View Full Version : Allroad manual transmission swap, manual to manual....

So i know there is a decent amount of info on what need to be done to convert a TIP allroad to manual.

However.

I have a stock manual allroad, and the trans just let go. (It's a 2003)

My question is can i swap any 01E into there? I know the allroad trans has different gear ratio's....
or should i just get it rebuilt?

If anyone has any knowledge on this any input would be appreciated!

You should be able to find an Allroad trans pretty easy, since almost everybody who swaps uses the A6 / S4 trans with taller gearing.
But ..I'm curious, you say the trans just "let go" ...the 01E is a VERY durable trans and can handle a huge amount of power really. Parts can fail, but under normal use I'm not sure I've heard of one that just 'let go'.
Either way, if you swapped one with taller gearing I think you only need to deal with the rear diff and front axle flanges to re-use your Allroad axles. Otherwise..straight swap. Just the trans.

The final drive ratio is 4.375:1 on the allroad, while the A6 and B5 S4 01E transmissions use a 4.11:1 ratio.
The allroad also has a transmission cooler which is not on the A6 or S4.
You can use the A6 or S4 trans if you also swap the rear differential from a manual A6 (S4 rear diff is completely different & will not work). If you do use a trans from anything other than an allroad, the cruise control will no longer function unless you flash the ECU with a manual A6 file (cruise control computer uses gear ratios) ...

I actually haven't gotten a chance to really look at it yet, I got it as is, upon deceleration in gear it makes a whining and grinding sound which is getting considerably worse over the course of less than a mile. I believe it to be a bearing having gone bad.

The car also has k04's.....(with what i assume is a stage 1 tune) and no supporting fueling mods.. [confused]

Having owned both a 6 speed allroad and a 6 speed a6 I will succinctly say this. Fuck allroad gearing.

Given your situation I would swap to an a6 trans/rear diff without question. Might need an a6 driveshaft too, not sure on that.

From my recollection the casing is the same, it's the internals and axle output flanges that are different. So if one was to swap an a6 trans in, you would need to swap axles flanges from allroad trans to a6 trans.

I am sure Scott will jump in here if need be but all you need is a new transmission from an a6 or whatever and then a 4.11 rear diff. Your drive shaft will be fine. If you use a drive shaft from an a6 the support bearing bracket arms will be too short because of the allroad having subframe spacers.

You mentioned flashing the ecu with an a6 file,

I know this is a whole other can of worms, but do any of you guys know if a APB ecu can be made to work in my allroad? (BEL)

I may be wrong, but I don't think a re flash is necessary. I think you just have to recode in vcds the engine to be s4/a6.

I don't know about bel vs apb ECUs but I would assume it would work if it was flashed with the appropriate apb file or vice versa.

APB is ME 7.1 hardware, BEL is ME 7.1.1 hardware, flash from APB won't work on BEL and vice versa.

Like everyone else (except for some offroad purists, but 99% never drives this car in such fashion) who installed 4.11:1 (A6/S4) 01E transmission in their allroads, I say "what was audi thinking putting such ridiculous geared transmission into a road car?!". There is a double whammy that comes with allroad 01E:

- final drive is 4.35:1
- all gears have higher ratio

Combine the two above and you have significantly shortened gears in comparison to normal cars, offset somewhat by larger wheels allroad has.

To swap 4:11 tranny into allroad:

- move allroad 01E front L/R output flanges to 4:11 01E transmission (very easy to do) or get A6 drive shafts. Swapping flanges is cheaper since you already have all the pieces in hand and don't need to buy any extra parts.
- obtain 4:11:1 rear differential and install it into your (EEU or FVN from A6 will work 100% bolt on without any changes needed)

Done and enjoy normal transmission. I can do 70mph in 2nd gear and 130mph in 3rd in my souped up allroad at 8.3k rpms [:)].

With the unfortunate recent loss of DAZ =[
does anyone know anyone else on here that dabbles in tuning?

so will the a6 trans lead to better fuel econ?

not that I noticed. It is still one of the heaviest audis with one of the least efficient engines and mediocre aerodynamics.

I have a special case where I have a "TDI" 01E with a taller 6th and able to get over 30mpg @ 55mph and ~20mph @ 80mph. However my average is 15mpg

Like Julex said, about the rear diff is correct. There are more than 2 rear diff codes that will work however. There are like 6 different 4.11 diff codes that will all work.

Julex: What did you do to you heads to rev to 8.3k?

Belly pan and trans bellty pan will also give you back about .5 MPG. Drag coeff. on ar / avant is .32 which is normal for most cars but not great. I loose much MPG over 65.

Help needed! I bought a manual conversion from an S4 for my ‘01 manual Allroad to get the better gearing. After ripping out the old trans I noticed that the S4 tranny doesn’t have two coolant lines that the Allroad does. Do I need these coolant lines for any reason or can I block them off and run without coolant?

Old transmission has the orange glove attached:

You can block them off at the radiator and remove the lines from the car. The lines are for the oil cooler.

That is the gearbox oil pump. You don't need those lines since the S4 trans doesn't have the pump. Be sure to block off the oil cooler in the rad.

Figured that’s what needs to be done. Just wanted to be sure.
Thanks for the replies.

Is the cooler for the allroad transmission meant for light “off-roading”? Wondering about longevity once the other transmission is installed?

HOWEVER, I'd say if you get the gear oil in the trans ABOVE 120°C without the cooler (I.e. racing) then its probably beneficial to have it

No plans on racing. Spirited driving here and there, maybe. Traffic is horrible around here. Any recommendations on gear oil?

Thanks!

Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkFuchs Titan Sintofluid has a good reputation. It's the OEM fluid without the giant markup. I'm running Redline MT-85 Performance GL4. It's absolutely awful in the cold, but it's fine when it's hot. Thinking of switching to a lighter oil for the Synchro's sake. Almost daily grinding of the 1-2 when cold is not doing me any favours

I'd go with Audi G070726A2 oil. This is a new formulation for old boxes - I am running this is my 01e for last 5 years or so with countless WOT runs @ 650WHP. Transmission is smooth as silk. You can get it for ~$10 a quart... actually cheaper than Fuchs bottle!

And yes, don't get Redline... the transmission is very very rough when oil is cold!

Not that it would hurt to block off the cooler lines at the rad it isn't really necessary. It is it's own cooler inside and you won't leak/lose coolant leaving them open. It is/was transfluid being circulated through a part of the radiator not coolant through the trans.

Msrp is like 13-14 bucks.. are you sure thanks not for a 4l version? Forget if this comes in one.

Everyone online has it for 10-12 bucks. Ecs shopdap Europa etc.

Shipping can hurt though and dealer can be cheaper for 1 bottle.

allroad gearing is the worst. By the time you let off the clutch in first it’s already time for 2nd. Around town it sucks. After a few years of a 01e whine due to a burnt up bearing (make sure the shop refills proper amount of tranny fluid!!) and then dealing with a “reputable” transmission rebuild guy on here; I’ve bought an 02x from the b6 6speed that’s going to go in the allroad this winter. Way less then a “rebuilt” 01e. Of course, it will require slight modifications

I'm doing a manual swap on my 2004 audi; using a 2003 manual transmission that has the cooler lines. However these lines are in poor shape. I'm looking to replace them. Anyone here know where i can get a set?
@daddyvgn- would you mind if i get your since you dont' use them ?

I used stage 3 ECU from APB on BEL, no issues.
