Trying to make an executive decision on whether or not to install my HPFP I've had laying around.
Thanks

I passed Cali Smog with HPFP and JHM stock profile. The same could be done with APR stick profile as long as you have he tiptronic version of APR software which does not delete the rear O2 sensor thus disabling the ECU from reaching readiness. JHM tunjng does not prevent readiness.
CA smog is visual inspection and OBD 2 scan for codes and readiness. There is no longer a sniffer. HPFP look identical to stock pumps and dont affect readiness.

Last time I had to smog about a year and a half ago, I was APR Stage 2. I took off the catch can and put stock PCV on, took off test pipe and put stock cat back on. Switched program to stock and drove it for a day or so to make sure I put several drive cycles on the car. I did not have VAG COM at the time so I had a friend with VAG COM check readiness after a day of driving and before taking it in for smog. It showed readiness after a day of driving and smog check was no issue. I am 6MT BTW.
I am now APR 2+ and expect to try the same in 6 months or so. I am not sure why the Stage 2 and Stage 2+ tunes would treat the rear O2 sensor different. I was told the drive cycles were required to get readiness. I have my own VAG COM now so I will monitor later this year when I have to smog again.

To prevent the CEL from being triggered from the OEM catalyst being removed, they prevent the catalyst readiness from running. If the readiness does not run, the CEL will never appear.

Thanks for the reply rongeur.
Do you have a HFC as well or the stocker? I'm surprised the car would even run correctly on the stock file with the HPFP. I thought our cars needed the correct file to run properly with the HPFP?
No sniffer?? That's weird. How else would they know if your hydrocarbons were too high? Last time I got smog get 2 years ago I ran the test pipe on stock file, (the shop didn't catch the test pipe on the visual), but it wouldn't pass the sniffer cuz hydrocarbons were through the roof. So I had to put the stock cat back to pass the sniffer.

If you're Quattro they can't run the sniffer anyway, unless you take it to a smog shop with two sets of rollers.

I was fine with stage 2 as well, stage 2+ screwed the pooch

This is true, I confirmed a lack of data streaming from the rear O2 in VCDS. Thus, you could try and force readiness a billion times and fail, drive a zillion miles and still not reach readiness.

2 years ago, I was sniffed and failed on HFC, this time around, swapped to stock cat and was only subjected to visual and obd 2 scan

We are talking about stage 2+

This true but I am pretty sure rollers are supposed to be obsolete with OBD 2 scanning now.

So can they tell you're tuned with the scan? or do they just check for CEL's?

On mine, he looked with a flashlight under the hood. I temp disconnected my water meth and tucked away the tubing under my RS4 driver side engine cover and swapped back to OEM valve cover / PCV / cat. I was otherwise with the JHM/FI downpipe and exhaust, lowered etc.
Then he plugged in his scanner which on the printout searched for readiness and codes.
The rub is, 2 years ago, same place, same visual and scan but then followed by sniffer on awd rollers which i passed on the APR stock map file for stage 2+ and HFC I failed on the rollers.

Now looking back, I was mistaken, I was the same 2+ as this time around which is even more aggravating. Appearently, you are supposed to be allowed 1 non-readiness for our years in the CA Smog legal papers and still pass but wasnt my case. Maybe that is why the rollers were used to pass last time and this time rollers were not used and just failed me, maybe the guy was lazy this time?

Yes, this is exactly the problem I just had. My APR software is turning off the O2 sensor, so smog station won't even hook me up to smog computer. I'm hoping to find a software solution to pass smog and run my HPFP.

Why would the HPFP cause you to fail smog? It's my understanding that the upgraded pump just has the capacity to supply more fuel for high boost situations, but operates just like the OEM piece under a stock tune/low RPM. Shouldn't affect your OBD2 at all.
Am I wrong? This is relevant to my situation too, I just swapped a HPFP on and will be needing a tune here in CA at some point. Figured I'd just swap the stock cat back on (and possibly flash back to stock map) and get readiness then smog it.

This was just my guess.
Back when the HPFP's first came out, guys would install the HPFP's themselves, and then "limp" over to their nearest software dealer and have them reflash to the HPFP software program. So I naturally assumed this meant that the car doesn't run right with HPFP on stock software. I would think that a bad running car would not pass smog. But if they don't even use the sniffer anymore than maybe I'm being paranoid over nothing. I just don't want to spend anymore money on mods if my car is not going pass smog without putting it back to stock, as I will be selling my car in the next 3-12 months.

The car will run just fine on stock software with the upgraded HPFP. It's actually good for the car, as it will prolong the life of the HPFP solenoid because the duty cycle drops with a large pump.

My car ran great on APR stage 1 with an HPFPupgrade stage 1 hpfp.
