Well there are a ton of threads out there, but you need to really read all of them to actually know what you need to buy to do the conversion. I finally had time to get mine installed this weekend so I am putting all the info here in one post that i used to do the conversion.
I have a 2010 S4 with 3G B&O, the MMI 3G goes to the 2012MY.
I purchased the Head unit and Control Panel off Ebay. Cost me around $600 for the parts to do the conversion.
Really like the newer interface, also brings Video over through MMI, Bluetooth Audio without an adapter, and Google Maps.
What you need:
Head Unit 8R1 035 746C (A and B also work, C is just newer, i believe it goes to F now also)
MMI-Controls: 8T0 919 611 C WFX or 8T0 919 611 L WFX (with Start/Stop button) or 8T0 919 611 B WFX (without Start/Stop button)
In other posts a Module 4G0 035 082(HD radio) is what is prefered. My car is a MY10 it had a Radio module 4F0 035 082A(non HD radio), it worked half the time, the volume would mute out and when you try and adjust the volume it would be "Currently Unavailable". Note: you need to have component protection removed for this module also.
There has been mention that if you have the Radio Module 4G0 035 082"G", it will not function correctly for Sirius.
I purchased a 4G0 035 082 without a suffix as that was reported to work well. Had a ton of speaker codes pop up with this unit and audio wouldn't work. Found that the coding had a subwoofer amp turned on (you can also see the subwoofer option in the audio settings). to fix this, change the coding to 0200070(1)0000000001. There was a (2) before. This will fix the speaker errors and play out audio to the amp.
You can Check with a Vagcom Addreess 56-Radio to verify what you have.
GSM Antenna cable. I ordered mine from: (people also just use a generic GSM antenna off ebay with the Fakra connector and mount it by the window instead of using the OEM antenna that is already in the car.)
rfsupplier.com > Custom RF Cable Assembly Wizard:
1 x Coax Type: RG174; Length: 500cm; Connector A: Fakra D Right Angle Jack; Connector B: Fakra D Straight Jack (F03DSJ-F03DRJ-174-500)

Removing the Head Unit, MMI controls, running the Antenna wire are well documented from Richib86

Some Tips and hints that you may run into:
Enable The hidden Menu Via Vagcom
[5F - Information Electr.]
[Adaptation - 10] -> Channel 6 -> Change 0 to 1
To get into the hidden Menu hold the Car and Menu buttons down for 5 seconds.
My unit came out of an A4 so the Splash screen said A4 when powered up.
To change this in the hidden menu:
car/carcodingvehicle
Select No of Screen:
15 --> A4
16 --> A4 Allroad
17 --> S4
18 --> RS4
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/17813912/forums/www.audizine.com/carcodingvehicule.jpg
The car it came out of also didnt have ADS.
To add the ADS menu, just do the portions of this Guide that are in the hidden menu.
http://audienthusiasts.com/VagCom_FL_ADS.html
While you are in the hidden Menu, its a good time to activate the following if you want:
Enable Battery meter
[Hidden menu] [car] [cardevextdevicelist] [Battery] Enable
[Hidden menu] [car] [carmenuoperation] [Battery] Set to 5
I had 2 Faults after the install, they dont affect the unit, but if you want to get rid of them:
03276 - Please Check Software Version Management
http://www.audienthusiasts.com/Application_SVMError.html
03157 - Functionality limited due to Communications Disruption
Is due to having an option in the MMI car selection screen that the car does not support, ie: interior lighting. You need to go into the hidden menu and clear out the ones not compatible.
You may get error 03175 and this post shows how to get rid of it
http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/502060-New-3G-Plus-MMI-in-2010-Retrofit?p=10353818&viewfull=1#post10353818
You will get Component Protection when swapping the Head unit. To date the only way to get rid of it is to go to the dealer. I was able to figure out how to use a VCP cable to read and write the eeprom from the old to the new. It is partially outlined here: http://audienthusiasts.com/Infotainment_EEPROM.html
I may offer to help do this service but you will need to send me both units. This would save you from the dealer.

Good stuff OP!
The only thing I couldnt get to work was the steering response change when you changed the setting ADS setting (i.e. comfort to dynamic). It seems to always be in comfort. Hopefully your links in your OP will help solve this!!

I know if you try and change it Via the MMI it will not take, you have to do it from the button still. You can do the individual settings. From researching it, it is a limitation of the ADS module since the b8 doesn't have the latest ones, one could retrofit it, but i think its more hassle than its worth.

I did the same conversion right after purchasing my B8. However, I haven't been able to clear the 03157 fault at all. I'm sure it's something super simple that I'm looking over, but I haven't been able to find which setting doesn't correspond to my car...

Were you able to get to Address Word 44 (Steering Assist) through the vag com? I get a "No Response from Controller" error msg. I wonder if this is why i dont get the different steering modes. I dont have the dynamic steering option but it still used to get stiffer when i changed the steering to dynamic.

Tad confused, so you don't have ads, but you activated it on the mmi3g+. Steering is greyed out? How did you control the ads before the mmi retrofit?

My car is a prestige 2010 with sport diff. No adaptive cruise control with dynamic steering. So when i had the older 3G MMI i could change the steering to dynamic and it would get nice had heavy. After the 3G+ conversion, changing the steering to dynamic now does nothing. when i check dynamic steering via VAGCOM i throw a code for having no dynamic steering. I'm hoping i have some setting wrong somewhere.
Are you still able to change the steering to dynamic and feel the difference after the conversion to 3G+?

Sorry cant really help you much, mine works. I say look at the hidden menu and make sure that all the setting match the ADS guide in the first post.
Another + to the mod, is the presets are the first screen to come up, on the 3g you always have to press the mmi button which always bugged me.

Added some more details to the first post, my speakers cut out pretty often, i swapped the radio unit out since mine was an older unit and there are many discussions that a newer unit is required. Some new coding was need. The radio unit also has component protection! I haven't removed it yet, but audio plays with Media fine(CD, BT, SD), you just dont get radio or sirius.

So a 2010 US Spec car with 3G MMI would need this additional cable?
edit: I understand now. The OEM connector is in the D pillar and I just need this cable to get from there to the new H/U. Correct?

For the record, in the avant the spare GSM connector is right underneath the shark fin antenna inside the car. I haven't received my cable yet so I don't know if 5m will be enough.

I finished mine today. The 5m cable was fine even if I destroyed my fingers routing it to the shark fin antenna connection. The MMI module I got already had the the proper phone upgrade to support AT&T bands so I just had to plug in my ipad's SIM with an adapter and everything worked. Off to the dealer for CP removal.

If you choose to also replace the radio, you will need cp removed for both so do them at the dealer at the same time. You don't want to pay for 2 visits.

Good point! I have a bad feeling that my local dealer will have no idea what I am talking about though. They aren't overly helpful, and new things seem to put them on the defense, but $100 for the head unit is a steal.

Try and get a "G" or later. You want to make sure you get one with the updated modem hardware in it so that it supports AT&T SIMs at 3G. otherwise you'll be stuck with T-Mobile 3G or AT&T at 2G.

Yes it should. The whole reason for the original gsm modem hardware update inside the mmi head unit was to support the refreshed t-mo 3G bands.

I believe its the drivers side, but there's a connection on the pass side as well I forget what for. Anyways once you get the rear deck lid removed take off both the side panels and everything will be there.
For a proper step by step of that process i suggest getting a subscription to alldatadiy, or finding a copy of the factory manual.

Yes probably on the coding depending on what you had before.
Just drive the car around to fix the nav. Mine did the same thing. The 2g depends on what rev you have and what SIM card you installed.

Thank for the concise first post OP, I cannot say enough how helpful it was for cleaning up the inevitable DTCs.
I would suggest adding tips in the first post for people to read before undertaking this retrofit:
Make sure you have a trim tool, a pair of radio keys, and ample time to proceed slowly/methodically
Make sure you enable the green menu on your existing MMI before starting. Using your cellphone, take pics of every page of each of the following settings (will help you immensely later with DTC 03157, which you will very likely get):
green menu / car / cardevextdevicelist
green menu / car / cardevextdevicelist2
green menu / car / carmenuoperation
Some of the cables that plug in to the MMI are very short (too short in my opinion). Specifically, the yellow fakra d cable and the one with the green connector that goes into the quadlock. Unless you want to deal with this twice, and you don't, consider purchasing the GSM antenna cable in advance and running it before starting the physical MMI swap. {aside, I'm trying to find a vendor on Amazon in the USA who will make these, but the closest I've gotten is fakra z (not keyed connector, okay) straight jack to fakra z straight jack - not right angle}

Pasternack is an alternate source for the antenna cable (made in USA, unlike RG174 the LMR100 is a communications coax cable around the same physical size and is low loss):

If you're adventurous like me and eventually update your MMI 3GP to version 942 yourself, google earth will be broken afterwards. There is a fix script available from the dealer via TSB 2044940/2. It's a download of a tiny archive file, copied to an empty SD card and run once your MMI is fully booted up. In other words, definitely not something that should require more than an hr's time billed by the dealer.

I don't plan to buy a data plan for the car- do I need to run the fakes cable?
Also, I was feeling adventurous and did not capture the green settings of the original head unit. If I get CP removed on the new unit, can I throw the old one back in and grab those settings (or will the car now be locked to the new HU)?

cable is for the cell, so if you dont plan on using it, then you dont need it.
The CP is coded in the radio with the car info, so you can always swap back and forth, or if you sell your car pull it out and pop your old mmi back in.

Would this be relevant for folks outside of the US?
Understand that the 3G/4G bands used in other continents are different, hence would require a different head unit.
That's the only thing holding me back.

I was able to complete this conversion. I originally ordered the head unit and the controls from the notoriously bad eBay provider.
Turns out both units were bad. I ordered a second set from two different sources with success.
My head unit was said to be from a us SQ5, but was actually a Canadian SQ5. This unit did not have the sim slot but is in fact a 3G plus.

Success! Everything is working fine with the exception of a few coding things and the strange numbers in the lower left hand corner.
I get get a TMC logo once or twice but now it's just a pair of numbers. It seems to be a signal.

Great post OP, thank you.
Quick question, I am upgrading from a non MMI to 3G+, it's going to be intense I know. My question relates to the ADS and traction control switches seen above. I only have sport diff and TSC, my MMI has ADS on left and TSC plus hill assist and something else. So basically I need new switches for it to be accurate. My switches are currently below the shifter where the MMI controls will be and are physically different than the ones shown above.
Any idea where to get the proper switches? I can buy from the dealer if needed but need part numbers. They won't find the right switches with my VIN and can't find shit without the VIN.
I can get pics tomorrow if needed, my post is probably confusing...

Radio unit and mmi unit is not one unit, radio unit is located in the trunk left side, part number you can find on the unit or via vcds module nr 56. 2012 should be 4G0, but you may double check that just in case!

Hi guys, Just did this upgrade in my 2012 Prestige A4 Avant (3G Plus MMI module, control panel and FL Climate Control) and everything is working great with one exception; Anything to do with bluetooth phone or voice to text is super crackly and basically unusable. BT streaming music etc works great however. Anyone else experience this or have any suggestions? I did not have this issue with the BT on my pre-fl 3G MMI module.

Not sure but i'd love some info on this. Maybe it could be a coding issue? Sounds almost like the mic is "clipping" and the sensitivity needs to be adjusted, but I have yet to find out where or how. There is an adjustment in the MMI green menu diagnostics screen, but it had zero affect.

I did this install last night and removed component protection myself with the help of ould (thanks again, man!) - I do have a commmunication code on the 5F module but another thing I noticed is that my unit doesn't "ring" when I get a call, if that makes any sense. Still tying to figure that one out.

No, unfortunately my problem persists. I have even installed the fakra cable, routed to my sharkfin, to see if the GSM antenna was somehow related. It did not fix the problem, so now I am thinking it might actually be the unit itself or my OEM BT mic, which is either gone bad coincidentally or is not compatible somehow. [headbang]

Can't comment on the C and L, but auto should be the same part. The P/R/DS part of the center console can be removed from the rest, and I assume moved over to the new trim piece. I just bought one from an auto, and used it in my 6MT.

Pasternack is an alternate source for the antenna cable (made in USA, unlike RG174 the LMR100 is a communications coax cable around the same physical size and is low loss):

The RF people said the lmr is low loss and designed for runs of this length. That said, is seems like people are doing fine with rg174. You could contact their customer service department - I recall they were very helpful.

check you connections in the rear of the mmi and make sure there all cables are plugged in and to the correct plugs.
All my conversion is done and working perfectly with audi connect and google map. If you're asking me,
1). I'm sick of Tune2Air's shitty Bluetooth linking when streaming music.
2). I'm planning to keep the car as long as it'll hold up so updating it would bring it up to speed tech-wise.
3). Because it can be had for a fraction of the cost vs selecting it as an option (wc obviously wasn't available yet for my yr) at the stealership.

[Adaptation - 10] -> Channel 6 -> Change 0 to 1
To get into the hidden Menu hold the Car and Menu buttons down for 5 seconds.
My unit came out of an A4 so the Splash screen said A4 when powered up.
To change this in the hidden menu:
car/carcodingvehicle
Select No of Screen:
15 --> A4
16 --> A4 Allroad
17 --> S4
18 --> RS4
You may get error 03175 and this post shows how to get rid of it
http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/502060-New-3G-Plus-MMI-in-2010-Retrofit?p=10353818&viewfull=1#post10353818

just a quick question. in your 3G+ mmi upgrade thread you mention this:
In other posts a Module 4G0 035 082(HD radio) is what is prefered. My car is a MY10 it had a Radio module 4F0 035 082A(non HD radio), it worked half the time, the volume would mute out and when you try and adjust the volume it would be "Currently Unavailable". Note: you need to have component protection removed for this module also.
I also have a 2010 and upgraded last weekend. If the MMI fully shuts down overnight and boots completely in the morning, it works fine. If i stop for gas or an errand, then restart the car, my sirius radio, regular radio, and SD card music output mutes out/skips about every 7 seconds.
Was this the same experience you had? I have a 4G0 035 082G radio that i was going to try, scored on ebay for $40 bucks. But i want to verify that it is the problem before i pay the $120 for component protection removal.
thanks!

This has happened to me once, and the solution was similar to yours, I had to unplug the power from the MMI unit and plug it back in. Not sure why it happened unfortunately - but its only happened once so far in the year that I've done the conversion. Could be a faulty MMI unit, not sure.

I know, point was did your new unit booted always before cp remove also....anyway, scan for errors, if you have flash memory error or something like this, you may try update...but no warranty, that it will solve the problem!

Yeah before I removed the cp the mmi booted had no problems. It didn't turned off. When the dealer removed cp it worked fine as well. Then all of the sudden mmi won't turn on. So I was like ok maybe one time thing no problem unplug the mmi and reboot. But it just kept doing this over and over again.

I installed a 3g+ unit but a bunch of my modules don’t work such as my steering wheel controls. Please reach out with what green screen modules need to be changed and what do they need to be changed to?

Did you try radio and media? Might seem dumb but figured I’d ask. Strange that only one won’t work.

What route did you use to go from the passenger side foot trim to the shark fin on the Avant?
Thanks!

Hi infinkc
I poped the pannel on the pillar however i cannot find the fakra connector anywhere, i did the retrofit from mmi3g low to mmi3g+ and i connected the mmi unit gsm cable to the connector on the back vent (where the phone cradlle connects to the antenna), however there should be a second gsm cable on the back pillar (passenger side), but i can´t find it there, is there any other place to look for?
thanks

Right side of the trunk you should have antenna amp, take from there - easier! Not fully sure if fl have there this amp or not.

3rd time I’ve moved this 3G+ from cars. This was installed in a 2G, had to make my conversion harnesses to convert 2G to 3G connections, but that’s pretty easy.
Replaced screen, headunit, Ac controls, control panel, radio, B&O amp, tv tuner for 3G ones.
Removed CP as the headunit, amp, radio and Ac are affected, coded to my cars specs and everything runs great.
If you need help then happy to assist on some of the knowledge I’ve gained over my retrofits. The big one to remember for me was the radio coding if you had an external amp or not.

After taking a peek of the shark fin antenna i can only find one GSM connector cable, shouldn´t it be 2 GSM connectors? One for the phone cradle and another to the MMI 3G+ unit? Or is it just one GSM cable that splices somewhere into 2 cables?

So its either the phone cradle or the mmi3g+ unit that can be connected to the shark fin antenna? not both? this seems weird...

Ah i see, yes only one of my connections was the pink/purple colour for the GSM aerial. Didn’t know if my ROW car had something you’d guys didn’t.

Why do you want the phone cradle to be connected?
My connection was back of MMI3G+ unit, down the left hand side of the car, and into the pink/purple connection by the shark fin.

Well, the phone cradle can boost the mobile phone signal trough the shark fin antenna, I´m also trying to find the induction wireless phone charger "4G0051435B" (PITA to get this unit) since there´s no point of having the phone cradle sitting there without any use.

Well after digging for more info, i found out that there are 2 diferent kinds of phone preparation: low and high
The low version comes with the phone cradle, the high version uses the MMI3G+ multimedia unit instead of the cradle, so, since i originally had the low version alongside the MMI 3G Low, after i retrofited the MMI 3G+ unit, the phone cradle became basically useless (other than charging the phone). So only one GSM cable is available either for the phone cradle or for the MMI 3G+ unit.

I have a 2012 S4 that I upgraded the MMI 3G to 3G+. The head unit on the 3G+ system went out so I put my original system back in but now getting the component protection active message. Media and radio won't play at all. Anyway to fix this without going to the dealership?

I retrofitted a 3g+ mmi and climate control into my 2011 s5. Got component protection removed and finally got the climate control coded so the fans work. Everything is working great except for one thing that's bothering me. In the car menu its showing an a4 as the components came out of my old a4. Is there a way to switch the image of the car with vcds or hidden menu?

In the green hidden menu there is an option to set the car model. I can't remember where it is in there. Never tried changing it, but it might do something?

Hi there
Can you assist with removing component protection?
Thanks
Did you get this figured out?
I did this install last night and removed component protection myself with the help of ould (thanks again, man!) - I do have a commmunication code on the 5F module but another thing I noticed is that my unit doesn't "ring" when I get a call, if that makes any sense. Still tying to figure that one out.

Does anyone's system have the green cable to plug into green component on this picture? I have a MY 2012 S4. When removing the old mmi head unit I thought there was a green cable but when putting in a new unit I can't find the cable anywhere.

Hey boss. I’ve done this swap not too long ago but I can’t seem to get the 3g plus control panel to work. I’ve been using my old 3g high panels. I’ve tried changing the baud speed and everything but when I plug the new panel it. The two red lights just blink. Any set of codes you could help with ?
