Why, when you turn the dial back to open, the roof opens to 3/4? Then when you turn the dial to the spring catch, it goes back the rest of the 1/4. Why not just open it all the way? I did an air test at constant speed, and I can detect no more/less air in either position.

I can't open mine fully on the highway to annoying. Plus if the sunroof is open and windows are up it makes a really nasty pressurization bass noise when it's fully open.

From what I read in other threads that discussed this, it is to prevent buffeting in the cabin when the windows are all closed.

At highway speeds, having it 3/4 open is ok, all the way is annoying.

I will echo the others here..... with the windows up, the 3/4 open is perfect. Open the roof fully with the windows up and the wind buffeting is unbearable. The engineers at Audi know what they are doing in this category.

I will add to it. My B5 S4 had no "stop" you just turned it all the way and it went all the way open. There was no catch or stop. But it was annoying to have to figure out where to turn it to to stop the wind noise. Its nice and annoying at the same time. But atleast they took the guess work out of it for you.

The engineering of these cars amazes me -- sometimes that's a good thing, sometimes it's a bad thing. ;)

This is the case for most cars' sunroof. I believe it's due to what others have said regarding the buffeting noise.

My '16 S4 opens all the way when I turn the dial to the open position. Continuing to turn the dial into the spring loaded position does nothing.

I read online that only the cars with a panoramic roof have the 3/4 open setting.

My 2015 works differently. You turn dial clockwise to the first detent, sun roof open to 3/4 position. You must turn and HOLD switch further clock wise to fully open . Tilt is open push, and lower tilt is one push. The opening detent is clearly marked on the base of the switch.

My B6 S4 and A6 2.7t would open all the way. when actuated and with all windows closed there was severe buffeting in the cabin. To combat all the complaints that Audi received about this condition, Audi had the sunroof automatically open to about 3/4 position. The driver could then activate to open 100%. This is the way my 2010/2011/2014 operated. BTW, the same thing happened in both of my wife's Lexus.

To what panoramic roof are you referring?

My Q series has a panoramic moon roof but the sunroof is the same as my S4. It does do the 3/4 open though.

Not sure really which one they refer to, but that's what the owners manual says too.

I think mine needs a reset.

Just an update, I am at the dealership now for the 5k service. They said it is in fact broken, they are replacing a part. Ill post the part once I find out, just incase anyone else has this problem.

cheers.

Hey did you ever find out what the broken part is? My 2016 does the same thing. Opens all the way and the spring-loaded position does nothing.

Same problem here on my 2015 - opens all the way and no need for the spring loaded position

They didn't get the part yet, apparently it has to be special ordered from Germany. I don't have an invoice or part number yet, but it's some kind of $1500 stepper motor.

Finally came to a resolution on this. Apparently for 2016 they changed this. Of course Audi replaced the motor and then decided to check another car. Haha on their dime anyway. So it works as designed.
