View Full Version : Audi a4 2.0 engine siezed. Non spam!!!!

My engine siezed when I went to start my b7. Drove about 40 miles around town. Car ran fine. I went to park at the store and stalled out when I parked thinking I was in neutral when I was still in first. I returned from the store and went to start the car. The engine cranked over two or three times and it just stopped. I went to try and start it again and the starter engaged but didn't turn with the engine resistance. Went through the steps to see what was going on jump start, charged battery and found out the engine is locked up. Well what the tow driver told me. http://i901.photobucket.com/albums/ac217/adubluvbp/image-12.jpg Put a socket on the crank and tried to turn it by hand. Not sure how much pressure to apply to turn it by hand but I put at least 100ftlb of pressure and nothing. Also the timing belt did not break. Car has 87xxx miles total with 9xxx miles stage 3. What is the next step I should take to see what is locking it up?
PLEASE do not trash my post if your not going to help thanks. Yes this is my second post because the last one i was accused as a troll. Also I am active duty so it's impossible to work on my car everyday so excuse me if I don't reply frequently.

When you trying to turn the engine with the wrench, are the spark plugs removed?

I doubt you put 100 ft-lbs on it with that ratchet. You still should have been able to turn it though if the plugs were out and the car is in neutral. If you think it really is siezed, you really don't have a lot of options left. You could boroscope the cylinders and look around, but you are probably going to have to start taking stuff apart. Drain the oil through some cheesecloth and look for bearing material or metal shavings.

No way you put 100ft-lbs on the crank using that. Seriously. Are you absolutely sure that the starter is still good?
Do you have a metal drain plug? I'd start with Adam's recommendation: check the oil for any metal fragments. If you have a metal plug, so much the better. If not, cheesecloth should work just fine.

It looks like you're running a BOV. Without knowing what tuning you're running, it is entirely feasible that you have been dumping metered air (from the MAF) out to atmosphere, and as such your car has no idea what its doing with the fueling. I could be out to lunch here, but this could have somehow led to a totally jacked A/F ratio. It's entirely possible you got a lean condition and melted something. As stated above, try to boroscope it. Should be pretty obvious if something is toast inside. That, or pull the head. It isnt that tricky.

first off did you check the oil level in your car to make sure there is enough oil in the pan because the low oil light does not always come on until it's to late.

Serious answer here because I'm tired of all the ridiculous posts you make.
1)Put car in neutral
2)Set parking brake
3)Disconnect coils
4)Pull plugs
5)Put large breaker bar and socket on crank
6)Push/pull on bar
Does engine turn over? If yes, not seized.
If no, push harder.
If still no, rebuild engine.

Some people shouldn't own a car, let alone an Audi
Call ECS. Ask them if they have any audi's in stock. If not, ask them to order one from Germany. Then, ask them to pull the engine and ship if to you.
Then, come back and start a thread reporting on the customer experience.

Are you turning the crank the right way? Who hasn't killed an engine by letting the clutch out accidentally in first gear? That does not weld engines together.

First off its probably not the best to have a bov. Haven't had any problems with it. I did have a forged diverter valve but the main o-ring went and I've been lazy to try and order the o-ring.
I have had all the tuning done by a shop gp motorsports in Rockville md. They mainly did a unitronic stage 3 flash.
The oil level was good.
I did remove the spark plugs when I tried to turn the crank clockwise. Exactly what is a safe amount of torque I can apply to try and turn it?
When I first get a chance I will drain the oil and look at the drain plug.
Thanks for the help guys. I do agree that it's crazy to hear of the engine locking up on start up. But I'm not making any false accusation. The car literally ran perfect before and all I tried to do is simple try and start the car. I simple started this thread because myself and two shops Gp autogroup and New German Performance have no clue on what the problem is.

Actually just bought the $6,000,000 sub. Can't wait to replace my factory one with this one! I might need to pick up that left handed metric screwdriver to do the install though.

If not he may just not have experience.. Suppose they should do some research first though.

He's been on AZ before and always asks questions but his stories/details never add up. Look at his pasts posts. If I recall correctly his dad "owns a shop sponsored by Garrett" and he mentioned somewhere that two reputable shops can't figure his car out yet he's only had this problem for this week, he has "no time to work on his car because he's AD" but has time to go to two shops and try and do work on it himself?
If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then...its a duck.

So today I finally was able to get the crank to turn. I turn it over many times and cannot figure out with is going on. I put the starter back on and cranked the engine. Still had no problems. i put some things back together to start the car to see if the timing was correct. So I started it and got a clicking sound from the head. Before I do anything else I would like to check the timing. I have a slight idea how this is done but want to make sure on an a4. Would somone explain to me on how it's done or send a link. I couldn't find one on the forums.

I finally was able to get the crank to turn over. It just went like something broke. So Im thinking it was hung up on a valve and I eather broke or bent the valve when I got the crank to turn. I turned the crank over multiple times. So then I started the car and it ran but their was a loud noise coming from the head like a valve was slightly hitting. I noticed the cam and crank pulley where not aligned with the timing marks on the covers. I then took the timing belt off and I aligned the cam pulley to the arrow and the crank mark to the arrow. http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/327828-B7-A4-Timing-Belt-Change?highlight=timing%20belt When I turn the crank it hits the valves. So yes when the crank and cam are aligned at the marks. The pistons hit a valve. What does this mean? That is the right way to set the timing correct? You align the cam and crank mark to the aligning marks?

There could also be an issue with the timing chain. That would cause the cams to be out of time with each other.

If you don't know enough about it to figure out what is broken, you should probably just bring it somewhere.

Well I decided to start breaking the head down. I realized that the valves aren't all closed at top dead center. The intake valves seem to be out of sink explaining that the timing chain may have skipped. I just hope the teeth aren't worn or tore up. Also I'm tired of the banjo bolt setup for the fuel pump. Decided I will buy the fitting and the line from an 08 a4 using the fuel hose. Did it on a friends car so ill definitely be posting pictures if any one wants.

Why on earth would you assume that the valves would ALL be closed at TDC???
Unless I'm missing something about this motor, the #1 cylinder would be closed. Not sure about the others.

Seriously man, I'm going to be 100% honest with you....
Stop Fucking with your car.. You are very enthusiastic about the DIY and working on it yourself...
But I can tell you that the money you are going to spend trying to Fix damage caused by YOU, will far surpass the money I spent on a legitimate automotive degree and certifications.
If you really want to convince us you have a grasp on "wrenching", admit you are in over your head and let a shop sort out the complete build.
It isn't rocket science to bolt up a turbo, most turbos are nothing more than what I would consider "bolt on"... But clearly you lack the understanding that goes beyond that.
The theory, the science behind the mechanical and what makes them all work together.
Your lack of understanding the tuning process, and engine timing and many other threads that show us just how in the dark you really are..

Btw, despite what I said above about how your handling the response, these guys are are right. You really should go to a shop.
Hell, I ended up going to a shop after doing my brakes because I was having issues getting a clean bleed afterwords and had them bleed it. IMO, going to a shop when you are having troubles or are in over your head is nothing to be ashamed of.
