JHM 01A 5-speed (B5/B6 -A4) Manual Transmission Rebuild kit and VIDEO now available!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
We just completed putting together the 01A 5-speed Transmission rebuild kit for B5 and B6 A4 5-speeds from 1996-2004. (Actual video comes on DVD and is 1 hour and 47 minutes long!) The video will be FREE with the purchase of any of our rebuild kits and only $25 SHIPPED in the lower 48 states if you don't need a kit yet. If you get the video separately and buy a kit later we will rebate you the $25 at the time of purchase of the kit. NOTE: Video was done on an O1E 6-speed (slightly different, but very very helpful info) and in combination with a Bentley Manual the rebuild should go smoothly.

Watch the DVD video Trailer HERE Actual video comes on DVD and is 1 hour and 47 minutes long! Video has been used by many B5 S4 owners to rebuild their more complicated 01E trans, do a search. Here is a link to one of the most recent threads on how useful my DVD was. http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=205310

the price isn't bad considering thats about how much a stock used high mileage tranny goes for. so for about 600 bucks you get a pretty much newly rebuilt tranny.

    Thanks.

Unfortunately hard parts ain't cheap either. Unfortunately it just ain't cheap in general. Waaaayyy cheaper than a B5 S4 at least. I know used trannys for these cars are pretty cheap, but that is always a gamble and some people like to do it right. You can opt out for the reverse synchro and front output shaft seals and save $100+.

I do have one good core for used parts as of now and will hopefully acquire others since the trans code decides your ratio.

Yeah after shipping you would get near that. But most people can probably opt out of the reverse synchro and front output shaft seals and save $100. I would agree with you. I like rebuilding my own trans that I know the history on vs. buying a used one which you know nothing of its history and will eventually fail anyways. Plus peplacing the trans again due to a bad used one is always a pain.

Cool man. They have been quite popular with the S4 owners so far.

PM me what you are looking for on it. Need the trans code off of it too.

The thing that sucks is the shipping will jack the price up a bunch. Should cost a good $100 to $150 to ship it.

Man you people must shift with a lot more urgency than me. I have never worn out a synchronizer before even with 250K+ miles.

does anyone know of a kit that includes a FULL rebuild? my 1st gear makes a lot of noise while i drive with it, and i think i read up that it's most likely a chipped gear. sadly, this kit doesn't include gears :(

The actual gears are not cheap at all, just for 1 full gear set will cost you about the same as a good used 01A transmission. I have about 4 01A 5 speed transmissions that have a broken 3rd gear, the rest of the gears are good.

god damn that's a lot! so it's kind of pointless to rebuild this transmission then? i just really want a transmission that shifts buttery smooth, but if it's going to cost that much - a may as well have gotten an S4 instead of an A4.

S4 transmission is far from buttery smooth, no where near as smooth as the 01A.

I would go with a replacement.... Go on mnaudi.com (forum) and there are a couple part outs going on right now... dont go with the s4 6 speed, you need a lot of different components to make it work on an a4.... btw I got a replacement transmission that i bought off of a local part out installed at NurTechnik near the Cities (see you are from forest lake!) My shifts are now muuuuch better. (I blew my 2nd gear on mine last fall) Great guys at NurTechnik, and great pricing.

No kits will include gears. Gears need to be inspected upon teardown and replaced as needed. Contact JHM for actual prices or call your local audi dealer. You'll probably looking at over 500 for a gearset, maybe more. Thats pretty standard.

question is there anyway to tell if the stock transmission is still in the car. for example is there a stamp anyway that has the vin numer on it or anyways to link it to the car?

It may be more than $500 for a 1st gear set since the input 1st and 2nd gears are integral with the input shaft.
I got lucky and picked up a transmission from a friend with a blow torsen, but all the other parts that I needed were good.

So how long would it typically take to rebuild an 01A from a 99 a4 1.8tq? Are there any special tools needed? My Chilton's manual scared me...
