so... got my first audi fix-it-ticket... Cali Referee will be my next stop... FUCK!

so, i'm thinking... toss my k03 back in, make everything stock again, sell my GTRS, and get a gt30r?

Of course get a street legal Hi-flow cat this time i guess...

(UPDATE)... he pulled me over for the modified FMIC, then asked to pop hood...

is this for real?? i have never heard of someone getting pulled over for a "modified engine". FHP (florida highway patrol) doesnt care about crap...i think the only semi-illegal (florida law of course) thing i have on my car is limo tint on all five windows....and maybe my smoked license plate cover...my brother-in-law who is a sheriff said that was illegal but i havent been pulled over for it....sorry about your luck man! just another reason not to move to california.

Don't get me wrong, this was probably one of the cooler cops i've been pulled over by, some filipino dude... i usually get the jerkface from clairmont or mira mesa, but this guy was down in the east sd!

still gave me a referee trip.. i wanted so badly to say NO to the pop your hood thing, but i'm a puss when it comes to cops/authority... so can i Keep my FMIC when I see the Ref?

    Yes they do.

dualaudi - did you have a stock air box or were you running an open filter?
He most likely didn't write you a ticket for the FMIC but just used it as an excuse to pull you over.

Yep, that was the excuse for pulling me over. "modified" FMIC. i do not have a stock airbox.

Using the HKS filter for my 3" custom TIP... going to prob see about modifying the stock box to accomodate the custom TIP. first I need to order one, since that never came with the bill of sale...

CHP will get you every time. Got pulled over years ago in my '83 GTI and the officer asked me if I knew what GTI stood for? GTI = Get Tickets In. Wrote me up for no front plate and Euro bumpers. (Not US legal). I put the stock bumpers back on and they signed off on the ticket. Your fix will be a little more time consuming I would think. Bad break...

yeah... i wish I didn't live in cali either... i've been doing good with not being pulled over for my audi these past 3 years... i think my karma meter got used up... the honda got pulled over for a wing modification one time...

so, anyone have experience with their audi in cali with a ref? I waiting on their call back re: FMIC... I don't want to switch back to the SMIC if I don't have to.

i'm thinking maybe go completely stock for the referee and then my bi-anual smog in 2 months... just dreading the weekend to do all this...

edit....... ** shit... i only have a pc-16 ecu.... creech... do you have a stock chip? or your k03 giac?

There's a big reason why I will not move to Cali. At least not without a larger paycheck for compensation for my troubles.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck. Time to paint the FMIC black and/or cover it up.

Don't forget about the infared emissions photography they have. Somewhere in Cali there's cameras on the highway that can take an infared picture of your tailpipe and check your emissions. Supposed to be some experimental crap, but they can send you a ticket for failing CA emissions, w/o even pulling the car off the highway.

I talked to smog tech and he said as long as the car comes stock intercooled and everything is sealed correctly, you should be okay.

But the ref is going to want to see an OEM cat in there.

djwimbo, I don't think the state uses those types of cameras unless the camera can also determine the year, make, model, etc. of a car. Remember, there are cars that are exempt from smog, and different types of cars and trucks will have different emissions level reqs.

audiness, you can modify cars in cali. It's just really limited to what you can do legally. Of course, cali law is so anal now about emissions and all that stuff, almost anything worth doing would fall under the category of illegal.

And it only has partly to do with emissions. I more so blame the fast and furious era, cause that brought in one thing. Wannabe . Which quickly turned into . (replace the head banging with driver into wall, that's what it means.)

Will the ref pass/fail you bassed on the results from smog tests or do they look at the non-oem parts aswell?
Ive always been unsure of what they do, the experience with my friends and cops have always led me to wonder if a setup like mine (in CA) with just the pc16/hfc/hi flow mani will pass.

Do you think you could get away with your pc16 on k03, with stock airbox/cat, for the test

You could probably leave your K04 in there. It looks about identical, or do you think they check part numbers? It is things like your cat they will be looking at. If have stock airbox, can barely even see the turbo.

ya, i dont think they could tell about the turbo, yet cops seem to not like "modified exhaust"
Im just wondering about what the refs think about the non-oem parts

you cant run a FMIC in cali unless its CARB legal..any aftermarket FMIC on any audi will of course attract attention..this is why i have my Akipol SMIC. ive heard stories of STOCK evos getting pulled over..basically if you mod in CA either get the FMIC anodized or run DSMIC or SMIC

i'll def look into anodizing... Last time I went to the REF (for the honda) it seemed like they get down and dirty and looked over everything... - might need to go completely stock

I'll post info when I get a call back from the ref, regarding my "replacement" intercooler...

dual, if you want to borrow my gt adaptor so you can put in the stock tip for the test lemme know. you will pass with giac chip & 440's. i passed with that. i'd just put the stock intercooler when you go test. not sure if they get hardcore on the gt turbo.
