Well I bought that and brakes when I thought I'd be dailying it, like a dumbass I bought racelands but will be replacing that with bc racing probably. And the brakes I got the b5 s4 rears and I'll be running apikol adapters to run b6b7 300mm rotors. With 17z's up front. Planning on doing an 034 rear sway kit.

Hope your "self control" leads to more goodies.

I'm sure it will lol I'll be ordering the brakes in the next few weeks, but it'll take 4-6 to get them built and to my door.

Had a little time to work on the rear carriers got them all primed almost ready for their first coat of imola.

While I was at it I blasted the rusty harmonic balancer to try and clean things up a little. I must say, having access to a media blaster is a privilege.

Was able to shave down all the un-necessary crap off the valve cover as well

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170206/989b39fb394cbb5c974536d7cc5d1f5b.jpg

Cleaned off the dirty intake manifold and replaced all the injector seats. Since they were all brittle and cracked. (What a pain in the ass)

Thanks man, I m really hoping to make some good progress with the engine when taxes come in. hate seeing it bagged up in the garage. bought a crank off a fellow az member Saturday so I just need to buy my rods, arp main studs, and rod bearings and I can start assembling.

When I bought the car the pads didn't exist, and the rotors were chewed up. so I did pads, and rotors all around. I opted for the full control arm kit from fcp along with coilovers, it was a new car....although very bouncy. cannot wait to do my 034 sway bar, and new coilovers. scored two brand new 225/40/18 Michelin pilot super sports for free so when I get my oz's im hoping the car will handle well.

I'm jealous. I'm talking to another AZer now to get some sport springs because the avant I bought doesn't even have the correct springs. Did you get rid of yours? I would be happy to get them if you don't need them.

Yeah just clips on. Has two rivets that I had to drill out to get off the donor bumper it came on. The rest is just clips. And yeah it's just smoothed and painted instead of textured.

Those rear calipers and carriers looked pretty scary, when I replaced mine I just bought new calipers (got a deal for $100) and only cleaned up and reused the carriers.
What did you prime them with for paining? My paint didn't stick evenly so if I ever do it again I would like to know the trick.

I ended getting the rear calipers for fairly cheap off a friend so I decided I'd rebuild them just to gain the knowledge. I was really unsure how they'd come out but they seem to be coming along. I used a self etching primer but I sand blasted them first anyway. It was duplicolor. But I'm sure any self etching primer would do.

Decided to order the rebuild kit today for the rear calipers off partsgeek went with the "CENTRIC 143.33016" kit that I saw on another thread. hopefully have the calipers apart this weekend. While they're apart I'll prep, and paint them.

Had some free time after helping my father bolt up his ghia to the rotisserie, so we cut the subframe bushings out of the s4 subframe, so I could replace them with solid 034 ones.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170218/5cf3ee77e0b380a4ea8713f79f9ecf28.jpg

With the help of a fein it only took about 20 minutes. With the time we saved (thinking it'd take about an hour or more) I had enough time to pull the pistons out of the rear s4 calipers I got

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170218/0ded8d7c5bbfedbbd8e9a4d4d357239a.jpg

I wish I could've gotten farther on them, but I couldn't seem to get the brake hoses off. So I'm soaking them to free them up. Just last year I put mkv r32 calipers on my mkv gti, and stripped out both rear bleeders, and snapped off one of the fronts, so I'm a bit weary, I'd rather take my time...plus I had better plans

Small update:

So after two days of pb blaster on the brake lines I was able to pull them out. Previous owner tightened the hell out of one and actually stretched/bent the male end

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170221/ec7db26142e4c0517b0ecc5917f69831.jpg

And I got the bleeders out without breaking any off (weary because of my last go at rebuilding brakes)

Correct me if I'm wrong...2000 (facelift) ATW, Swapping an AEB (with a drive by wire s4 throttle body), running an AWM ecu. Keep the ATW harness, run a wideband harness adapter, with a wideband o2 sensor. I wont have to swap cluster, or pedals. So I can run Eurodyne. Good thing is I have the ATW harness, and I bought an AWM harness and ecu over the summer.

Any tuning gurus want to chime in?

Safe to say they needed to be rebuilt.
Bringing the crank to my uncles shop right now to clean and mic it. If everything checks out I'll send it to a local shop to get it knife edged and balanced with the pistons and rods. Rods will be ordered within the next month.

After micing the crank found out that the mains are under by .001 and the rods are under .0015 so I'll probably have to run oversized bearings. I'll have to look more into it. If anyone wants to chime in.

Just find it hard to accept all tolerances to be off. I do not accept coincidences or accidents...and this situation is beyond both with all clearances off the way they are. Plasti gauge to confirm. Won't be the first time Audi goofed. Willing to bet it passes the plasti gauge test.

thedanplasse
03-13-2017, 08:31 PM
I definitely will...just to be sure but after getting this info and taking actual measurements of my crank...but who knows how precise these cranks are to what they're supposed to be measured at. I'll plastigauge it next weekend (since it's at my father's house an hour away) and see what the clearances are on the mains. I'm still going to have it knife edged so it will be at a machine shop regardless. Thanks for the input.

rod brands dont really matter.
Most people who have bought eagle rods dont have issues.
Nothing wrong with scat.
I ran IE but thats just because i got a deal.
Any thoughts about going stroker? Id recommend it with that big holeset.

it isnt that much more work (just the boring and IM shaft machinig)...which idk if you have to do with the IE rods...i could be wrong.

great to see another Massachusetts build!

I'll probably buy the scat rods because I've seen good things about them, and they're only 400, but it's been slow at work so when it gets busy again I can justify buying them. Probably next month. Then I'll plastigauge all rod, and main bearing surfaces, just to make sure everything is ok.

Kind of just rolling with it, but i've been talking to some guys, and judging the power kind of off that....Hoping to get 450whp after the head build, and the meth. I know its hard to achieve, but again..I never expected to be this far into my build...Bought the car, and was just expecting to daily it. Then I had the idea to buy an Aeb, not split it open, and run a t3t4...440cc tune and just have a fun car, then this happened lol. So I'm willing to spend the time<and money to get to that goal. Keep in mind, this is my first engine build, so I'm doing this to expand my knowledge, learn and have some fun. I think thats why I'm going so far with it. Just to say I have, and familirize myself. Plus I've met a few guys who I'm glad I've met, and are super willing to help with any annoying questions i have.

Not to throw jabs at anyone but I have found "power mod" guys are a LOT more down to earth and helpful when you need it vs. the asthetic mod guys.

Yeah I've noticed that too, after being a part of the "stance scene" for almost a decade. Nobody wants to help, or share experiences like offset, and shit. But again you have a lot of idiots who don't want to do research, and want everything handed to them...so I guess it goes either way. But when I have questions, or concerns here it seems I have a handful of people who are happy to lend a hand...It's a nice change lol.

Do you have access to E85?? Amazing fuel. It's unreal its capabilities, if you do have it local to you, i'd suggest going that route. With the shitty pump 91 (highest pump octane available to me), I was only able to get about 5psi on my HX35 before it started knocking like a bitch. Switched to E85 and hit over 30psi that same day. Meth will certainly help, but the fuel accounts for a lot.

I'll probably end up tuning it on 93 and meth just out of convenience. Sounds like your timing was a little off for the ethanol content of running just 91.

Walked over to audi to grab the valve seal puller for the intake valves. We managed to pull the exhaust side using some angled pliers, but didnt even try on the tighter intake side. Should've just used that from the beginning.

I used long needle nose pliers to get mine out. I plan on picking up a cheap generic tool to place new ones on, though. Want them seated properly and not quite sure I have the skills to pull it off with pliers.

I posted in the bullsh*t thread the part number for the pullers..I'll find out the one for the installer, and post it later in there too. The guys at my Audi store are really helpful, they let me use theirs, and offered me the installer, but it needs to get ported and polished first. I pulled all the exhaust ones with pliers, but it was a huge pain in the ass. Took the 12 intake ones out in about 10 minutes with the right tool.

Cheap ebay rods. Eagle or RPM may be the most cost efficient. Most come from the same foundry with QC done by companies to ensure things like +/-1 gram weight differences when they arrive. Then they dress them up in fancy boxes and stamp a company logo on them. Some companies like to market them for more money than others because many like buying brand names. Added relevance to the matter, while I conjecture they spend the money for security reasons. But really, they are all the same sh*t. Added reasoning of my opinion in there, but the foundry info is credited to an old vendor (not going to name names, because some like him while others don't. me personally, I care less). Only real differences they do is rifle drilling, and that cost can be justified. But you have oil squirters, so not exactly a necessity.

I run Brute rods currently because I got a deal with pistons on them for price of rods brand new. If I plan to build next block on the side I def need another form of transportation (have a Maxima right now too, but I don't know what tomorrow nor the next 5 seconds holds for my life) to dismantle my current block, or will just pick up a deal for cheap ones if they pop up. Wanted to add the aforementioned is for H beam rods, and not sure about I beam because companies like Pauter have been around for a while before other companies started offering I beams. But I will just pick up cheap ebay rods, as they are the same sh*t (I don't trust all ebay, but Eagle can be sought there for cheap along with RPM). As for bearings Glyco all around does many justice, along with me. Trick is utilizing your internet shopping skills, which seems you already have the knack for.

Honestly, I'm just waiting for someone who bought IE or Scat rods, and decided they didn't want to use them. I picked up a set of JE Pistons for $350 shipped so if I can pick up some rods for around $300 I would be thrilled. Mind you, that's only $95 less than new scat rods. But $95 is $95. I want to use Mahle race bearings, but again, I want to wait for someone selling a new set that didn't use them. I can wait. I have a lot of disassembly/assembly to do.

Dropped the block, and all short block parts off at the shop to get bored, decked, allign honed, balanced, crank pinned, and assembled. The previous shop I brought it to didn't do anything correctly. I'll have to get the block bored out .002. What's funny is I already bought pistons off another AZ'er, which were stated to be stock bore. After measuring them at the shop, we found out they are over sized by .002 so it works perfect. Had the crank measured and, it's in spec, so stock size bearings will work.

Nothing big. Have to drop this off at the engine shop next week so they can balance everything. So I threw a couple coats of metallic black VHT engine enamel on. Will do clear tomorrow. Had to refinish it because it was rusty. Previous posts showed I blasted it down to bare metal, and primed it. Everything on the engine will be gloss metallic black except the wrinkle black valve cover, and intake manifold. Even those might be stripped and painted metallic gloss black.

After a couple months of procrastinating I finally got the solid bushings in. Gumby was right. That sucked. Thank God my uncle has a machine shop that I have access to. We had to grind down all the flaws in the bushing holes, and make sure there was a smooth surface before pressing them in so I didn't warp my subframe. The wonders of having the correct tools.

Benders big score, I believe, was the first hour long special after cancellation. Watched the series from beginning to end at least 10 times on netflix. Girlfriend just bought me the box set [:D] she has a matching Leela on her leg too.

Thats exactly what I'm going to do. I have VHT textured black shaved valve cover, and intake mani, but I will be stripping those back down, and doing them to match everything else. Theres a guy building a crossflow for his mk2 that i came across and it made up my mind to do everything gloss black.

Did you trim the bar already?

When I used a C5 A6 bar, I had to use the inner holes as my new outer ones. Redrilled new inners and then trimmed/cut the edges of bar to match the original chamfer.

Pretty simple. Using the c5 bar is way easier than using a b5 bar.

Making like a both show&go car. Decent car choice to dive in for it. Ways have been already paved to make the goofs minimal. It just isn't cheap to do it on this platform vs say...a Subaru.

thedanplasse

Trying to stay away from making it a show car, but I started painting things a certain color, and I'm sticking with it. I don't want it to be a complete show car, but I want it to look decent, and not just thrown together using junk parts. I'm so used to building things to look nice. that's why I chose to build this car differently...but I always find myself looking at parts, and wanting to do something different with them. The engine bay will have all metallic black parts in it. But I've chosen to have a stripped interior to go with the "go not show" aspect of the car.

Seerlah
09-08-2017, 05:40 AM

The interior was in disarray. Way too much money to repair all the scratched, cracked, faded, ripped, and stained components. I'm going to run an autopower roll bar, harnesses, and my brides (Until I can replace them with Recaro pole positions). I'll paint all the missed spots on the floor santorin blue to neaten it up a bit. Making custom aluminum door panels, so I dont have big holes in my doors. I want to make the car as light as I could too... Plus, I dont daily this car either. I'll be trading my gti for a b5 s4 soon, I'll keep that interior in, hah.

After I'm done with the really expensive, and time consuming part of this b5 build, I'll be switching focus to the bug, right now I'm helping my father with his '69 ghia. But we have to pull the 2100cc out of my moms '79 super beetle to put in the ghia, which will be replaced with a 1641cc for my mom since she "hates that race car motor".

I haven't taken my door skin off on the b5, If it's anything like the mkv it just unscrews off. When I took the door panels off, it looked like the window frame, and glass can be taken out with the motor as one whole assembly? I would imagine you could get it done fairly quickly, no way id pay a shop to do that for me...unless it needed body work (that's one thing I do not attempt to do) other than that, a couple hours time, and some beers should get it done.

Once I source a santorin blue passenger rear door skin, I'll be replacing that... so I could definitely let you know, afterwards.

Door skin as in the interior door card? Yeah, it's easy to remove on the B5. There are DIY's floating around. If you can build an engine you can do this. Basic overview is to pop out the plastic piece in the grab handle, remove a few screws hidden by it. Then there's two small screws on the top edge of the door. After that, slide the door card up. Remove wires and door pull cable.

Then the window frame and glass can be pulled as a single assembly after removing a few torx fasteners.

Again. Just another media blasting update. Took the intermediate shaft apart, and cleaned the pieces up, already painted them black. New seals, and o rings going back on. Then re installation begins. (Not pictured) I finally got around to removing all the stripped Allen bolts holding both pulleys on the power steering pump. Said pulleys have been blasted and painted as well. Pump will be next.

Coming along nicely. My block is still at the machine shop, just waiting on the call. What freeze plug did you get for the hole where the block breather went? Only thing I could find was a rubber expansion plug.

Only thing I could find was a rubber expansion plug.40mm from any auto parts store. I had one in there previously, but took it out, and threw it away to run the stock breather. Until I found the adapter for a catch can line...so I put one back in lol. I used some sealant around it before I tapped it in just for peace of mind. Don't want that falling in at 8500rpm.

I was in a hurry when I picked up the expanding one. Yea that would be pretty disastrous.

I think I paid like $3.50 for a new one at CAP, fits snug and looks neat.

Spent a little time last night finally working on the rear calipers I have been avoiding for the last 6 months. I couldn't get the inner snap ring back in, even after several attempts with different pliers. I ended up modifying a set of Gearwrench snap ring pliers to fit in there. Managed to get the ring in, but will have to wait until tomorrow to use the caliper piston depressors at work to get them all buttoned up.

Completely stripped the calipers down. Re-surfaced the Piston, and cylinder area. Blasted the bracket and calipers. Painted them imola yellow, and replaced all seals, and o-rings with a centric rebuild kit. Ordered new slide pins, boots and bolts as well. Should be better than the day they were built, when matched up with apikol brackets to run 300mm B6/B7 rear rotors.

Thanks, That was my plan. I wanted everything to be clean, Stripped down to bare metal, and painted metallic black. Any gaskets, and o-rings will be replaced. Same thing with the suspension, all bushings will be replaced with either high density poly, or aluminum. It won't be a daily driver so the cabin noise/vibration won't matter much to me. I want it to perform, and handle as best as it can.

Kinda late now, but I got a set of motorcycle master cylinder snap ring pliers that worked great for when I rebuilt B6 S4 rear calipers.

Calipers look great btw, I would be so paranoid about getting brake fluid on them lol

>_< I'm afraid of that too..Going to have to be very careful when I bleed them. But I also did my R32 calipers in brown to match the interior of my GTI when I did them, so I have a little experience. I'll post a picture of what I used to get the snap ring back in when I get back up to my parents house this saturday. Honestly even with the pliers it was hard to get the ring in until my dad came, and helped me with an extra set of hands.

Got the Piston in. Word of advise. Put the boot on the bottom of the Piston, and put the boot in the caliper. When depressing the Piston in it'll slide in to place. Just so you don't have to disassemble the caliper to take the Piston back out :banghead:

Rotorlab.com has killer deals on 17z's.
I'll be ordering from them eventually. I have the luxury of not needing to daily drive my car so I can have it apart for refinishing for as long as I need. I'm trying to make everything legit and clean as hell, so when I decide to race the car, it'll pass tech inspection quickly. Plus I have access to a shop I work at, a machine shop my uncle owns, and a spray booth (makeshift for spray cans) whenever I need it.

Plus...my family (Mom Dad, and Uncle) are all happy to help with my project. My Dad has been helping blast, and paint parts while I'm away at my house or work (car is at my parents house), my Uncle is obviously doing all the machining, and my Mom is reupholstering the inserts for my seats in a suede that matches my santorin paint. That, I can't be thankful enough for.

I'm just trying to take advantage of what I have right now. If I daily drove my car you could guarantee that I wouldn't have everything this clean. I'm glad I could be a bad influence to someone lol. We all need someone.

My interior was so beat after years, and years of daily duty, and dog hauling (plus it was tan) It would've cost way too much for me to swap a whole S4 interior in...I know you know...And since I'm trying to make this thing as light as possible without too much un-reasonable work, I decided to run a stripped interior with only the top half of the dash, and two race seats. That, I can't be thankful enough for.

I'm just trying to take advantage of what I have right now. If I daily drove my car you could guarantee that I wouldn't have everything this clean. I'm glad I could be a bad influence to someone lol. We all need someone.

just saw this reply...dang forgot to check back in on your build. anyways i just ordered zimmerman front rotors last month. wish i had seen your link to Rotorlab before. I like supporting good small owned companies.

anyways, still enjoy seeing you paint all this shit and making it look better than new. I'm not as embarrassed now to tell someone that i spent hours underneath a fox mustang i had cleaning and painting the whole underbody on that car. I didn't finish that car, because i'm an idiot and thought i should sell it get something else. Live and learn...

Water pump, accessory bracket, and power steering pump on. I forgot to paint the water pump pulley, so I blasted, and painted that today. Need to buy my arp crank bolt so I can actually bolt that up.

Pressed my new wheel bearings in the uprights, along with my hubs that got painted to prevent rust (hence the goofy paint).

Got the fan clutch on after blasting, and painting it. What a pain in the ass that little part was.

Got the splash guards on the uprights. I forgot I had them, and in great condition. Anxious to see if they'll clear the 17z setup.

Well I have to buy wheel bearings, wheel speed sensors, axels, brackets, calipers, pads, brake lines, rear shock mounts, and numerous bushings so don’t count yourself out lol

Yeah. I still have to buy rear strut mounts too...and the brakes. So we'll see. A dollar to who ever wins.

have you thought about ditching the clutch fan for an electric at all? I hate those things too and want to swap mine out. I'm at least thinking about a switch for the electric fan so i can turn on when its hot during the summer.

I have a friend who still runs his on his 600whp FD RX7. He's kind of been my guide through this engine build. So I'll keep it for now.

Depending on its performance, I may switch to an EFK...But if I don't need to, I'd like to stick with this.

Who knows...I may end up going that route, But for now I have enough on my plate. I don't want to replace (spend money on) things that will be just fine.

Thats how I see it (for now at least)

I have 17Z's with 330mm fully floating rotors without the upright convertion. Apikol has brackets for them with their rotors, or you can use Mercedes rotor with a little machining.

I know that wasnt for me. I ended up getting the S4 uprights because I went to an 01E anyway. I'll be running Apikol's rear B6/B7 S4 brake conversion on the avant, as well as their rear diff mount bushings.

X2 on the rear Apikol BBK. Was on the fence about it but found caliper at a price I can’t refuse. As far as the b6 uprights, it’s something I’ve always wanted to do, with the intentions of one day doing a BBK, but with the BBK I’m doing it’s kind of redundant, other than the weight savings and being a few cm lower and wider.

any particular reason you went with B6/B7 rears instead of B5 S4? Bigger rotor?

I'm runnig B5 S4 rear calipers I rebuilt, and refinished. I came across the kit to run B6B7 rotors which are 300x22 instead of the 256x22. So I figured for the money its a huge step up, especially from the 245x10 non vented A4 ones. Should work well with the 17Z's too.

*shrug*

Go big or go home, I guess.

cool build.

its been years since i did a 17z upgrade but i don't remember being able to fit the dust shields on mine.

Thank you!

If I need to modify the shields, or run without them I will. I'm running 345x30mm R32 brakes on my GTI, and I couldn't run the shields, so I'm not running anything, and I cant notice any downfall.

I took them out after I took the picture to rustle Devon's feathers, lol. I do still plan on running them as is for the same reason. I could easily refinish them, or even better buy new ones, but...I think this is a better option.

Dan what are you doing for rotors? I’m doing 345x30 front and the same rears as you. So a complete b6/b7 s4 kit. Adams rotors is a lot more than $300 F/R shipped to your door like their ads say once you actually price it out. I contacted rotorlab since their website doesn’t have prices but they never got back. Not really sure where to go after that. I’m sure any nice slotted and/or drilled rotors like your typical stoptech, willwood, Brembo, etc will cost a small fortune.

I haven't gotten quite that far yet. I was planning on walking next door to Mercedes because I get employee pricing there, but I'd like a thicker rotor than the 28mm ones youd get with OEM Mercedes ones. For the 17Z's I'll be running 330mm rotors, not 345mm rotors that the 18Z's run...BTW

When the time comes I'll do a bit of reading through the comprehensive brake upgrade thread you tried quoting earlier.

I'd like 2pc ones but I can't see spending that kind of money on just rotors.

The Volvo R rotors are the thicker 32mm ones IIRC, just need the mounting holes enlarged to accept the 5x112 pattern.

Let me take a stroll through the brake page now. It's been a while since I've lurked it. That's a great alternative Btw. Thank you.

17z 330mm BBK:
17z Caliper Rt Porsche 955 351 422 33/Touareg 7L6 615 124 H/Audi Q7 7L6 615 149
17z Caliper Lt Porsche 955 351 421 32/Touareg 7L6 615 123 T/Audi Q7 7L6 615 150
Mercedes Benz C230 330mm x 28mm rotors 203 421 13 12 *(machine center hub a few mm, drill lug bolt holes to 14mm, and need 2mm Apikol shim or steel washers)
or
Volvo V70R/S60R 306 452 22 330mm x 32mm *(open lug holes with a 3/4" bit, and minimal grinding to uprights)
Apikol 2-piece 330x32mm rotors
Apikol brackets
Requires new brake lines?Y
Confirmed fitment-Centric (Stoptech branded) 950.33005 brake lines

Hopefully the grinding will actually be minimal. We'll see what happens, but that's probably the route I'll take. I know Rotorlab says they machine the calipers to fit correctly over the rotor, so one side pistons arent over extended, so I'll be calling them again to confirm before ordering. I talked with him over the phone for about an hour when I originally called, and he's a super nice guy. Unfortunately all my money is tied up in my head for a while, so I wont be doing any brake upgrades for a little bit.

Ideally I’d just get direct bolt ons. Don’t care to be drilling, shaving, shimming and whatnot. I’ll give rotorlab another call once I’m serious about buying. If their rotor prices are anything like their caliper prices that’s a no brainer.

The volvo ones on FCPeuro are only $80 a piece....For that price I'll be going that route. The work needed to run them seems well worth it.

Thanks! I read up on the 17Z writeup in the B6 section for awhile and contemplated doing it, then realized it's not really worth it for a DD.

I think last time I had a whole RockAuto cart set up, with reman 17Z calipers, lines, pads and rotors for about $600. So then a little more for the hardware through McMaster Carr.
