, oil, coolant) you will have a fairly reliable powerful car.

    just my 2cents

    Re: Enough thread jacking!

after reading the referenced thread I want to make this spitulation. the more you push the turbo outside its effiency range the more likely it will shorten its life span. that means a GTRS more than 25 psi may not last as long as a gtrs that sees a max boost of 21 psi.

but again that all fals into the taking care of portion.

Exactly. Plus I dont see why anyone would take it as the norm when its about 1-2% of all the elims sold that might have failed. It isn't like those are all of the elims ever produced seeing that ATP is always having problems keeping up with the orders since they sell so well.

Just a little hard to beat when you can buy a 300-400chp setup that includes the turbo hardware, tuning and injectors for around $2600.

^^ya ya i know it's the truth that i'm a post whore, but i consider myself to be a caroholic, and well i can't find anything better then to sit here and read and post 6 comments per thread lol!

anyways well thats what i wanna know man! I'm excited about going GTRS, but every time something is popping up talking about how something failed! It's like i'm uncovering new secrets as time passes! so here's the question: what is the optimum boost level i should run the GTRS at while making some decent power yet prolonging its life?? are there any other secrets i should know about that will help keep it alive??

get a turbo timer and don't go WOT before your car warms up, I'm sure doing that 100% of the time could do nothing but help the life of your turbo.

GTRS should never run more than 22 PSI on the 1.8 motor. I believe this is at it's max efficiency. Besides, anymore than this it'll start blowing more hot air than make power.

You'll be set with this in addition to WMI, along with the REVO's new 550 file. This should allow for more aggressive timing and faster spool times.
