Hey, guys,
Just want to post some information here. I just had Apple CarPlay activated on my 2016 RS7. The whole process takes about two hours. No disassemble needed. Only need a USB to Ethernet port adapter (not sure if this one is custom made, I got from the guy who activate the carplay, by looking at it, should be standard), a Ethernet cable, a SD card, and finally a laptop with SD card slot.
The main work was done by the guy remotely, I only need to press some buttons at some points. The guy speaks enough English which is able to complete the process.
Update:
I'm glad this post helped a lot of guys here to activate Carplays on their cars.
I'm updating this post for people don't want to go through the whole post:
Tools:
1. D-link E100 USB2.0 to Ethernet
2. SD card - 8 to 32GB
3. Ethernet cable
4. Windows operating system, I used Windows 10. Some reported that they can use Mac running windows.
Contact: Telegram App and added the guy by name which is @Carplay_audi
Cost: It varies, depends on currency exchange rate, usually around $150, after finishing the work, he will send you his paypal address, you send him the money.
Basic steps from whatsamattau447:
1. download file from Mega, the guy will send you the link, then put files into SD Card
2. Use Teamviewer and connect w/him
3. He puts some files to SD CARD to PC
4. SD Card to MMI (Network cable to USB in Car)
5. MMI Reboot
6. Back + Bottom Left (GREEN MENU)
7. Ok --> Scroll Down --> RCC FOLDER --> SWDL --> User Defined SWDL check box RADIO Button
8. Back + Top Left (RED MENU)
9. UPDATE bottom Right
10. USER DEFINED
11. Bose Folder --> All (in upper Right Change to NONE) // If you have B&O system, he will exclude the B&O fill update to prevent loosing audio
12. He looked at RCC Folder (might be for cars with certain options.. i didn't do any changes)
13. START--> Continue--> Start
14. He checks to see if the update applied to all selections..
15. Resume --> Cancel Version Compare
16. Checks to see if Radio/Audi Nav Work.
17 SD Card to PC --> He moves some files
18 SD Card to MMI --> Reboots
19 Plug in Phone Works? = Done
WARNING:
This software update will always leave some error codes because the software with Carplay is never released for our cars, we are basically using software from cars with Carplay. Those error code CANNOT be erased. So, if you are afraid of leaving error code, then don't do the update.
New Update:
There is a recall about MMI software security, when you visit the dealer for service, they might want to install the security patch.
1. If you have carplay installed, dealer is not able to install the security patch to your car. If you want to have the patch done, you could either go back to the carplay guy to let him help you to flash back to your original version of MMI, then go back to the dealer for patch update. Or the dealer might to order you a new MMI according to some forum members.
2. Once you have the security patch installed, you can go back to the carplay guy to activate carplay on your car.

Do you know what changes were made? Firmware updates, coding etc?
Would you happen to know what version of the MIB II unit you have (NVIDIA or Qualcomm)? What is the build month/year of your RS7?

What month build is your Rs7? after around May it was available as an option. I believe that is when they changed to the mib2 hardware. So yes if you didn’t pay for the option you can even pay Audi to now activate apple carplay, but prior to that I’m not sure it’s possible. Although I have seen a place in Sweden that says they can do it.

My car was built November, 2015
For US car, on 2017, it started to have Apple Carplay option. Before that, we don't get that option even though it was built in, just have to be activated.

To clarify, when you say "before that", you mean just 2016 model year with the refresh (C7.5) right?

You got to be kidding! I would have much rather preferred the factory activation then the aftermarket kit I got, although the mirroring is pretty nice. Everyone I asked at Audi said it wasn't possible and the factory activation option I found said it didn't work for 2016. :( Is that a clock in red above your reception? Why is it displayed like that?
What is you MMI software version now?

Oh, that is because I have the music app running. Not sure if you ever noticed on your phone, when you running some app, when return to the main manual, the app keeps running, the clock on your phone screen will have blue color around it

That's odd because I always have music playing and never noticed that. I wonder if the phone matters, I have an old iphone 6. Just verified when I play music, it does turn my whole upper tab blue on my phone but doesn’t change the clock on CarPlay screen. What app are you playing music on? Do you have the guys contact info?

I know, but the comment made it sound like this is possible to activate on any model year before 2017. To clarify, you can only do this on 2016 model year, not 2013-2015 pre facelift, correct?

Good point. I actually chatted with the guy about it. It is not simple. He told me the spent quite bit to buy softwares which are used to "crack" in, activate stuff. I definitely will not spend that much just for the Carplay myself.

If you can come by, I definitely can help you with it. Just probably not worth the trip all the way to Michigan for it (driving, gas, hotel, etc). Probably for the same cost, you could get the the aftermarket setup which will give you the extra mirroring function.
Or, if you can find someone who can read and speak Mandarin, then you should be good to go.

Please keep us updated. I am jelly af with my wife's B9 that offer so many options in their MMI. I too have an 2016 A7 and would love to have this unlocked. I went to Audi Honolulu and tried to convince them to unlock it. The service manager told me "If you really want this feature, you might as well buy the RS5 Sport Back in our showroom." So they will hold out on you for more services.

I doubt Audi dealer will do it. I went there couple times, said no software update for my car.
Before I went this route, I was waiting for the NJ guy's hardware.
Then I found this, so no need for extra hardware installation.

I don’t think a group build would work. This is one guy in China and we are 12 hour apart (based on EST). It would have to be passed along as I am doing and each person contact him for the firmware upgrade and CarPlay activation.

P.C. -> Ethernet cord-> D Link -> USB inside armrest.
You move the SD card back and forth between the PC and the SD1 slot in the radio.
He uses teamviewer 14 to remotely control your computer and download a few things and open files. I used a new computer that had no banking or other apps that I would be worried about.
I communicated by messaging from inside taobao. He knows enough English that we were able to get it done. I sent a lot of pics using the taobao messaging system. He sent a lot of pics showing me what buttons to push and how long to push them. It was actually easier than I feared that it might be. Keep in mind that I’m 54 and not very computer savvy.
I did however have a student from China get me registered in taobao and she put the product into my shopping cart so that I could just go back and click the shopping cart. Then I clicked on the product inside the shopping cart and then clicked on the second figure on the bottom left which takes you to the messaging app. You can also use telegraph if you know how to do that.
As far as paying him goes, he sent me a PayPal request in USD. I got lucky and exchange rates are favorable so it was $148.
I’ll figure out postage for dee... I didn’t want to sell you something that would not work - I’m glad that it will work.

guy in China sent me a Mega file that I downloaded onto SD card. Used teamviewer for him to control my computer remotely. Used taobao app to message him and he sent me pics showing what buttons to push. I sent him pics of what was showing on my MMI screen.
You have to move SD card back and forth between PC and SD1 slot on radio. Also have to plug in Dlink to the usb under armrest in center console. (USB for phone is towards driver’s side (USA) and USB for PC is towards passenger side (USA)
Allen is right. The Mega file takes hours to download.
Next is just getting a d link and Ethernet cord for PC to d link
Next is firmware update - that takes a couple hours.
Then activate CarPlay. That was quick for Allen but at least an hour for me because I had some illegal values and I had to plug in SD card back and forth and also plug and unplug Dlink.
When it is working he sends you a PayPal request for USD.

Just texted the guy on Telegram, he was pretty responsive, told me to buy the D-link and that it would cost around $ 178.00, I'd do it if I could get Android Auto as well, but looks like this is not an option, I'm not changing my phone to an iPhone.

I'm not sure about that, I think it's an asian version of the software that supports carplay and baidu carlife, which looks a lot like android auto but I don't think can be used in the US.

From what I can see - the gizmo referred to as "D-Link" in the thread looks like a USB to Ethernet NIC? For real - that's intense. Do any of you have a model number?
Sounds like my shopping list is -
TBD D-Link product - from one of the taobao images it looks like they used an older rev of the DUB-E100, USB2 to 10/100. See here (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/403655-REG/D_Link_DUB_E100_DUB_E100_USB_2_0_10_100Mb.html) for example.
SD card - 32GB sufficient?
If somebody can get the "mega file" to me I can host it, to try and save time. I can imagine trying to get these files from China would be pretty tough.
I'm curious too - for those that got CarPlay activated - what does your firmware version say now?

The only thing I suggest is getting a brand name sd card.. the longest pet was flashing the mmi with the new firmware.. I had a 90Mb read/write (I don’t know how fast the sd card reader in mmi is) but that took 23 min from start to finish.
The firmware is 1.6 gig in size he hosts on mega and it took me 2 min to download..
If need be I can send the file to someone but he adds some special sauce to it to get it working..

I can give you basic steps...
1. download file from Mega
2. Use Teamviewer and connect w/him
3. He puts some files to SD CARD to PC
4. SD Card to MMI (Network cable to USB in Car)
5. MMI Reboot
6. Back + Bottom Left (GREEN MENU)
7. Ok --> Scroll Down --> RCC FOLDER --> SWDL --> User Defined SWDL check box RADIO Button
8. Back + Top Left (RED MENU)
9. UPDATE bottom Right
10. USER DEFINED
11. Bose Folder --> All (in upper Right Change to NONE)
12. He looked at RCC Folder (might be for cars with certain options.. i didn't do any changes)
13. START--> Continue--> Start
14. He checks to see if the update applied to all selections..
15. Resume --> Cancel Version Compare
16. Checks to see if Radio/Audi Nav Work.
17 SD Card to PC --> He moves some files
18 SD Card to MMI --> Reboots
19 Plug in Phone Works? = Done (mine required redoing steps 17 & 18)

He uploads a file to Mega. You download it onto your computer and save it on a SD card. You also buy a d-link to connect from your computer to a usb in the rs7.
It is easy. Just a bit time consuming.

you guys are absolutely insane letting a person from a foreign country connect to your computer with teamviewer and update a sd card that writes firmware to a component of your car. No Risk = No Reward...
He pulls the unique code from the Car to start firmware upgrade... Then he flashes Europe/UK firmware that allows CarPlay as an upgrade purchase. He then pulls a code in a keygen to unlock the CarPlay W/O having to purchase it.
Can he really screw up your car? Sure..
But I’d be more worried about the inline boxes from China that can do CarPlay as well.
Seeing how AOA doesn’t give us the purchase option of CarPlay and how Audi connect promised OTA updates (only for 2.5 years then you got to see your dealer)
On top of that google earth overlay is going away in 2020 I’ll let a guy from China work his magic

To me it has no risk at all. Probably you are not familiar with the website. Taobao is owned by Alibaba Group. Usually, most stores like this on Taobao will have physical shop. No issues here. I consider myself especially paranoid in this regard. I used an old laptop that I built out especially for this purpose, put it in a locked down VLAN routed out through a VPN, and then wiped the drive once finished. All of this is extreme overkill and completely unnecessary, but no matter what I would not leave the PC unattended while someone is connected to it.
As for the MMI, sure some sort of malware/ransomware could be inserted, but that would be quite a lot of work, AND it would cause a revenue stream to dry up for this guy once he's found out. I just don't think it's to his advantage to do anything bad.

Contact was very easy. I downloaded Telegram and added him by name which is @Carplay_audi. He sends you the mega file which is about 1.61GB compressed where you have to decompress it to about 3.60GB. You communicate with him using Telegram. He asks you to take pictures of each step to ensure that everything is going accordingly. One thing you have to have is the D-link E100 USB2.0 to Ethernet. That’s the only one that you can communicate with when plugged into Audi’s USB under the armrest otherwise it will not work. After install was done and everything’s working, he sends you his PayPal address and you pay him $155US.

Thanks for this. Quick question: Is this the only file the seller has you load? I ask because this is just a firmware (MHI2_US_AU57x_K3324_1 to be specific). I haven't yet obtained a fresh copy of this firmware to run a diff against to look for changes, but I doubt they're loading a modified firmware (if they are, that could possibly be problematic should you ever need to update firmware in the future).

I think it’s a firmware from the 2017 models. I had the vehicle serviced prior to doing this and I asked him if there is an MMI firmware update and they said no. There’s never one unless you’re having problems where they reload the one your vehicle comes with. But again some of these service advisors are not that knowledgeable when it comes to firmware updates. One service advisor at a very big dealership in Vancouver didn’t even know that Audi smartphone was available for the 2017-18 Models A7/S7/RS7.
After i performed the update for the smartphone it didn’t give me the newer maps. This is strictly a newer firmware Audi released in order to connect your smartphone. After he updates the firmware, he then activates the smartphone icon. It’s greyed out in the setting.

2x cars done tonight, success. All straight forward, B&O audio config is a little different from the instructions above in that he didn't mess with that part of the firmware. 2nd car done is not using the Bose amp and it doesn't show up in the red menu, he worked around it.
Both cars were done in a parking structure so a little freaky for the car to think it was in Los Angeles in the OEM NAV menus, it does resync once it gets outside.

widebodyfx, thanks for the assist on this! Carplay is working flawlessly on my car now, and I have to admit, using the MMI dial rather than a touch screen is much more intuitive than I anticipated! I'm pretty excited about not having to add any additional hardware to achieve this either!
Of course, it begs the question as to why Audi didn't offer Carplay/Android Auto in NA MY2016 cars to begin with, and don't offer a software/firmware upgrade now for those cars, since this is all it takes.

Thanks for dinner man! Glad you made the drive up, the carplay aftermarket boxes provide a similar experience but the button sequence to start it up every time was a little annoying on short stops, parking system/camera was another little annoyance in being that you couldn't call up cameras at will from the P button and the DIS not really giving you any info on media was the other thing having the MMI do it natively resolved.
Should've come from Audi USA like this considering the hardware is there. Booo on Audi, Yeah on enthusiast community.

Got mine done today, same experience as the others, the guy was pretty professional all the time, took about 60~70 minutes total. He excludes the B&O amp of the updates otherwise component protection kicks in and we lose audio.
Using Android Auto most of the time, I realized that Android Auto is pretty sensitive to the cable I'm using, it was freezing on me first.
Compared to the carplay box I have from RSnav and the resolution on Android Auto looks a lot better in the Audi smartphone interface, couple of images to show:

If your MIB were to be replaced for some reason Audi USA would not put the same firmware or Audi Smart Phone authorization back on. I had a MIB replaced for a bad SIM slot after buying the car and it wiped out all the addresses I had saved, I don't think the MIB is a common failure.

Just like widebodyfx mentioned, only if MIB need to be replaced, then you will need to do the update again. Otherwise, no risk of being rolled back during service at all. I took my car to Audi for service after getting carplay activated. Everything was good after service

In 2016, they changed up the headlights and tail-lights to a newer look so they call that facelift. Made it look better. They also changed the MMI to MIB2 but didn’t add CarPlay. It was added to the 2017 models. If you have the USB port under the arm rest which I’m sure you do then he can do this for you. If you’re vehicle production date is after May 2016 then you also go to the dealer and have them activate it for you. If not the guy on Telegram will do it for you. Hope that answered your question.

I had a battery charger on mine during the install but ended up starting the car eventually as my MMI didn’t want to restart in AC mode. It restarts several times during the process.
I never spoke to the person, only text and photos and it went well. No real issues, just do not jump ahead and do something stupid, also follow instructions and clarify if you are unsure. Sending pics back and forth worked great too.

Great to see you guy getting this done. Yes, $155 seems a small price to pay, but it would have been even nicer if Audi had offered to do it. Seems Audi is cutting costs at every corner, but I think it will end up costing them in the long run with customer loyalty. Next is the ending of the goggle maps overlay, even on cars like mine, that will still be under warranty when it happens. I've been driving Audi now since 2007 and I love their cars, but even I'm beginning to think that I might be better of with a different brand next time around. Hopefully things change in the next few years...

Also, don't know if this affects Carplay users but I noticed using Google maps vs Waze that there's a huge difference in resolution (Maps way better). Found out on my Metro commute this morning that there's a way to go into Developer mode in AA that will allow you to bump up the resolution to 720p. Anything over that will not be noticeable.

—d link usb to Ethernet adapter (usb 2.0)
—Ethernet cable. Just need a short one. Like 2 or 3 feet
—download app called telegram from App Store—his contact info is carplay_audi
He’s about 12 hours ahead of Boston/eastern time
—contact him and he can guide you through the whole process
—-you’ll need a mega file that he’ll send you the link to and also to install teamviewer onto your pc (he remotes log in a does everything)
Takes about 30 mins once all files are downloaded and whatnot.
I can’t recommend this enough. I just bought my car recently and didn’t want to get a 2017 or 2018 which are essentially the same but with CarPlay.

Did you notice that resolution could be improved and that sound settings are not available?
Or is it happening only in my case?
It's still looks much better than their wired media interface, which was pretty useless for someone with bluetooth phone.
Actually, annoying as when you connected with wire to charge your phone it would switch from bluetooth to that wired Audi media thing, but when you disconnected wire it would not automatically go back to BT, you would need to enable BT manually.

The settings for tone and stuff are not available for me either, saw that a few weeks ago. iPhone's somewhat have their own EQ at least for their music app, not sure how Android is these days.

Can anyone answer from the steering wheel, or just via MMI knob?
Siri/Google work via the wheel but not answering calls

Just got mine done yesterday around 9PM Eastern time. Process takes about an hour.
A little bit scary when you see your computer getting taken controlled of and when seeing the MMI system rebooting and updating files but it all worked out.
Another thing is that I used a restricted account on my family laptop and it always needed admin permissions(Password) for him to change some firewall settings. It also looks like he connects to his own VPN so I'm sure the activation process is happening there(Thats's the only point the Dlink Ethernet USB is used). Also just remember to revert back to whatever previous setting that he has changed.
Many steps has to be done by yourself on the MMI Screen but just to make sure keep sending pictures of each step that you are doing to him. Easier that way to communicate as English is not his first language.
Mine was a Canadian spec 2016 Audi A7 with the factory 2015 firmware and it updated no problem. Maps did not get updated.
Cost was $155USD
In the end I'm glad I did it. I recently bought my 2016 TDI and part of the reason I bought it over a 2014/2015 was that I stumbled upon this thread when researching about this model. The 2016 A6/A7 TDI's are basically the only diesel VAG cars that you can buy in North America that can also get stock Apple CarPlay/AA (by using this method).
Thanks again everyone for the info.

I want to have this done, but I don't have a PC, only macs. We're a pure Apple household. I think I'm going to buy a laptop just so I can do this. Can anyone tell me if the laptop needs to have particular specs? I realize it needs an SD card slot, and should be running Windows, but what else, such as minimum RAM? and does it need a data connection, or bluetooth? Minimum hard drive size? thanks..

I used VMware Fusion and created a Windows VM on my MacBook Pro(2015 model), worked fine. If you want to buy a PC just get the cheapest Windows 10 machine that has an SD card slot and an Ethernet port, it doesn’t need to be a high powered machine for this.

You shouldn’t need a PC. The seller is just connecting via a remote sharing device, most of which are cross platform. If your Mac doesn’t have an SDcard slot, just get a USB SDcard adapter. If for whatever unfathomable reason the seller insists on Windows since that’s all they’re familiar with, then you can just install VirtualBox/VMware/Parallels. Either way, there’s absolutely no need to buy a PC just for this.

Are you sure? That's great news if so. I have a MacBook that has a USB-C port and a SD card adapter that plugs into it. Not sure if that would work, but it's worth a try, especially since he only charges if the update is successful. So, when I'm sitting in my car and he's logging into my MMI, I obviously need to be within range of my wifi correct? Thanks..

Yeh, but a poster just above you said he did it successfully with a mac, just downloaded VM Ware Fusion. A friend of mine is telling me to use Virtual Box. I'm still confused about whether these options will work, and if so, if they will cost almost as much as a basic used or returb PC. If the latter is true, I may just spend a little more and buy the PC..

Well yea, with a virtual machine it turns your Mac into windows by running it as an app.

Ah, okay, sounds good. I see Parallels offers a quick way to install Windows as well, for no cost.. I may just be tech savy enough. Once I'm done, can I delete those applications without them leaving remaining pesky unnecessary files on my mac?

From my experience doing this the hardware you need:
-A windows based PC(can use VM ware or whatever emulation on the Mac to run windows)
-PC needs an internet connection and needs an Ethernet port(could try using an adapter but adapter-adapter may add complications)
-D-Link e100 USB Ethernet adapter(I assume because Audi has created their mmi system to understand this adapter only- others may work but why take the chance)
8GB SD card or larger. Also need a USB to sd card reader if your laptop doesn’t have one built in
Steps on software has been mentioned already along with him sending instructions on the process for you to follow.

Here is a dumb question... for those that are still under warranty, what would doing this do? I mean, its the MMI that is being upgraded, but any potential issues that someone may see that would point back at this hack?

An update for people without a Ethernet port. You can run this adapter with the d-link adapter and it worked fine. It just viewed the usb ugreen adapter as a Ethernet port.
So it goes PC-UGreen adapter-Ethernet ford-dlink-Car USB slot

You mean the resolution for the CarPlay screens aren't as good as if it came stock in a 2017 or 2018? That means video you're able to access via CarPlay won't be as good as well..

I used my MacBook Pro that only has usbc ports. Had a buddy install boot camp and then I had to buy an adapter to go from usbc to Ethernet and then the Ethernet to usb which is that dlink part. I have tons of sd cards so he logged into my computer with teamviewer and sent himself that file and extracted it onto the sd card. Once in the car he updates the system using the cables youve adapted to plug into the USB port in the console and then you plug the sd card in under the radio. Pretty simple looking back on it. Still the best and least money I’ve spent on the car

how much did he charged you in total ? do we have to download this mega file in advance? did you notice any problems in general in MMI after the activation?
lastly when you are in car play or android auto navigation mode, are you able to see the maps in instrument cluster screen? same as normal Audi navigation?
i would really appreciate if you could answer.

$155, yes download in advance, I’ve had no issues with the MMI since CarPlay was enabled.
CarPlay/AA maps do not display maps on the instrument cluster, the only map you can get there is from Audi navigation,

$155, he logged on and sent that file to my computer. It is sent via Mega that's why he calls it that I think. It isn't that big really. Just like normal CarPlay once you're using the phone for navigation you lose it from the car. If you're not using the phone nav you can see the car nav there.

What about resolutions when you are not using carply or android auto? are they also bad (with default MMI system)?
