**UPDATED**
Thanks everyone for feedback to this post, I have updated these instructions to reflect the suggestions below and the requests for additional clarification.
Instructions: External Video Input to MMI Screen/Phone Mirroring
With a few simple parts, you can plug and play your phone (or even iPad, Roku, Apple TV) to mirror on the dash MMI screen. I installed this on my B8.5 S5, and the results are great. There will be lots of cables/wires/adapters involved, but it is an easy job and will cost you less than $200 and only a few minutes to install. I wrote this for mirroring my iPhone 6S, but it will work with any phone that has a video out adapter. Since the folks at Apple are greedy-planned-obsolescence-proprietary-cord scumbags, the Apple Lightning-to-HDMI adapter will cost $50, where those lucky to have a Droid phone will only need to spend half of that amount.
Car: B8.5 S5 (manual FTMFW!)
MMI Version: 3G+ w/Nav
Difficulty: 0.5 beer (0 beers being easy, 12 beers being a full day job)
Time: Less than 1 play-through of the song In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.
Cost: $150 - $200 depending on iPhone vs. Droid.
Why: I mostly use it to run Waze through the MMI screen when I drive long trips. Praise Jebus for Waze.
What it will do: Mirror your phone screen to the MMI screen. Do not attempt to stream Fast & Furious to your screen, your Audi will self destruct.
What it won’t do: Allow you to listen to FM/Sirius/Jukebox/SD card music in your Audi while the video is mirroring. This kit ports the video AND sound to your car, so for music you have to also run music off your phone. Which is fine by me since I usually stream internet radio in the car (recommend Radioparadise.com) or MP3s on the phone (recommend Porcupine Tree).
** Before you start: You will need to have enabled the Video-in-motion (VIM) (http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/471823-Vag-Com-tweak-Video-in-Motion-nice!) feature on your Audi through a VAG-Com. It is an easy hack, and there are lots of FAQs/resources online about how to do it. You just need to have the Ross Tech VAG-Com cable/software (http://www.ross-tech.com/), or find a friendly Audi owner who will do it for you (I enjoy helping local VW/Audi people hack their cars with my VAG-Com).
What you'll need:
Audi AMI RCA Cable Adapter (I bought OEM since some people had compatibility issues with the knockoff ebay/Amazon cables): LINK (http://parts.audiusa.com/p/Audi__/RCA-Adapter-Cable/53613589/4F0051510AA.html) $80 (thanks to my friend Pierre at AoA!)

NOTE: You need to have 2 charging cables; 1 mini USB to charge the RCA-to-HDMI converter (required for converter to work), and another that plugs into the iPhone lighting to HDMI adapter (optional, but recommended since you will want the phone to charge while mirroring). With both of those, the phone will charge while you mirror the screen.

Instruction Steps:
1. In your glove box, install the Audi AMI/MMI RCA adapter.
2. Plug the 3 RCA wires into the RCA-to-HDMI adapter (you'll need 3 of the RCA male-to-male adapters). Make sure the RCA-to-HDMI adapter switch is set to NTSC.
3. Plug the short HDMI cable into the RCA-to-HDMI adapter, and plug the other end of the HDMI cable into the Apple iPhone Lightning-to-HDMI adapter.
4. Plug the Apple Lightning-to-HDMI adapter into your iPhone, or what I did was install a Lightning extension cable, so you can then run the extension cable behind the glove box and down into the center console. I have my cable coming up into my ashtray so I can leave my phone there to charge while I use the adapters.
5. Once you have it all plugged in and powered, go into the Settings menu (while in Media), and scroll down for the options to switch the input to NTSC (vs. PAL) and 16:9 aspect ratio. In my experience, the phone mirror function would not work when I used PAL and the screen would be compressed if you chose 4:3 ratio.

One part of the install you can't see here is the iPhone cable I have running up through the roof of the glove box, under the center console and into the ashtray. Next step is for me to install a power source in the glove box so I do not have to run the 2 charging cables and dual power outlet into the ashtray power outlet. I'll get to that in the near future.
Additional notes:
- This setup requires that both sound and video be utilized from your phone, which means that you can't listen to XM while mirroring your phone. For me, I run Waze while also streaming music off my iPhone at the same time.
- You can substitute other devices for the iPhone; such as a Droid phone, Roku (it's been done), Apple TV (it's been done!), iPad, etc
Now you can impress friends/cops/lovers with your car that has Waze built in to the infotainment center.
I cannot take any credit for discovering this; many people have posted about this before with great instructions and pictures. I am just posting my experience and lessons learned. Other resources on how to do this:

Funny, I was thinking the same thing.
Hook the chromecast up to the built in wifi as well as your phone and in theory it should work.
Edit: Also, the chromecast works without wifi... Might just have to try this now [:)]

Well done!
Is there a way to display waze into MMI and have phone display another app? Technically it's not mirroring- more like extended display.
Any ideas to get this functionality?

How would this work wirelessly? I can't get my wireless to work. Not sure if I need a subscription to something to have it functional though.

I have a hot-spot capability on my phone and trying to use Chromecast with my phone, but can't get it to work how the video on YouTube suggests. I'd love to have Chromecast in my car so I can stream to it. I'm sure I'm doing something little wrong. I don't have the HDMI adapter for my car yet anyways.

I believe one of the newer updates for the chromecast allows you to "stream to nearby devices" from your phone without needing a wifi connection.
If there is enough interest on this and no one has done anything yet I might go pick everything up next week and see what I can get working.

yes.. full mirroring... waze .. google maps... messages... youtube... video .. anything your phone can do its just an exact mirror..

It's pretty much presenting a video image of your phone .. So all the apps your phone uses would work .. It doesn't care if the car had nav or not .. The big issue is will a non nav car let you present video on the screen from the ami adapter with the RCA's

why not just skip all the cables entirely and go with wireless mirroring...?
You still need everything from the Lightning to HDMI adapter back unfortunately. Wireless mirroring is mostly all done through digital so you need to convert to RCA. Also that only covers sound so you need the audio piece still, so yes you need all the wires to get this to work.
I kinda want to try this for the AMI -> anyone know if this works?

I have non nav mmi. I presume even if I mirror from my Android, Google maps for instance would look pretty bad on mmi due to lower res? I'm regretting not getting nav again as the 480x240 res is pretty unappealing visually.

I was able to hook up my Apple TV to my MMI. Process was Apple TV > HDMI > HDMI/RCA converter > RCA > RCA AMI cable. This gave me audio and video.
Two issues that bugged me though. I could AirPlay mirror my iPhone for Apple maps but it would stop mirroring if I locked my iPhone. Still need to tinker with this.
Second issue was hiding all the wires. HDMI/RCA converter has a micro USB port for power and I purchased a compact Energizer DC to AC inverter to also power the Apple TV.

https://c7.staticflickr.com/8/7307/27129544502_0b11db9a7f_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/Hkm1ph)[/url]
Routed the lightning extension cable into the ashtray. There is a small cover that pops out that allows the cable to pass through.
https://c3.staticflickr.com/8/7167/27129543922_a053a38abe_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/Hkm1ph)
All of the equipment is the center console...originally was going for AppleTV but didn't see the value, so repurposed for iPhone mirroring. Audi makes it easy with another pop off cover.
https://c1.staticflickr.com/8/7176/27129545832_9075064d04_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/Hkm1eh)
My 2014 came with this hole in the glove box...so I used it route the RCA's from the center console to the glove box.

If I did it all over, I would tap the lighter in the ashtray and tuck everything in the dash...and maybe drop an iPhone dock in the ashtray.

I looked into it, the chromecast will still need a wifi-connection with internet to work.
So you could use it if you had wifi in your car or setup a hotspot with your phone.
Honestly, you are better off looking into other solutions.

I don't recall it working on my old 2012 Q5 with 3G but it definitely works on my 3G+ 2013 S4.
Are you able to use it while the vehicle is moving, without the vagcom hack?

Hey guys, I wanted to do this to my car but I don't see the "External Video Input" option under my source menu.

Do I have to enable this in the hidden (green) menu? Would this option come up upon connecting the A/V cable in glovebox?

Basically same question I'm asking, I want to do this on my car but I'm unsure if I even have "External Vido Input" available on my MMI.
While researching other stuff I came across this post where it say B8's have "MMI HIGH 3G" whatever that entitles.
Source here: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/661107-MMI-3G-Navigation-Maps-update?p=11124835&viewfull=1#post11124835
Post #86 "You have MMI 3G HIGH on 2012 B8"
Additional info regarding my situation:
2010 B8 S4
Hidden "green" menu and VIM (Video In Motion) already enabled via VagCom.
Currently using the Tune2Air adapter for music streaming via Bluetooth, and was able to enable the additional "External Audio Input" thru Hidden Menu to be available ASIDE from "iPod" in the Media->Source list.
And I messed around a little trying to find something in there to enable "External VIDEO Input" but no luck.
So the question remains: When/How do I get that option to be available or IF it even is available on MMI High 3G.

Cant answer 100%, never know what some hackers are done somewhere. But "AV input factory style" on the screen for 3G High(soft Hnav) is only possible if car has factory tv tuner installed, if not, we need mmi head unit with green FBAS plug(not fully sure if all 3G high units have this plug) behind mmi headunit + other interface to create av input, not so easy like with 3G+(soft HN+) where software gives more features via AMI plug, BT and with sdcard etc.
One example to way in:

First of all, thanks for the reply, very informative response and link.
And... Well this just got more complicated and may have to scrap the idea.
I do not have factory TV Tuner on my car, so:
1st.- I would have to take apart my MMI head unit to check for that FBAS plug.
2nd.- I would need that "Second Interface" (MOST Audio/Video interface) which I already searched for on EBay (for the US) and there's none available.
3rd.- The install just went from a one-beer job to a whole 6-pack job (as Longwolf initially put it 😆)
4th.- Might as well buy the whole 12-pack bcuz you never know what other problems one may run into when attempting this new method, which is quite more complex and directions are not 100% clear for me. May have to go back and read over them again, but it's just seems like too much work for me at this time.
I mainly wanted to do this to be able to mirror my Google Maps/Waze due to the fact that the MMI maps are outdated; which I've done some research and you can update the MMI software +Map Database but you still don't have the Waze "Alerts" integrated.
Total Bummer... [headbang]

1. No, if you have cable you can check your part number and google will give you answer(i just covered my a..., as i dont want to give out fact that all 3G high units have that plug, in logic they should)
For example this link, down below is remark for 2G to have fbas, so all 3G HDD should have it as standard!
http://vnsmedia.shoper.pl/en_GB/p/AUDIO-VIDEO-INPUT-MMI-2G-HIGH,-MMI-3G-TV-TUNER-SIMULATOR/124
If you have radio removal tools its 2 minutes job to take it out and check.
2.No idea
Huge thread covering xcarlink same company as one link ive posted before.

http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/693801-Mirror-link-Miracast
3 and 4. I would say, its more less plug and play, just a bit work removing things etc...But its personal thing!
Yes, nothing new you get with new soft and map(just more 3D covered area and new routes-eu info)

Was looking for other options and came across this cable. You do not need the extra USB power for this one. All the reviews are very positive for use with the apple lightning converter.
https://www.amazon.com/iSimple-ISHD01-MediaLinx-Composite-Adapter/dp/B00LUX1F5K/ref=pd_sim_sbs_23_1?ie=UTF8&dpID=41R4w-9NCQL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=486DE26Y1DGD15T679HK
This really simplifies the connection, and doesnt take up as much space.
You would need the apple lightning to hdmi, the above cable, the mmi to rca cable, lightning cable, hdmi to hdmi and a single usb power.
I am going to try and modify the mmi cable to output 5v also, so it will just be one plug in. Will keep you guys updated.
Also there is this one, but requires power.

This one would save you the hdmi to hdmi cable, and you would need a dual input usb.

I purchased that exact one as well as the one OP had. I had high hopes but comparing both, the one without the power had a slightly grainier picture. The powered one was much more colorful and cleaner.

I am not sure about the cable AMI 3RCA purchased on ebay.
When I plug this cable in the car AMI connector, Should the menu on the MMI indicate something even if no video source is connected.
Or only If a video signal is detected ?
I got AMI Not connected on MMI...

Just checked this on my car. With the AMI-RCA adapter plugged in, you should see the option in the MMI Media Source menu as External Video Input. If you choose it with it not plugged in to your phone, it will be a blue screen or black screen.

Big thanks to Longwolf for the write-up and to Blackfunk for the hilarious (and very appropriate) post! I just put my wire-jumble setup together and it works.
Cons (and I don't mean to be an ungrateful MFer!)
- picture is a little fuzzy (could be part-MMI, part-converter to blame)
- picture goes black (and I assume audio cuts out) when phone is locked (quite expectedly, I guess)
Pros:
- I can put the phone away and just control everything via Siri on the Apple Watch ... she's a lot easier to deal with than Audi's voice recognition
I just need to find an app or something to keep the screen on at all times ... and then convince myself that doing that is worth it ...
Damn, I forgot to buy beer before tackling this ... [headbang]

Finally got some time to hide the cables. That was a whipathon. I followed a guide on OCarbon about removing the center console (http://blog.ocarbon.com/2010/06/b8-a4s4-trim-removal-guide). Then I also had to remove the glovebox. Apparently if you have the "storage" insert, it hides one of the screws. You have to use a small flathead to release two clips at the bottom of each side (http://workshop-manuals.com/audi/a4_mk3/body/general_body_repairs_interior/interior_equipment/shelves/trim_panels/removing_and_installing_glove_box). Then I also had to remove what looked like the airbag gas propellant "module" which sits right below and behind the glove box. So, other lessons learned: 6-foot cables (three of them in this case) barely make it from the center console to the glove box. The cables are taut to the point that a little body roll may cause them to pop off. Final word to the wise: if you get an Emergency Parking Brake failure, just flick the EPB switch in both directions. Apparently disconnecting the cable messes with the computer's mind and it needs to remember which way is up. *shrug*
Using Google Maps and watching Netflix is nyyyyyyyssssshhhhe!

If I did this all over again (and, knowing me, I will), I'd go the Android route: Screen Beam Mini2, HDMI-2-RCA, _ONE_ USB extension cable to the glovebox, short USB mini + micro combo cable (think "splitter" but don't use that in your search), and that's it! I like the small form factor of my iPhone SE so I'd have to get a Sony X Compact or Z5 Compact (both updateable to Nougat). I can then get the wedge mounts that hang to the side of the optical drive (magnetic mounts available). Routing three cables and then connecting to a cable that comes out of the ashtray or rear console is starting to annoy me. Also, my only decent integration app option is iCarMode, which works well (e.g., Waze + iHeartRadio) but I wish we could have CarPlay as an app just like Android Auto is stand-alone (and now knows to auto-launch when it connects to your car's Bluetooth and listens to OK Google commands). Another annoyance: when "docked", the Apple Music app sets its volume to "externally controlled" (so, somewhere in the middle) whereas the other apps (Waze, etc) are at full-volume. Weird how they have separate volume settings like that that you can't control.
Gab5, I hope this helps answer your question. Yes, the rest of the hardware is the same but if you follow my suggestion, you are down to just one wire. The power draw for the two devices is minimal.
UPDATE: I could also simplify my install by only needing to remove the shifter trim and ashtray and routing the wire behind the head unit. Then, instead of removing the entire glovebox, just remove the insert and fishtape the wire from behind the electronics to the cutout of the glovebox that the insert occupies. A fiber optic camera might help.

Hi guys
I recently tried to install a video interface + android box (limited to kitkat though) purchased on aliexpress...
Turned out to be a bit of a nightmare because of the lack of a proper wire harness which meant I had to "tap" into cables.
I finally got everything to work with waze, radardroid, google maps, spotify and everything I through at it...
Also installed a 4G hotspot which meant that data speed was awesome.
I then unplugged everything to fit the glovebox and then major bummer, the android box never started again...
I'm wondering if I could not just bypass it (i.e. trash it) and use an rca to hdmi cable + android hdmi stick or box + mimic instead.
Mimic would sit between the touch screen (already installed) and the android stick to control it the same way the way the original set-up was meant to work.
Anyone who's gone down this road yet?

Am i best to go down a similar root to the first post and buy the correct cables for my MMI and Galaxy S7, then follow the instructions and try to mirror link, or can i try and go the wireless root...Im ok with tech but not brilliant the wired way seems easiest but seems a lot of wire re-rooting..Any info as to whats the best wires to use and so on for Android would be a big help...

You also need to convert the HDMI out of the screen beam into RCAs to connect to the MMI. There is no digital video to MMI that I'm aware of. The down conversion to analog RCAs will force a significant decrease in display quality.

Hey, guys!
This thread really helped me getting started on what I needed in order to mirror my phone to the MMI 3G + Navigation on my S5 and SQ5. So thanks!
This is what I did:
I bought the following stuff from Amazon and spent less than $50!
RCA to AMI cable - http://a.co/283keke
RCA Male to Male couplers - http://a.co/bWgupu9
WiFi display to HDMI and AVI - http://a.co/8XbCfST
On the MMI, I set the AV standard to PAL and the aspect ratio to 16:9. I had to adjust the color and contrast for it to look decent.
The bad stuff:
The MMI screen cuts a little bit of the phone content on the left and right. For reference, when using Android Auto, the screen cuts a tiny bit of the oval that has the phone, navigation, and music icons on the right of the screen. It doesn't really affect anything though. You can still see google maps and so on.
Audio is not as good as bluetooth. This was not a surprise since the audio is going from digital to analog. It still sounds good though.

Hi guys,
I did pretty much the same in my 2013 S5 sportback, except I connected a Microsoft Wireless Display v2 dongle instead of a chromecast. Its best because it doesn't need a wifi network to work. So AMI to RCA cable, HDMI to RCA converter (set to PAL like the MMI), and the Microsoft dongle on HDMI. I also added a 12V to 5V with 2 USB cable from the fusebox to the glovebox to power the Microsoft dongle and the HDMI/RCA converter. I connected it on an existing "after contact" fuse to it is only powered up when the car is started.

Mirroring works great, it allows me to use spotify and waze of my Sony z5 compact wirelessly.
However I also noticed an audio quality loss compared to bluetooth audio, like Whinny SQ5.
I used to listen spotify in the car with Bluetooth on my phone and it looks the music has now less bass for example. I tried to customize the audio settings in the MMI/bang&olufsen settings and in the phone but no luck yet... Did someone found a solution to this ?

Another problem I noticed in addition of the audio quality : I can't access internet anymore when screen mirroring is enabled. I think the phone is trying to use wifi instead of 3G/4G when the mirroring is enabled. Does anyone know how to correct this ?
Or maybe I should buy a chromecast instead and enable wifi hotspot on my phone ?

Just tried with an MHL cable instead of the Microsoft Wireless Display v2 adapter : audio quality is great (quite the same as in bluetooth) and no more 3G/4G problems. And it also charges the phone while connected. Now I just need to find a proper way to route the cable from the glovebox to the center console, ending in the ashtray would be great.
Oh and I added a small widget on my phone to swap quickly the audio output from bluetooth to the MHL cable when it is connected (without disconnecting the bluetooth completely, to keep the phone calls in bluetooth when the cable is connected). The app is called BBS (the free version doesn't have the widget).

I found a way to route the cable from the glove box to the ashtray area. I dismounted again the glovebox and used one of the two existing top holes in the bottom. Then i removed the AC panel by pulling the panel from the bottom with a hook under it. So i discovered there are existing holes on the lower side of the panel. So i routed the cable from the back of the glovebox to the AC panel hole.
It is working fine but I have a last issue : the battery isn't charging enough compared to the power consumption of waze+spotify+screen mirroring. While connected with the MHL cable, the phone is in mode USB charge and not AC charge/fast charge. I saw several forum threads with the same issue in MHL.
Does anyone here has the same issue or a solution ?

I just bought a 2018 A6. After reading this thread and looking all around the car, I did not find the AMI cable socket. Called Audi support and they say that in new models (after 2017 or so), the AMI socket is no longer present and is replaced by USB. I really doubt USB allows feeding video to the MMI system.
Does anyone know of a viable solution to mirror a phone in new models?

Essentially you plug this into the AMI adapter and your phone's USB into this box.
I tried MHL but my current phone doesn't support MHL however I did use it with my old phone and the image is terrible. It might be the HDMI converter I'm using.
We'll see and I'll report back on Wednesday.

Gold!!!
This thing works great and in my opinion is a total no brainer for someone who does not have Android Auto or Car Play. Looks excellent. It appears you still need to use the microphone cable for sound on Android but I bet there's away around that >>> use Bluetooth.
Either way it's a super clean and effective method to get the job done.
Plug the box into a usb power supply (lighter power port). You probably already have one in your arm rest for your phone. Don't worry you still can charge your phone through the box!
Plug the composite cables into the AMI RCA cord
Plug your phone into the box with USB (it charges too!!!!)
Switch to the Media input and change to external video.
I'll redo this post with pictures from Tapatalk since the damn forum on desktop won't let me do it....... booooo hissss.

Has anyone found a good wireless solution for the iPhone? I bought a wireless HDMI dongle from Amazon, and I got the screen to mirror no problem, but when I played music from my phone it would constantly stutter, so I sent it back.
I read of some folks modding an appletv unit to run on 12VDC but thats probably out of my skill set.

ami to rca definitely doesnt work on my B8 S4, so i am guessing only 3G+ supports this.......damn.....[=(]
Has this been confirmed? I've seen a few similar questions in this post but no confirmation.
I've bought (and returned) 2 of the cheap 3rd party AMI RCA cables which show up in the MMI as "device not supported"
Wondering if it's worth spending the dough on the OEM cable although the description on Audi's site indicates compatible with MMI 3G+.
I have a 2010 B8 S4 with VIM, MMI nav, multimedia, etc. I have all the other parts and they work together as I've tested them on my TV. The blocker seems to be the AMI cable.
Would really love to know if I'm chasing a dream here.

I found on a random website that there a 3 versions of MHL. The last MHL 3.0 allows charging up to 2Amps while MHL1.0 allow only 500mA. That may be why I can't get enough power from my MHL cable, even connected on a 3A USB power supply connected on the fusebox. Just need to find a new MHL cable then...

Hi guys,
I have the same problem. A bought two RCA cable from ebay (china). But NO cable is working. Both of them show me "device not supported."
I tried to find original part number of RCA cable. It is: 4F0051510AA
When I tried to find what models are supported to this part number, I found that A4 models do NOT support RCA cable.
So my question - Tried anybody the RCA cable on A4 B8???
I have MMI 3G High A4 B8 2009.

Hi Didiee,
thanks for answer. I understand that RCA cable from China may not be the same like original Audi cable. But when I checked supported models of original Audi RCA cable, I got this result:

And there is no A4 models. If A4 models does not support original audi RCA cable, I am afraid about chinese RCA cable. Probably there will be also no support.

Just wondering what version of Android you have. I have made the box work with most iphones (iphone6,7,8) a few android phones (Galaxy S7, Galaxy Tab A), but not others (Another Galaxy S7 and Moto G6play).
Since it has worked with some samsung products, but not others, make me suspect it may be android issue. Maybe you can point me to the right direction.
As good as this thing is, I was unable to find any support from the manufacturer, or even any other forums that mentions this product.
Anyone else who can help or suggest any solutions, would greatly appreciate it.

Have a 2017 SQ5... saw the original set up, which is easy to come by via amazon, but don't have access to a vag com... am I SOL?
Not necessarily SOL. There might be an AZ member with a VAG-COM near your location.

Hello guys,
This looks like a great solution for me to use waze. My car is 2011 A5 with 3G High Navigation. Will the AMI to RCA cable work on this car? It seems that ETKA is not finding that cable for my car, but it does for B8.5.
Anybody used that cable on the B8 with success?
Thanks.

Thanks.Pretty sure you need 8.5 mmi for that cable to work.
