    Stage 1+ interesting run-in with a VR6

So I recently went from stock to GIAC FXKO3 with genesis injectors and the other night coming home late an older passat vr6 (not sure exactly which generation but it was the one that was before like the 99' passats) pulled up next to me at a stoplight close to the freeway on ramp. I wasn't really looking at him, so there wasn't necessarily an mutual understanding that he wanted to race. The light turned and he took off as fast as he could (which wasn't incredibly fast) and when I saw that he was trying to race I went WOT as well. Since he got the jump he was a couple cars ahead of me and we slowed to another stoplight before the on-ramp. I saw that he had at very least an exhaust, but I didn't think much else was modded. The light went green and we both went. To be honest, I thought I'd beat him for sure. He was trying to pass me on the left as if he easily expected to fly by (probably used to killing A4's) but he was just creeping by. His car was pretty close in speed to mine (now I know that our cars are by no means fast), but it was still faster enough (ha faster enough) that it really made me wonder what he'd done to it. Are there common cheap modifications that people do to those VR6's that make them decently quick or what? Oh and one thing to keep in mind is that I had the stock DV in so I'm not 100% sure I wasn't losing boost.

Well VR6s are much lighter than our cars plus they have less DT loss. Are you Frontrak or Quattro? If youre Quattro then he definitely has an advantage over you.

BTW, you should really upgrade your DV if you went with the big injector file. Pretty sure stock DV wont hold for much longer.

    Re: Stage 1+ interesting run-in with a VR6

vr6 in a passat? that would be one old passat. 180-190 to the wheels is easily achievable, you don't have that much. All motor gives him a very broad torque band like the 1.8T just less spike and more top end.

cams and exhaust and chip give him 6500rpm of joy, even a k04 make power that high.

you have alot of gearing options with the vr6 platform. esp final drive. some options include 3.94 final with a steep .717 5th gear giving mad off the line speed for drag racing (??) and nice cruising rpms.

    Re: Stage 1+ interesting run-in with a VR6

I had a '97 VR6 Passat that was lightly modded: Quaiffe, Schrick cams, lightweight retainers, chip, intake, exhaust, lowered suspension. It had a 7200 rpm rev limit and it pulled strong all the way there. It would hit 75 in 2nd and 95 in 3rd. It sure didn't run out of steam at the top like my FXK03. The FXK03 "feels" at lot faster than it is because of the strong torque spike, but it can't compare to the "long legs" of a VR6 in a fairly light car. I surprised a lot of people with that car. It was tons of fun!

hay old guy doesn't it suck to have a car with nice gearing and broad torque band and nice high revving top end then drive a 1.8T (small turbo?).

you probably understand why i like my 90 corrado. 150wft/lb@2000rpm peaking whp at 6200rpm. Can just lug a 1-3-5 shift lazily and still pull away from most hondahs trying to race me lol.

Yea…It’s definitely different! I miss the performance of the VR6. To bad Audi didn’t make that engine available in the A4. But overall the A4 is way more refined than the older Passats. I really like the Quattro system. With the Passat, even with a Quaiffe differential you always knew you were driving FWD. And believe it or not, the Passat interior peeled worse than my A4!

    Re: Stage 1+ interesting run-in with a VR6

I went from a modded 12v vr6 MKIV Jetta to my 04 b6 1.8t.. The VR is a great motor..It might seem to make low dyno numbers but because the powerband is so flat , it does not take much power to be really fast.. I know of a guy with a 205whp MK3 GTI, full interior that runs low 13's all day long, and has done a best run of 12.8..

A VR with a chip , intake, cams and exhaust can make power to 7000 easily...Even the older 12v motors are highly responsive..

    I do miss my vr6 :(

Mine had Autotech 262 cams, Autotech valve springs, titanium retainers, TT3.2 Downpipe, Techtonics High Flow CaT, Autotech 2.5inch catback, ABD CAI and Lan pipe, custom GIAC ecu flash to my specific mods, Flow balanced injectors by RC engineering ( balanced to <1% ) and a bunch of other stuff.. I could easily pull a chipped 1.8t in that car..

Thumbs up Re: Stage 1+ interesting run-in with a VR6

    Yeap me too -

Old Car: 00 Jetta IV VR6, 2.5 Techtonics Borla CB, and Cool-Flow ConeAF. Miss the sound (it popped and shrieked). But modding for HP gets $$$. The car was quick and fun though.

Current Car: B6-03tqm with Magnaflow, n TT DP, Giac Flash -

Speed: My old vr6 had very nice mid range but my B6 seems to launch alot better.

I think a GIAC 1+ could fend off a lightly modded VR6 especially from a standing start. Chances are the guy had more than an exhaust and filter, those mods are only good for 10-15 hp maybe.

Bought the DV the same time as getting chipped, I've just not had time to install it. Though my stock DV is definitely leaking now as it sounds like a BOV ha

ive got a 97' big valve head, Schrick cams, Schrick valve springs, Schrick intake mani, Intake, exaust, Clutch yadda yadda. my Gti feels so much more torquie then my k04 audi. But maybe because i dont feel bad beating the crap out of it.

just for your info a stock vr puts down about 150-160. i think im putting down about 180-190. prolly around 200awhp on the audi. i kinda wanna see which one is faster, but cant be in 2 cars at once and not letting my friends beat either.
