View Full Version : H&R coilovers installed - max hight in rear and min hight in front - FTG 25.5 all 4
I installed a set of H&R coilovers last weekend and in order to reach a level FTG measureme, the rear springs are at the max of the recommended adjustable range and the fronts are at the opposit extreme.
I would like to have a 1/4 inch forward rake, any suggestions?
Thanks.

WOW!! I'm facing the exact issue on my '12 A4 Avant after installing H&R Street Performance Coils last week. I did some research and I'm now thinking the only option may be fabricating a 1/4" thick spacer from aluminum or stiff rubber that can be installed 'on top of' the rear springs. I initially considered placing them 'under' the adjustment fixtures which sits in the lower control arms but this would have them siting too far up in the holes on the lower arms.
Stay tuned... I'm not loving that reverse rake look but the ride and handling are just awesome.

You could contact H&R. They likely have springs with matching spring rate that are taller to fit your rear perches. That's what I did with my RSS+ setup. Probably run you $150.
Good to know I am not alone- The ride is great so that is a plus.
I have seen spacers around, I'll have to go back and do some more research. In the interim I will contact H&R to check out the longer spring option.
Thanks for the feedback

How was the install itself? Did you run into any issues or have any advice on what not to do? I'm about to tackle this project Sunday if I can get some garage time.

Would love to know also if H&R offers a longer spring or offers any solution on getting that extra 1/4" height.

Fronts are straight forward but the rear spring are easier to remove and install using Motorcycle shock spring compressors which are smaller as there is so little room to work in that location. Great if you can get a lift as it makes the job so much easier. Also...many folks have an alignment done right after installation but I opted to drive the car for about 100 miles (some over uneven roads) to help everything settle. Let us know how it goes.

Ok great, Did you use any DIY posts for reference or was it pretty straight forward?

+1. Wish I had known that it rode so low (front and back) at the highest setting with no room to adjust up. The ride/harshness is actually fine (for me). But, the low setting and some occasional binding noises coupled with the fact that H&R customer service wasn't that great to deal with, makes me think I should've spent a little more and gotten the Bilsteins. Just my two cents.
I spent more time on each corner and I was able to squeeze a few millimeters here and there to a very nice finish; and still within the recomended operating range. I love it. The alignment went better than expected, aggressive but palatable.
Summer shoes and a bath tomorrow then I'll post a picture.

Any camber issues on the alignment?
No, 1.5 in the front and 1.6 in the back.
I am with ptper at this point; 23" front and rear and no room for adjustment. ECS was worthless in their support. Off they will come and on to KW or Bilstein. What a shame.
All, does anyone know the hight of a compressed installed rear H&R spring?

I did mine over the weekend and so far don't have any real issues that have come up. The rears I set at the max which ended up being about perfect for where I wanted them to sit after settling. so that might take minor adjusting and the fronts I started out at the max, and it was 2" taller than the rear so I dropped it 3/4" and have put on about 200 miles on them so far. Waiting to settle down and see where it lands.
I have some rubbing in the right rear with a a full tank, 4 passengers and a big bump. That is with a rear FTG of 23".
I am also running 19x9.5 w/ 265-35 PSS tires.
On a related note; H&R are champs in my book, they are sending a set of new rear springs that they have bench tested and taller rear perches so I can reach the desired ride hight. Excellent customer service!

Good to hear! Hope they turn out well for you. Please post pics with the new height, if possible. [:)]

Are you currently at max height and experiencing the rubbing you mentioned?

Yes, but that is the issue I am working through with H&R. Specifically, the rear is max hight and the front is at minimum hight.

You only rub when your car is fully loaded though? I guess that's not terrible although it would be nice to not have to worry about rubbing. Your significantly lower FTG than I am though. With my rears maxed out I'm at about 25.5. That's odd

How do you know what H&Rs recomended height range is for the springs? Is it just as far as you could adjust them or is there a marking or something else?

you are where I want to be (25.5). I measured the spring fully weighted by the car and it was 5.25", Ryan at H&R mentioned that was a problem, so he bench tested a new set and sent them to me; He feels the springs alone will fix the issue.

there isn't a marking on the spring perch; they provide a measurement range to stay within and where to get that measurement, max is 45mm in the rear. I don't have the notes in front of me to provide the remainder of the details.
They do note a drop range of ~1 to ~2 inches.

45 mm from what? I was just trying to set my wheels to flush of the fenders, is this in recomended range? Possibly a finger or 2 higher

It appears I cannot post attachments, the perch has an adjustment range of 35 to 45 millimeters, which should translate into a drop between 1 and 2.2 inches.
Does that translate into the 1-2 finger gap you desire? Not sure. Measure your stock hight and subtract an inch and that is your starting point.

After re adjusting last night for about an hour and a half ha, I have the rears maxed out to reach 25.5 and the fronts at about 25.75. I def heard a couple rubs this morning when cornering hard, which sucks but I love the look. Might need to do sways? Idk

I have the AK and the full USS sways and end links, it will help. Also, there is an option of a taller perch in the rear for up to 15 mm more space.

Ugh me too...... I really wish I saw this thread before. I installed mine today. Same probblem. I don't know how so many people are satifided with these coilovers...... This over sight on the part of H&R makes them "junk" IMO.
But ride wise they are exactly what I wanted. Stock like ride.

Ha I need to get a taller spring or something. After a few weeks of driving it's just too low. If I have someone in the back I rub on anything more than a crack in the road.

What was the fix? Did H&R send new springs to you for free? Do I need to speak to someone directly and have certain info on hand for them like serial numbers and such?

I called H&r directly yesterday. I even mentioned that they are helping somebody else on the forum. The guy basically told me to go F myself and deal with it.

I will probably get flamed for this but I purchased a large washer and put it under the rear rubber spring perch.
Gave me .25 inches of lift in the rear. My H&R OEs were dead level and I wanted a bit of rake. 15k+ miles and no issues at all. I did remove the stone guards when I did it and had to trim the alignment nipple off the rubber perch.
Obviously, do this at your own risk :) I looked into other lower perches from other models with the parts guy (who probably now hates me) but couldn't get the answer I was looking for and this was an inexpensive option. I didn't even need to remove the rear spring to install them I just used compressors and slid them in.
*EDIT* I just remembered they sent me an extra set (their shipping got messed up and they overnighted me a set while the other was lost in shipping - I had paid for 3 day because I wanted them by the weekend) if someone wants them for 20 shipped. Here is my original order:
(2) ASTM F436 FLAT WASHER 2" ZINC PLATED - DrillSpot 0156050 ASTM F436 FLAT WASHER 2" ZINC PLATED $18.12
Shipping & Handling (Standard) : $7.48
