View Full Version : Dual Pulley (DA + 2872ft / 89F) results --> [email protected]
Hi all,
Just thought I'd share my results from tonights Street Heat event at Bradenton Motorsports. Showers in the area, which resulted in high humidity, low barometric pressures, and generally higher temperatures around 8pm. I only ran twice, as it eventually rained out within an hour and a half being there.
The density altitude was 2872 feet in effective elevation, the national weather service says 89F, but my car temp gauge said 93F, and IIRC weather.com says 91F, so I'm not sure which one is 100% accurate based on my actual location. My mods are the same as before aside from finally upgrading my S/C cooling system:
GIAC stage II RACE file
GIAC TCU
AWE-tuning s/c pulley
JHM O/D pulley
Chipwerke Pro set to 3-1
AWE coldfront w/ upgraded pump (I should have done this a lot sooner!)
034Motorsports intake tube
aFe filter
2.5" drilled airbox
exhaust x-pipe
My fuel was 1/2 tank of my usual 93/e85 mix. Tire pressures were 39f/38r on Michelin PSS, spare/jack all intact in the car, so essentially no weight reduction. I did NOT utilize launch control, but used the "primetime" method. I also have a larger custom crank pulley on order waiting for its arrival and installation, hopefully I can reach my goal once FL weather sees high 50's/low 60's this fall before installing that larger custom crank pulley.

With my current set-up, it looks like I can run 10.9x-11.0x based on online calculators in "perfect" conditions. As such, I'm VERY VERY VERY happy with this time considering it was done in 2872 ft. density altitudes in temps between 89-93F (typical FL summer day, with high humidity). I'm also excited that I finally solved all of my WOT upshift issues, previously it would pause/hang for a split second on the 3-4 upshift with the Chipwerke set to 4-1 (up to .16 seconds recorded on logs on my 11.2xx second runs), I have dialed it down to 3-1 and now the hang-up hardly exists in logs.

The car was definitely down on power compared to running in cooler weather, on my previous 11.4xx in 1,300-1,400ft. density altitudes pre-s/c cooling upgrades I would see 1/8mile traps at least 1.5mph higher, and I would gain 25.xx-26.xx mph in the last half of the 1/4mile resulting in a 119.xx mph (I only gained 24.51mph on the run in this thread).
I also have larger pulley with my name on it, just waiting for it to be built (2-3 weeks). I may sell my JHM unit, but I may just keep it just to see if I can hit my goal with it, and then swap to see if there is a difference in times.

since you are really into timeslip and such.. i don't get why you haven't invest in LW rims + a proper intake, I'm sure this will cut .1 second ! ( maybe even .2 if you add cat-back + DP) as I suppose the more power you make, the more gain the exhaust produce) and a set of 200 treadwear tire would help you much too.. I ran the direzza Z2, sure they are more noisy than the pss, but they do grip more :) the z2 is, IMO, the more civil tire out of all the 200 treadwear tire.

How much boost were you getting with that DA? It's 115 degrees here in phoenix now. I may get 15 psi in this heat giac stage 2.

How much boost were you getting with that DA? It's 115 degrees here in phoenix now. I may get 15 psi in this heat giac stage 2.
I need a P3 boost gauge soon, I would venture to say based on my 1/4mile times that it's more than likely "only" 16-17psi that I saw last night given the barometric pressures.

Without the box, the GIAC will bleed at 10-20% up to 5,200-5,300rpm, will shut completely directly after, and slowly start bleeding up to 5% after 6,800rpm as the boost exceeds requested on a GIAC stage II. With the Chipwerke set to its mild setting, I get .08-1.xx% around 4,800-5,000rpm, but it remains at 0% after that.
Prior to adding a Chipwerke (and also a cooling system upgrade), I was only able to run an

[email protected] in 1,337 ft D/A and a

There is a possibility of LW rims/better tires and a true intake helping. However I'm not sure how much LW rims or 200 treadwear tires would actually cut as my 60ft times are already low; I've landed as low as a 1.58x 60ft time, but the deletion of weight could help in overall acceleration time I suppose. I could try clamping my aFe filter to the 034Motorsports silicon tube the next time I'm out at the track and using the bottom airbox as a heatshield to replicate it, but to be honest I'm not sure how inclined I am to do so given the opportunities of possibly heat soaking as you sit in the staging lanes.

no, not yet on a dual-pulley set-up. If I end up attempting a pure 93 octane run, I would prefer to wait until winter time so that I can at least obtain a time that would be favorable to a 93 pump user. I did run a 93 pump file for the past 3 weeks prior to my track night on a 30% ethanol blend; I can try that next time out at the track. I suspect that the times will be within .2-.3 tenths of the time in this thread based on logs and the timing targets I was able to hit (so 11.69-11.79 ish @116-117mph in 2900ft. D/A's).
What's the curb weigh of an s5 compared to a similar option s4?
I hear conflicting information such as the S4 being 100lbs or so lighter, but every article I've read says they are very similar.

Good to know, thanks for the explanation. I think I'll just start with a Stage 2 tune + TCU and go from there. Up here in the Northeast we get some pretty low DA's, especially during the early spring and fall. It's rather cool out today and my phone reports 983ft currently. However I remember back in the fall it was ~ -500 ft one night I believe....
When you run your 93/E85 mix, do you simply whip out your program switcher and click on the Race file? (Assuming you have one with the GIAC tune) Also, how would you rate the daily drivability of your GIAC tune?

Drivability feels refined like oem, but substantially more power across the rev range. When I look back at my single pulley time and how I ran it without a logging device, I actually think I could have ran an 11.3x in 368ft D/A's knowing now with a logging device on how to properly keep a watchful eye on IAT's prior to the start of any run. So yes, I would venture to say that with simply a GIAC ecu/tcu, D/A's below 1000ft, any form of intake mod, a race file with supporting fuels, you can run mid 11's (11.4-11.6) easily so long as you practice the launch technique. Yes, the GIAC comes with a program switcher; it takes less than 5 seconds of time to switch maps. I use it when I switch down to a lower ethanol blend on pump, however given the extremes of what the car was able to accomplish in 90 degree weather according to my logs and what I feel is a safe ignition correction amount, I'm more inclined to keeping it on my higher ethanol blend + race file the remainder of the summer. Keep in mind that this my particular car/environment conditions, it's best to log via VCDS for your particular set-up.

Thanks Loe, have you done any intake air mass logging? Would be interested in knowing your setup compares with the 1380-1430 kg/h which jran76 logged over 5 runs in 3rd gear for the CTS and ECS intakes
I have not, however I don't think my intake air mass would exceed a true intake such as CTS, ECS, AWE etc etc... IIRC, I think AZT tested a modified airbox + filter + intake tube a few pages into that thread as well and compared it to a true intake.
I have my reserves on open element intakes, however you know what they say about opinions [:p]

Yes, I do [poop]... I ended up going with the CTS intake on my '14 A5 3.0 TFSI, hoping the open element doesn't cause any issues and my exhaust drowns out the wine
