In my 2003 C5 A6 2.7T I noticed the carpeting in the rear passenger footwell was getting soggy. I notice wet carpets seams to happen often enough for various reasons and figured I would put up a post incase someone did a search looking for the answer.

My problem was that the grommet for the cable of the hood release came loose allowing water to come in. See picture below. I rectified it with a small long screwdriver. To give myself a little more room I opted to remove the ECU cover. Just shove that little round grommet back into the hole so that the sheet metal of the car fits in the groove and the grommet is snugly in place. Be careful as the first time I did it, I shoved the whole grommet in the hole by accident and had a bitch of a time pulling it out. Just be patient.

Hope this helps someone.

Did you lubricate the cable to make sure it doesn't happen again?

Lubricate the cable; that seams like a smart idea, and no I have not.
Guess I know what to do if this happens again. What type of lubricant would you recommend?

Probably something as benign as WD-40 would work. Just need to run smoothly.

Thanks for posting this. My 2005 allroad gets water in the driver's pedal box after heavy rains. I just returned home from a trip and my car was at the airport. We had heavy rains and sure enough the carpet was wet. I'll check the grommet and hopefully mine is dislodged.

Also check the sunroof drains, and the drain under the battery tray, they all get clogged and cause water to enter the cabin.
