01E 6-Speed driver output flange play ...

Hi,


I am running a 01E 6speed from a Euro A6 TDI in my A4 B6 and have noticed that there is quite alot of play in the driver side output flange ,about 1/8'' radial play in all directions. There also seems to be an oil leak from the same flange.

I noticed a vibration and ``clunking`` noise when bracking at high speeds with the transmission in gear. I am wondering if the faulty part could be the actual output flange shaft or the bearing or both ...

Any help on the specific part numbers and/or procedure to fixing this issue would be greatly appreciated since I cant seem to find an exact answer online.

Check out Post #194 onwards. If there is movement it's most likely the output flange bearing and of course seal replacement while you're in there. INA bearing if you can find it.

Thanks for the reply! I am still wondering how the needle bearing controls radial play, but there may be something I'm not understanding here. I'll add this to the pile of research I've been doing.

From what I can tell, it's not the carrier bearings failing, as the sound I am experiencing is independent of load (meaning, this rattling occurs independant of acceleration or coast), and in my experience, when the carrier backlash opens up, the symptoms are different than the "rattling" sound this makes. Plus, with as much distance as my flanges are reciprocating in their bores, the gear set would have been toast thousands of miles ago.

Sorry to bump an old thread but did anyone ever find a resolve for this? In the thread linked above he replaced the bearing and seals inside the transmission. The 01E is different however and I am wondering if anyone has experienced the rattling/clunking associated with this and if so, did replacing the bearing and seals fix the issue? Can this be done with the trans still in the car on the 01E like he did on the S6? Thanks guys

There is no needle bearing where the flange rides inside the diff in an 01E. If you have radial play in the output flange, then either the flange is worn, the diff is worn or the diff bearings are worn. If the diff bearing are the culprit then the ring and pinion is likely damaged as well.
