View Full Version : Just added chipwerke box to stage 2 car....

I am new to this car so I am reading threads and trying to catch up on this chassis. My car is stage 2 custom tuned with smaller pulley. I decided to add the chipwerke box for extra performance and am curious if what I am seeing is correct? There is definitely a gain in performance, mostly noticeable in higher rpms from 5K-7K. Boost pressure seems the same or maybe a little less so I'm not sure whats going on there. When I ordered the box I asked them to configure it 3-1. If I decide I want to change that or check that its set there how do I do this? Thanks for any input/help. Car is only making 12psi-14psi btw, is this normal for a stage 2 pulley'd car making 415whp? Thanks
Is this safe? Wouldn't normal stage 2 tune already up the boost level?

Theres a couple guys running it with stage 2 now, Leo is one I believe.

Most likely the CW is keeping your bypass valve closed more than what your tune is suggesting. You can open the bottom of the chipwerke box by taking out those 2 screws.

Just remember that if you're logging your car using VCDS, your boost pressure figures will show less than what they actually are... overall your max boost will not change (14-15 PSI) but it will close the valve more than before which will help lower the amount of boost bypassed under partial acceleration and probably extinguish any bypass at WOT

You can pull the cover off the CW and change it.
Just make sure to log.
I have mine piggy backed on my stage 1 tune currently.
Use 2-1 on pump gas and 4-1 when I mix.

exactly .. some tuners tune conservative .. that means any first sight of something going wrong it opens the bypass valve and bleeds boost to be on the safe side.. the CW box is going to tell the ECU to ignore it.. everything's fine.. just keep on boosting.. so OP if you're in ideal conditions where the ECU doesn't need to dial it back.. you will likely see the same performance .. Loe is running the CW Box on top of his Stage 2 because he has dual pulley's .. so where the dual pulley is making more boost than the tune on Stage 2 is created for the CW box will say yes yes go for that boost where as the ECU will say Shut it down.. we don't need anymore

Okay that all makes sense except that I am not making more boost with the chipwerkes box, I am actually making a little less. I have a larger crank pulley that I will get on soon but still waiting on my VCDS cable to come so I can see where its at before I add more.

I'm not sure you're 'actually' making less, as much as CW may be telling the system you're making less to keep the bypass valve closed. I'd be concerned that it may be eliminating your safety net though.
I'm sure you're getting some performance out of it...just don't know at what cost.
There were folks doing this in the BMW world too...with the JB4 and JB+. I think Burger Tuning ended up even selling the something similar to the JB+ add on to the JB4 under a different name.

Yeah, the CW box is fooling the MAP sensors and telling them you have lower boost than actual, which is why you may be seeing slightly less in VCDS. Ideally it would read the same on VCDS and you'd be making a certain amount more for real with the CW, but with the actual amount being higher, the tune may be pulling boost a little bit due to some other factor, such as IATs.

Right now I don't have the VCDS cable but I do have the P3 cars vent gauge with boost, battery voltage, air temp, exhaust temp, 0-60, coolant temp, and ignition timing. That is where I am reading the boost, in 3-1 it averages 12.6-13psi at 6800rpm and at 4-1 setting its pretty much the same without a noticeable gain in performance. I have read of several people running quite a bit more boost then this with similar setups so I am just trying to get a feel for why mine isn't running more or does this gauge read the map signal and its not real time with the CW?

^P3 is requested boost not actual. You need a boost tap to get the actual reading on the P3

Ok great, thanks, I will get one in and see where its at.

P3 will read low with the CW installed as will VCDS.
I'm kind of surprised you are not running into some DTC or CEL running it at 4-1.
Doing a hard pull in mine with the settings too high will either throw a severity 2 DTC(no light) or a Severity 1 CEL(light on dash).

What oct fuel are you running? I also am running meth injection so that might help a little to, maybe I should try 5-1 haha, its hard coming from a 600hp B5, these cars feel so slow :-(

Normally just pump. (92)
I've mixed in some E85 for fun.
Seeing as you already have upgraded cooling you will probably be fine. (I have my AWE Coldfront kit sitting in my garage currently)
What Meth kit are you running? Where did you add the taps? Pics of your setup?
FWIW, the DTCs I was getting were due to not being able to match the request boost.

Past owner did the AEM water/meth and has it tapped right behind air filter. Seems like a bad spot to me but haven't had time to research where people are tapping theirs. I would like to see it tapped in a hot spot so water/meth atomizes right away.

I wonder why they did so close to the filter...
I know S4matty has it spray after the TB. I was thinking about adding a kit and having the nozzles right before the TB because I don't want to drill holes in the actual charger.
Where do you have the tank for it?

It uses windshield washer fluid reservoir, this is nice because you get the heads up when fluid is low. In my B5 s4's I just sprayed windshield washer fluid with no issues but haven't tried that in this car yet.

I'm not sure what chipwerke you bought (stage 1 or 2) but you should be running the stage 2 mapping to stack it like that.

Hi,
Definitively, i suggest you to do some logging.
I don't understand why you would need a CW with a simple Stage 2 tune (ie. no Dual Pulley).
A proper tune should keep the by pass closed even at high rpm. So if so, i don't understand why you would have extre performance... except if the CW act also on the timing request via boost pressure manipulation.
Please excuse me if i've missed Something.

I bought a larger crank pulley at the same time as I bought the CW and just installed the CW first since it was easy. Crank pulley will go on soon. The CW is the stage 2 version.
