View Full Version : Engine Auto Stop/Start activating before full stop?

Hi everyone, I noticed while driving my 2016 Audi A7 TDI that the engine stop/start is activating before I come to a full stop, with my engine cutting off and the car coming to a stop abruptly. It's annoying and seems off, because my family's 2016 Q5 engine only cuts off after a full stop...

Seems like it's a problem I need to have checked out...right?

I’m pretty sure mine does the same. Just turn it off...

Yeah, turn that garbage off. More wear and tear on the starter with minimal savings. Especially on a TDI.

Mine only cuts off if the brake is firmly depressed all the way. I can come to a full stop and still not have the brake pedal aggressively held with the engine running. If I depress more the engine will stop. Note, this takes some skill to find the sweet spot and if I drive "normally" it will cut out every time. So to me, it looks like brake switch related or mine would see the brakes are on and the car not moving and cut the engine. Also, is this a PITA when parking or it doesn't really trip then?

Thanks everyone. Definitely will be turning it off then. But I'll also go check with my dealership just in case something bigger is lurking.

It doesn't trip when parking - only when I'm rolling up to a red light or stop sign (literally will stop a few feet away from where I'm supposed to stop and that's hella annoying...lol!)

My 2016 does the same thing. Drives me nuts and I find its getting worse. Turning it off with vagcom this weekend.

I made an appointment with the dealer next week so I'll see if they diagnose anything.

I was just complaining to my wife about this. It literally just cuts out and you stop abruptly. Or sometimes it doesn’t engage at all when traveling at really slow speeds, which I don’t mind.

The facelift models are supposed to have the 2nd gen version of the ZF8, although it's damn near impossible to find documentation on it specifically from Audi. Due to the new coasting clutch, the start/stop system can engage before the vehicle stops. Note that activation still requires certain conditions to be true, as well as things like the amount of brake pedal pressure applied.

Why would you shut it off with vagcom? Just turn it off with the dash button.

Because it turns back on when you restart the car. The only other way it will stay off is if you drive in manual or sport all the time.

My car only shuts off if the brake pedal is pressed firmly and the car is stopped.

That being said, ik the newer Audis, my dads 2018 S4 for example, shut off prematurely (like once your below 5 miles an hour).

I actually use the stop start in my car, because I feel like I'm in control of when it engages since the brake must be depressed so far for it to activate. However, when I drive my dads car I always turn it off.

If your car is a 2016 C7.5, perhaps they updated the software for the stop start.

Disable/memorize/invert Start & Stop:

- module 09-Cent. Elec.
- enter Security Code (20113)
- Adaptation on Channel 34:
subtract 4 to the value --> Start&Stop always disabled
add 32 to the value --> memorize last status (the Start & Stop status at engine startup will be the one at last engine shutdown)
- test & save
In addition of these values, if you add 64 to the value, the Start & Stop button light will be reversed: off if Start & Stop is disabled, and on if Start & Stop is enabled

Add 32 FTW

Got a 2014 Audi A7 TDI. Mine stops when I'm at a complete stop and when my brake is at a certain point. I can turn it back on when I see a yellow light by lightly letting off a little at the same point I stop at.

Maybe you've got moisture/air in your brake fluid and allows you to press the brake further than usual?

I attempted to permanently disabled this on my 17 A3 with vacgom and borrowed a cable. It disabled it but came back. I bought the Carista OBDII adapter. It was 30 bucks and a free trial. They have two different modes or methods for disabling it. The second method permanently disabled it for me.

And how do I do that without a Vagcom?

And how do I do that without a Vagcom?

Carista or OBDeleven adapter can do it also. I see you're in Toronto, you can borrow my Carista adapter if you like but you will need to buy a 1-week subscription for $15 CAD to enable the customization features since it's a subscription pricing model

And how do I do that without a Vagcom?

IN order of price and functionality .... carista-->obdeleven--> VCDS

All three of them can modify the start/stop.

Cheapest to most expensive. Also least to most functionality.. Depending on what you will do or want to do, should affect your choice... and of course your budget
