View Full Version : Vibration at idle (park/reverse/drive)

Just picked up a 2006 B7 Avant. First automatic car in...umm...a decade, and it has a pretty retched vibration at idle/very low speed. Goes away in neutral. Figured it was motor mounts, so I switched those (snub/driver/passenger—all stock replacements) out today and there was only a slight improvement (passenger mount was definitely blown, driver's was on its way). When in park and physically looking at the engine, it definitely appears to be vibrating some. Should I look into the transmission mount or is there another typical culprit?

Other small issues that may be worth noting (ie, possibly a torque converter issue):
- When I shift the car into reverse, there is a tangible delay, maybe three seconds, before it pops into reverse...I'm tempted to even call it a clunk, but it's not quite there.
- The car also slightly jerks when I come to a full stop. It appears to be the car going from second to first gear, as when I put it into "S" mode and downshift myself, it doesn't act the same.

Thanks!

I have the exact same issue with the vibration (no issues with shifting ect). I am looking to replace the trans mount eventually as I have done everything you have to fix.

If you have a a Tiptronic get used to it. They tend to vibrate at idle. Change all you want it won't go away to a perfect A8 idle lol.

Hah, seriously? Searching shows random one-post recommendations of various things such as carbon cleaning, inner CVs, even underdriven pullies...is there nothing definitive, though?

trans mount and/or snob mount, the stock one can disintegrate

This. In all honesty, I doubt replacing even all those mounts mentioned earlier does much to help the vibration. I've had my 08 B7 A4 2.0t since new, and it has vibrated like a massage chair since we got it (when at a stoplight). This vibration is just a feature of the engine when mated to the Tiptronic transmission. Audi fixed it in the B8 (2009) model yr. I've driven the B8 models when given them for loaners by the dealer, and no vibrations at all. Sometimes it vibrates less on some days. Sometimes more. I don't know how this got past quality control at the factory, as it's unacceptable for a luxury brand. Just get used to it.

You guys are depressing, haha. I realized today that theres a slight vibration during "hard" acceleration, as well. I'll order a transmission mount and see if it improves. Are there any more mounts known to go bad? Diff mounts?

On the positive side, you get a free massage when at stoplights! I get no vibration when I accelerate at all, so you may have a mount going bad.

The best way to eliminate or lessen 80-90% of the vibration is to increase the idle rpm speed using vagcom. I believe there's a thread somewhere on this.

I changed it on my parent's 07 A4 and the idle is very smooth now (not A8 like, but definitely acceptable).

Thanks!Could be anything to the TC, but I'll start with a fluid change. In all honesty, I've never experience any vibration whatsoever on my transmission, and it shouldn't be unless the mounts are shot.

Try this. Took 30 seconds and cured my vibration issues when stopped and in gear. All we did was increase idle by a few RPM.

Yeah, will have to find someone with a Vag-com locally. I sold mine years and years ago. Tranny mounts are on order, as well. Will update when I have something worth updating.

Had the same issue - Took it to a dealer as part of my service and found that the engine mounts were cracked and leaking - Will get the vehicle back tomorrow and provide an update. I also had an issue where my 2nd to 3rd tip shift was a little rough/jerky but hopfully all good - a transmission fluid change is like $900!

Just did the transmission mounts. Passenger side top bolt made the job way longer than it should have been (about an hour), and adding insult, it made no difference in the vibration. Bummer.

I'm telling ya...get used to it as a feature of the car if you have a TIP. Think of it this way...most have to pay a couple thousand for a massage chair at brookstone. Here you get one for free in your B7.

I'm beginning to accept it, haha.

On your transmission issues try reseting the tranny to factory settings. You can do it with VAG COM or directly on your car by starting the car (engine off) pressing the acceleration pedal all the way to the flor and holding it for 20 seconds, and then starting the car. If you are in a place with low noise you will even hear the tranny ECU getting the reset. This made a big difference for my car and i was expereciening the same problems that you describe.

Apart from the epic necro, are you serious? What you're talking about is a throttle body reset, nothing to do with transmission.

Make sure if anyone does this y'all read and research it and have a vagcom. It is a step by step thing that you do not want to screw up!!!

I was thinking the same thing.

I thought I was the only one. [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23] I changed the motor mounts three times, first time were track mounts. I ended up returning them. Second time I tried audi mounts, and I had the same results. As you can imagine I ended up returning them again. Last time and actual mounts i got street density from 034 motortsports, it got a little better but not as much. I tried driving the car so they adjust themselves. I changed and align the snub mount. It made no difference. I gave up and got used to it. Lol maybe it used to bother me a lot because I used to have an s class, but not anymore. "Fuck it" solves a lot of my problems.

This affects my car too. It's annoying for sure, but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

I have recently fixed the vibration issue on my 08 A4 Quattro Tip. The main culprit is the transmission mounts, but the motor mounts play a role also. I recommend using this kit (https://www.ecstuning.com/b-034motorsport-parts/street-density-line-transmission-mount-priced-each/034-509-4006sd~0/) on ecstuning. You can also buy the mounts separatly and make your own spacers. I roughly outlined my diagnosis process in three tumblr posts (http://themochinist.tumblr.com/tagged/a4vibrationfix).

Another thing that worked for me after checking mounts and fluid change was actually adding in Lucas auto trans restore. In the 500kms since it actually has made a difference.

Thank you for the post, I just bought my b7 Quattro a few months ago and the vibration has been driving me nuts. I believe I found another option to paying out the nose for the 034 kit and fussing around with making my own spacers. JHM offers a kit that looks like it should work. https://jhmotorsports.com/products/trans-drivetrain/transmission-mount-spacer-kit-jhm-for-auto-tip-b6-b7-s4-b7-a4-and-c5-a6-s6-allroad-v8.html

I just ordered these from JHM last week. Also ordered the B5 transmission mounts (they are only $10 each on ECS) and RS4 motor mounts. I've read the RS4 mounts are shorter, but I need to find drawings to confirm and then I will likely add spacers to those as well to get everything aligned properly. The vibration has always been there on my car, but the last few years it has increased and just recently I had a soft code through VAGCOM indicating a bad motor mount.
