View Full Version : What can I do to improve the base from the Bose sub without replacing it

I used to be fine with the Bose system in my A7 as it was better than what I have had previously in a domestic system. Yeah it’s got its flaws but at the same time it still isn’t all that bad to me. Well when we got the 18 Wrangler with the Alpine system it showed me how weak the Bose sub is.
I don’t want to replace the sub but what can I do to improve the sound without spending a time of money? Would that accustic foam or however you spell t help? Is it just a matter of turning up the system gain for the base?

Do you have sub in the trunk? If so, add an 8" sub and amp. I used Kenwood sub and Alpine amp.
EDIT, just read you don't want to replace sub.. I can't help.

Yeah trunk sub but with 228,000 miles on the car I would like better base but it’s just not worth dropping a new sub and amp into it.

why not? it's a fairly easy job (at least on A6 where the battery is in the trunk and all the audio output lines are there too, so you don't need to route anything from the radio nor fight with the amp power connectors too hard).

there is a load of space next to the original amp behind the trim on the left, so my tiny 600W amp fits like a glove there...

Out the door for less than $500. This is all I used and I love it for how cheap it was.
If you want to spend more, JL has a slightly better powered sub.

This is to help convert the signal to eliminate the bass roll off of the Bose system.

Stuff the sub box with this https://www.amazon.com/Fairfield-PF16B-Poly-Fil-Premium-Polyester/dp/B006I04VLU/
I did it initially and it tightens up and deepens the bass a bit. If you don't want to change any electronics around, I'd recommend that. It tricks the speaker into thinking the subwoofer box is larger.

Later I replaced the amplifier and sub driver in the stock enclosure which both made it even better.

At that price I will give it a try. Is 1 bag enough?

I bought a used Rockford Fosgate P300-12 on ebay for ~$150. It has a high-level input so I spliced right into the stock bose subwoofer wires at the harness in the trunk. Another ~$30 for an 8ga OFC cable kit on amazon and that's it.
You will never be able to tune the 8" bose sub to sound good. There's a reason people call it a subwafer, it's small and has awful frequency response.

I recently put a 10” JL sub in my RS5 and used that Polyfill. One bag was plenty for a single sub box. Also, if you’ve got a Hobby Lobby close by they sell it there for about $3 a bag.

I may go that route after the speaker foam. Depends on what I can sneak past the family CFO.
Car is a 2012 and very high mileage but its paid for so we are at the stage of its life to spend just what we need to keep it on the road and not in the shop.

Stuffed the sub box yesterday and the improvement was marginal at best. I guess it’s time to start sourcing a better sub

let me say this...
it is worth it to drop a new sub and amp into it.
doing anything more than that will be a headache and probably cost more than its worth on the bose system.

I’ve seen posts and video on replacement in stock location. I believe there’s a pioneer sub that fits.
That said, an LCI with powered sub would be very easy and can be used in another car once you decide to replace the A7.
I used an audio control LCI/amp combo and also replaced the sub.
I tested the Bose sub with more power and it sounded better but not awesome.
