To convert my car to manual.

    I know I will need,
    manual transmission
    ecu
    pedal assembly
    clutch cable
    clutch

anything else? and how difficult of a time am I looking at? or am I better off putting a automatic back in there and then just selling it and buying a manual transmission a4?

I have heard the mounts are all different so that needs to be fabricated. Idk though. You also need cash. If I was to go from auto to manual I would just go 6spd since I am there or I would sell it and buy a manual.

It would probably be cheaper to buy a different car. Don't you need a new dash or is that only when going to automatic from manual? You will need a shifter and linkage unless you were counting that as part of "manual transmission."

It'd be very pricey. To do it properly, you'd have to get a manual crank shaft. Automatic cars do not run the same crank as manual transmission A4's

So... Sell the car for what it is worth, go to the bank with that money and pay it off... Hand title over to new owner...

Just buy a car with a mt... your looking at spending a lot of money for this... manual swaps are never as good as the oem thing.

just wondering. All of you who say it is pricey, have you gone through and actually calculated what the cost would be?

Do you want new or used prices? Crank alone costs around $1000 for crank and new bearings. Good clutch, around $400, flywheel $800, pedal assy close to $1000 for everything, shift rods/mechanism about $600, transmission probably $750 for a good one, new drive shafts $300, different radiator $150 and I am sure at least $500 in minor misc parts...

For $5500, I would think you could just buy a whole new car... These are estimated prices... I went through ETKA and priced these parts... If it is going to be done, just buy a whole donor car...

not too hard when you have a local yard that has only audi/vw's and a couple b5's with warranty on all parts.

I just bought a 1997 A4 2.8 Quattro 5 speed with a blown motor, to fix my exising 1996 A4 2.8 Quattro auto with a slipping trans. Do I take the engine out of the 96 and put it in the 97, or take the manual trans and other parts and swap them into the 1996? Assuming the condition on both cars are about the same, of course.

I assume you're quattro. You'll need at least the following...

01A 5 Speed Manual Transmission (with shifter, shift linkage, shift boot, shift knob)
Rear Differential (due to the 01A having a different final drive ratio then the 01V)
Prop shaft (runs from the transmission to the rear differential)
    Flywheel
    Clutch Disc
    Clutch Pressure Plate
    Throw Out Bearing

Manual Pedal Assembly (including the Clutch Pedal Position Switch and Clutch Pedal Vent Switch [for Cruise Control Deactivation])
    Clutch Master Cylinder
    Clutch Slave Cylinder
Clutch Hydraulic Line (from Brake Fluid Reservoir to Clutch Master Cylinder)
Clutch Hydraulic Line (from Clutch Master Cylinder to Clutch Slave Cylinder)

2.75l (2.906qt) of SAE 75w90 Synthetic Gear Oil (for Manual Transmission)
1.9l (2.01qt) of SAE 75w90 Synthetic Gear Oil (for Rear Differential)
DOT 4 Brake Fluid (to bleed the clutch system)

Now, for the items I'm uncertain about...

    - You might not need a new ECM as you might be able to recode your current ECM with VAGCOM to work with the 01A 5 Speed Manual Transmission.
    - You'll most likely need to swap front axles (manual and auto front axles have different part #s and may have different mounting flanges).
    - Depending on the differences in front axles, if you have to swap them you may need new front wheel hubs depending on the size and spline count of the front axles and if there is a difference between the auto and manual axles on the side that meets the front wheel hubs.

I'm sure there are more items you'll need as well (I didn't mention hardware or small items that will most likely come with other items), but those should be the major ones. If you do the swap it might not be a bad idea to pick up a nice clutch kit, a resurfaced flywheel, and a possibly a short throw shifter. I would definitely try to get the facelift style shifter and shift base and the update shift linkage (I think mid 97 or 98 is when the linkage was updated). You'll probably want to do a little R&R on some of the transmission items as well while it's out of the car. Check JH Motorsports website for information on all of the shifter and transmission linkage updates along with what items you might want to replace while the transmission is out (it has lots of information, images, and videos on the AWD transmissions).

Now, having listed all of that you may want to consider selling the car and buying a manual B5. You'll most likely spend less money and you can consider it an opportunity to upgrade to a facelift car to either the 2.8 30v or 1.8T. Just a thought.

I would imagine swapping the transmissions (and other related items) would be much easier then swapping the engines. You wouldn't have to worry about draining engine oil, coolant, etc. I'd take advantage of this opportunity (having the transmission out) to replace any items that aren't normally easy to get to that might need service, such as...

    Clutch/Flywheel
    Pilot Bearing
    Throw Out Bearing
    Engine Rear Main Seal
    Engine Mounts
    Transmission Mounts

I'd also inspect the front axles and the prop shaft to see if they need replaced (CV joints, U joint, center carrier bearing). If not I would at least add grease to all of the CV joints. Also, I would change the Transmission and Rear Differential Fluid and since you'd have to bleed the clutch system you might as well do a full brake fluid bleed while you're at it.

Does the 2.8 engine have a different crank between manual and automatic cars like the 1.8T? (Stupid stupid idea on their part, btw.)
