Hi all - I'm searching for a replacement car for my B8.5 S4 and really like the look and modding potential of the B7 A4 Avant with the 2.0T and 6 speed (manual is a must!)
Checked a few out online, but they all have oil consumption issues. After some research, it seems that it's pretty common for the 2.0T motor. Any recommendations? How does one diagnose oil consumption if I were to go look at the car? Will a compression or leak down test reveal anything?
I'm very flexible on color, options, mileage, location etc... as I don't mind slowly buying and upgrading pieces to sline. Just looking for something low, slow, and more space with the avant.
Anyone know of any good cars around DC area?
Anything else I should be worried about on this platform? Is there any difference in years 06-08?
Thanks in advance.
My current car hehe:

My recommendation in buying the avant is not buying it.

Buy one with oil consumption problems on the cheap. Then you get to build the engine right away.

Serious here. Should've not posted the pic haha... Not sure I need such a nice car as I would get near same enjoyment modding something new and unique. Plus more affordable and convenient with the space.
Was thinking the same on buying a bad consumption one and putting money aside... Although they're all over $10k either way.
Is the oil issue really that serious? Does every car have it or are there some that are good buys.

Problem with oil consumption is you won't know unless owner discloses. I just bought an a4 myself. Put on 600km since getting mine and has not budged off full yet , so I'm hopeful

If you don't mind adding oil every so often, there really isn't much to worry about. Some are obviously worse than others though. My last engine burned a quart in less than 300 miles, but that was a built engine and I don't think the rings ever seated properly during break in.

I brought a used A4 B7 and I have oil consumption issues. I used to put 1quart per 1000 miles. Till now I found out two places oil was leaking from.
1. Leaky vacuum pump. Tried re-sealing it but did not helped. So, changed it with new revesion. Now I put a quart every 2000 miles.
2. Recently found leaky VCG. No outside leak, but oil was leaking into spark plug well internally. Changed the VCG. I will see if my oil consumption reduces.

I just bought a 2012 avant after doing some research. After two months have had zero consumption problems. Sounds like some 2012's were still affected, but mostly the problems were from ''09-'11. That is what I read....good luck. Go 2012 premium plus s-line with sport pkg

First of all, nice looking car! [:d]
I had a 2008 RS4 - it was a really FUN drive. But I am an Avant guy. So, bought a A4 B8 Avant... and love it.
Sure you've seen this: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/125261-Official-Avants-Only-Classifieds-Thread! - there a number of B7s S4 6MT for sale. Take a closer look!
Also, where did you get the grey/silver-colored RS4 mesh front grill? Did you paint yourself or bought it?
