View Full Version : I'm the guy that started the GoFundMe.com page, but...

So I posted the following a few months ago:
http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/687422-Dealership-Told-Me-I-need-my-Sport-Differential-replaced
and got tore apart by the beautiful people of Audizine.
For those of you who weren't able to experience my crash and burn, heres a short summary:
Differential Fault Error - Took to dealership - Metal in the differential - cost was $6k+, I freaked out, asked other people for handouts by creating a GoFundMe page [o_o] - Got bashed (with good reason) and advice [:D]
But out of all the things that happened the thing that helped me the most was the advice that I received, from purchasing a used differential, getting the parts sheet, only purchasing what I needed, I appreciate every single one of the people that helped and bashed me. Thank you!
Fast forward a few months to today:
I currently have a rainy day/anything messes up with my Audi fund, I purchased a used differential and changed it myself, changed my brake pads, changed the oil. My car is now running smoothly and beautifully. [wrench]
This experience really gave me more of a perspective and knowledge to know that I can do it myself, yeah it sucks, but its nothing I can't handle.
Thanks Audizine!

You should post the cost and tips for the DIY repair in case other people find themselves in the same position.

I paid $250 for the differential, $75-80 for shipping and $25 for life-time warranty on the part.

I replaced it with the exact same type of part I had, a torque vectoring sports diff.

Nice job man! I may have participated in your original hand-out thread and if I had anything to do with your redemption I will hold my chin high LOL!
Nothing is quite as rewarding as doing something yourself (or earning your own $ and paying for things yourself - I mention this because of the number of rich kids I come across that are given everything in life into their adult life then brag as if they earned their shiny things under their own steam, no way they have the same appreciation - and without appreciation you're just never happy or satisfied).
Now go enjoy the car! I'm impressed.

My sport diff's days are numbered. This would be huge. My dealer already quoted me close to 8k for repairs...where did you source the used diff? Sorry if you answered this already, haven't gotten to read all the threads in their entirety.

I did a lot of the work while he was guiding me on what to do next. He would stop me when I would be doing something wrong though. I wanted to learn how to do it, so we did it when the shop was closed on the weekend. :)

Car-Part.com -- They have a large number of differentials (if you're looking for one for you're B8 S4), just make sure you search for "Carrier" under "Select Part" and make sure its the same one that your car has, there are many different carrier codes:
Torque Vectoring Include: LFU, LGH, MBW, MKX, MKY
No Torque Vectoring Include: JKS, KBU, KRR, MBV, MFT
You should be able to see this on your differential assembly's sticker.

Great. The stealership told me which one I have but I will definitely confirm with the sticker if I go down that path. That's an awesome website! I'm sure the install can't be too tough but if you get around to a DIY I would love to have it to follow! My diff is holding up for now but it makes some noise when just coasting (wrong fluids got in it...).
How many miles did the one you got have on it? I've heard these things are pretty bulletproof so I'm not too scared of the mileage.

Found this: https://www.automd.com/160/how-to-replace-a-rear-differential/
The one I got has 90,000 miles, but I have lifetime warranty on it, so I wasn't too worried.
The parts are what makes it so expensive, because a brand new diff is like $4,600, which is absurd.

Yes I was quoted $5,700 + labor for mine on my 14.
