finally time to make my own build thread. for those of you know that don't know me, i'm Jim or Jsandor91 on here. Currently majoring in computer science at Rutgers University so on a college modding budget lol. My dream was to get a EVO X hence the picture below lol, but it was a bit unpractical and the parents didn't want it on their insurance lol.

Since then I've been the proud owner of a Quartz Grey B7 Quattro 6mt for almost two years now and have slowly been building and making the car mine since then.
my credentials for my car were awd turbo and manual and the audi was a great fit for me like a tamed more classy and much slower evo.
so first a quick history with plenty of pictures.
Spring 2011
Brought it home super stock and 4x4 status.
and fulfilled rule #22 before it was even asked lol.

Sounding good!!
Looking forward to the build! I would advise you to build the engine first though, once you've got te gtx on you're going to want to turn it up and it only takes once mistake to blow your engine.

Except when you over boost and it destroys the engjne!
Lol jk but maybe I would always go for safety first then add the power, plus you will be able to break in your engine easier with a k03 than the gtx.

The problem is I don't know how mild or extreme of a engine build I want to do at this point so I could end up just doing rods or going balls to the walls lol.

Definitely build your head. I was on the fence about it, here's the thing wit the gtx, you start spooling at 2500, but it's very low boost, you can hit Max boost around 35-3700, you redline at 6800, that gives you 3100 rpms to play with, but once you've hit peak boost the speedometer moves to redline in the blink of an eye, you definitely want to have more room to shift and go into higher rpms! Plus it will get you to 60 faster so you can brag to all your friends ;)

rods + head are so important for BT. our pistons are forged and should be good, but at that point you might as well go all out since your motor is open anyway.
DEFINITELY be careful about just slapping on the turbo. problem is that the GTX's wastegate only goes down to like 14 psi which is already putting you in your power range: by that i mean if you floor it, you pretty much are guaranteed to throw a rod

I can help tune your boost to keep you from boost spiking and ruining your engine. I think RAI still keeps the base map duty shape that Eurodyne supplies; it can indeed spike hard with that map and you don't want to use it. Actually not sure why Eurodyne still uses it. The map shape I use started from me learning to keep an S3 K04 from boost spiking (took me over 50 revisions) which was a task for sure, but in the end I figured out how to keep the boost nice and smooth. if anyone want the map, let me know and I will email it to you. Then just take logs and fine tune it for your setup. Or for a small fee I can help do it remotely for you.

Turbo should usually be the last thing you order, garrett only has a 1 yr warranty, so if you're build doesn't get finished until 7-8 months you will not have much warranty. Though garrett is usually pretty good, its just a good idea to have more margin for error.

my next project is to get a MAF and MAF housing, reinstall it, and start tuning from scratch. I would love to check out your maps as i've been messing around quite a bit and feel like i'm getting somewhere. unfortunately i haz no monies to pay you for it though (because if i did i would probably take it down the street to get dyno tuned hahaha)

would definitely recommend S3 injectors over RS4 injectors

you are most likely going to have problems with Maestro + RS4 injectors on cold starts are nearly all of us have. Maestro doesnt currently let you tune out the cold start issues right now.
I havent been up in Burlington lately but If i am i will drop you a PM and let you check out the EFR and the cold start issues im talking about.

ya, rs4 will always have some issues, but you can definitely make it better. If you are not shy about me checking out your file, shoot me over your maestro file and i will take a quick peak.

Things are looking good!!!!
is that the 2867 on an atp log manifold? lol embarrassing I can't recognize my own turbo. doesn't look like the wastegate bracket is the gtx, looks like a gt28, but it doesn't have double blades like a gt...
I suppose the gt wastegate could just be mounted, would make more sense because of the blades.

There are 11 individual compressor blades on the gtx, all long. Regular gt's have dual blades

I would like to do that but with nj inspections I'm going to have a hard enough time passing with my test pipe . had a friend who had a filter on his cc and a tp but he failed for it being vented even at a private shop.

Hmmm. I have never had to go through SMOG checks. Do they put a sniffer on the exhaust and do a visual of the engine bay?
Eric

05-01-2013, 07:15 AM
They do visual and there supposed to do sniffer but everyone has a guy that will look past things to a degree but vented catch cans are a no go
I can get a heat shield to cover my test pipe and most don't know where the cat is supposed to be on our cars.

i would still vent to atmosphere and then when the time comes plug the hole and go get inspected. are NJ emissions centers state run? In VA any garage with the tools and certification can do it... slipped my dude a 20 after he looked under the hood, back at me, under the hood again, and then back at me and said uhhhh what is this.
he didn't even do the rest of the test lol just signed me off for everything and i was on my way [up]

I just sold a Jeep this last weekend to a friend in San Fransico which has stringent inspections. The PCV system on the liberty is a two part system with separate ventalation for each valve cover and a separate vent for the crank. The whole system was failing. So I cut out the OEM PCV crank valve and routed new lines. Then for the valves cover vents, I tore out the old system and routed new 5/8" radiator hose to vent to the right front wheel well. If you look under the hood it looks stock, but I am venting to atmo in stealth. :)
jsandor91
05-01-2013, 07:51 AM
I have a valve cover adaptor from arjun. So if I can find a way to make it stealthy and plug it when it comes time for inspection I'd do it . otherwise I'll go catch can and vent it most of the time

05-01-2013, 08:26 AM
yeah it should be easy enough to swap the a/n lines, you can definitely just get a plug for the other side, i don't think anyone will give you trouble even though it is clear you are hiding something, shouldn't matter since the system is to code during the test
jsandor91
05-01-2013, 08:44 AM
you or epy will have to draw me a diagram so i dont f anything up lol.
i hate all this pcv, catch can, emissions, carbon buildup bs
drumnjuny
05-01-2013, 09:55 AM
haha at first i was worried too, until i realized everything was just connected and irrelevant of flow... and i started just closing connections until i only had two; crankcase and VC breathers and threw them into opposite sides of my catch can. i can definitely find u a picture of my setup, if you want, which i think is pretty ideal and basically the same as EPY except that i retain the drainage in the catch can
that being said its definitely an unfortunate stock system. glad there are good solutions for getting rid of it, especially the line that feeds oil back into the turbo..... never understood the purpose of that one?
there are two sides to the PCV system.
1. rear side(exhaust side) uses turbo boost as vaccuum to suck pressure out of the head and into the intake tract. This will be eliminated when you go BT, there is no where to connect those hoses that used to connect tothe k03, so if you get a different valve cover you are set, otherwise you need to plug up those two nipples on the exhaust side of the VC.
2. Front side (intake side) uses manifold vaccuum generated by teh pistons to suck in oil vapor to be combusted. If you've removed the stock PCV circle unit that bolts to the VC then you already got rid of it, so basically what you would have now is one line that goes from the valve cover down to the oil filter housing. This is strictly just an air/oil separator now, but you will want to VTA by some means, after all it's much easier to blow out seals on a BT than it is on a stock car, 30 psi on a gt30 is no joke. Some guys run a vented catch can between both lines, or some guys run the 1.8t VTA nipple, it's totally personal preference.
drumnjuny
05-01-2013, 10:15 AM
FWIW you don't really need to plug the rear, you can just leave them there or screen them off or throw a filter on there it doesn't really matter.
martin what's VTA?

I'm trying to decide what way to go with a custom exhaust and just checked out your video with the spintech mufflers. Those sound damn good man. Can't tell from the video, but did you have any tips installed?
jsandor91

funny story, still have no muffler tips because when i got it done i wanted to go quad tip but had no s4 valence .
now i have a s4 valence but i need to have my mufflers moved in a bit to fit so i still have no mufflers tips.
i have a video at home of my go pro mounted to the rear bumper ill try to upload it soon for you to hear.

spintech sells tips i believe but they are so expensive.
these are probably the deepest i've heard on a fsi motor
actually gotten ask if it was a v8 a couple times by people who weren't familiar with audis
the drone is pretty noticeable especially if you go 3 inch with no resonators like me. becuz racecar [race]

Same idea just smaller individual pipes on the muffler
I'm gonna wait till I get my turbo and what not before I mess with it because I'm sure the new turbo, dv , fmic and intake will make a significant difference.
Stupid question but bigger turbo more vaccum when cruising . less drone ?

turbo should finally be going on soon. trying to figure out my catch can situation at the moment.

yeah that is so weird. I've been pretty shocked at the differences between different turbos of the same model, almost seems like they have different hot sides!!
btw if u have a GTX28 and want to go bigger on power i have the larger turbine housing (.86 vs .63 A/R or something like that) :) been sitting around for a year. just realized i should hit up the other people going with the GTX28

I second this. I put my file back down to 24 psi since I don't have lpfp figured out but even when I was at 22 psi, it's a rod bender for sure, it builds so hard, you hit three thousand rpms, mash the accelerator pedal and there's no stoping, just full on commit til 7000 rpms

drumnjuny
09-08-2013, 02:30 PM
honestly after 26 it just feels the same for longer in the powerband going up to 30. but 34 wasn't fun at all. big turbine was lamezor... low end power is way more fun. if i did it over again i wouldn't go down to the 63 cuz the powerband is perfect for me. I don't like to put that much pressure into the motor low in the RPMs when there's a long time spent at TDC and i don't like running the motor in the skies cuz honestly every time i was at 8k the motor was screaming and you just think "this is the time it blows apart"
another 4-6 months i'll be ready to turn the boost up again. i mean i'm on a tune that runs 22psi fine, i have a like 3 26 psi tunes that run fine w/ and w/o water meth... and i ahve a 30 psi tune i could throw on there i guess today if i wanted to lol. just easier to diagnose w/o any boost control (wastegate pressure) and fun to romp on it all the time without worrying about it. plus with how fucked up my brakes are 16 psi is enough to get into trouble.

Looks awesome! Question: why is your dv next to the throttle body? I thought the whole point of the dv was to relieve pressure from causing surging at the compressor wheel, but this setup seems like it wouldn't protect as well since its not as direct. What are the advantages?

there is a benefit. think about this: when you let off the throttle, the throttle body closes, but the turbo is still blowing air. that pressure has to go somewhere, hence the dv or BOV. The closing throttle plate causes a shockwave through all that pressurized air. this is the shock wave that will cause surging or dv flutter with a bad dv, and can kill turbos. with the dv on the hot side (and in our case, right on the turbo), that shockwave travels through the whole system before the pressure is released. Having the dv on the cold side, that shock wave of pressure travels a shorter distance, and the whole system works a little more efficiently.

OK for my kit the inlet elbow has 4 ports on it . one for dv . one for rear pcv. One for n75 . one for n80. Kloeb was nice enough to get all the hose sizes for me and I can post them up if you need . I'm gonna be doing a pcv delete but leaving the hose to the turbo inlet in . I can also take measurements so you don't buy a lot of extra hose like I did lol .
I believe epy said his inlet had only 3 ports. I could be wrong thou .
If you or anyone is interested in doing the dv relocation . siliconeintakes.com makes a pipe just for that for like $25 bucks .
Hope this clears some things up if not don't hesitate to ask !

K few questions then. the relocation DV, do you need the T coupling that goes on the cold side to attach the DV to the cold side intercooler piping?
and the intake pipe I believe I saw the photos of his pipe and yes im sure it had 3 ports. so I just need to hook up everything kinda similar to stock locations. the OEM VC to Turbo intake pipe most are replacing with heater hose I assume and 5/8" is what it looks like. if you don't mind pm the the lengths and sizes that will be one more thing I can grab this week to minimize me running around when I get the turbo to Canada!!
Or if you could take a pic of that DV relocation setup on the cold side id like to see what its all about!! looks pretty straight forward!

use this pipe get a 1.25 to 1 inch silicone reducer . two clamps.
1 x BOV T-Pipe with 1" BOV T - 2.5" (SSB000458) = $24.99
1 x Silicone Reducer, 1.25" to 1.0" - Black (SIL000127) = $9.99
3 x 8mm Black Silicone Boost/Vacuum Hose Per Ft. (VAC000306) = $4.47
7 x 6mm Red Silicone Boost/Vacuum Hose Per Ft. (VAC000336) = $10.43
i had a little extra 8mm black hose and maybe two foot extra 6mm hose. dependings on how you do the n75 i got more to be safe. the small clamps you can just pick up at walmart they have like a 4 pack for $2.50
sounds like you will have to delete / plug the rear pcv port if you inlet only has 3 ports.

Did you feel that your intercooler wasn't cooling enough on its own? I've been hearing lots about these intercooler sprayer kits, but wouldn't you have better results just misting inside the intake piping, that way water is not conducted through metal to cool but cools air directly?
Ooh you know what would be cool, is running some kind of nitrogen setup to most the intercooler, would probably be expensive but it would be ice cold!

that would be very cool no pun inteneded... with the ability to spray while not in boost i would be worried that the nozzles would cause puddling in the intake piping since it is not high pressure at all. my intercooler seems to be fine its rated to 480hp i think my ghetto intake is what's really hurting me.

common rail high pressure a few times i spiked to 140 bar when i only have a 135 bar prv. according to epy the hpfp upgrade valve cannot dump pressure fast enough for when it spikes
aluthman

Hmmm, so what's the solution for this? I've got the HPFPupgrade 145 bar PRV and I've seen spikes to 140bar or so before. I've never had a fault code from it though.

because i'm spiking more then the prv is rated for so i throw a code. since you have a 145 bar prv you have not exceeded it by hitting 140
epy altered my tune so i shouldn't spike more then 125 which should keep me from throwing a code.

I think the thing that Adam is getting at is that the PRV has no sensors, so the ECU does not know what the PRV rating is....usually this kind of thing is due to the tune.

hmm. i was under the assumption the the cracking of the prv was causing the cel because it cracks to keep pressure from getting to high.
"The 145 bar PRV will compliment any tune that has a requested 125 to 135 bar." according to hpfpupgrade so i thought to high of pressure leads to high pressure cel no?

Well one thing that may be happening is that your PRV is designed to crack at 135 Bar, while it cracks, it may be that the ECU is still requesting fuel, so pressure builds to 135, prv cracks but is not open sufficiently so for a split second you see pressure go to 140 Bar. But then this would be an issue with the tuning. In this instance it is not the PRV relaying info but it would be the fuel rail sensor saying "ECU, you asked for 135, but i'm getting 140, I can't keep up with draining all this fuel" so then you would just remove a bit of fuel from the parts where you see spiking.

turns on my low pressure side of things are acting funny. on several 2nd gear pulls i experienced fuel pressures as low as 2bar at redline and as high as 3.5bar. considering wiring my bmp+ to see if its the controller or the pump on its way out.

did you wire the BMP to the LPFP?

the BMP is only activated at WOT so i'm not sure that would help you, if you wire it up make sure you wire a switch in that way you can compare the two runs at least

Don't do it....lol the stock pump is the best option we have. DW-300 makes your gas gauge all funky because you can only use half of your tank, and its just not as nice as the stock unit. Definitely roll with the stocker

hmm. i'm afraid like the cam follower when running it at much higher then stock levels won't it continue to wear prematurely ?

There's not really enough evidence yet to be able to tell what the reasonable lifespan is at regular load and what it would be at a higher load. From what I understand, the lpfp controller is what can fry, it is generally what goes out as opposed to the pump.
my 2c, but the day my oem pump goes out, another oem one is going right back in, I don't want to deal with finicky gas gauges and having half of my usual range.

when you hit wot it puts voltage through the lines, when you aren't in wot it doesn't. mine was set to 90% i think? you're controlling it as though it is a solenoid if i'm not mistaken... so its either on or off. and my map was 99% duty everywhere because its only shooting voltage at WOT

ahh ok, when I had taken a look at it I had only seen the map that looks identical to the methanol map, and so I figured it was something that controlled always, but then you run into the issue that if the ECU never requests 90% you will never have the bmp working?

shane would be the person to ask. he had wired his BMP but tbh i don't think he ever actually tuned for it or used the map.

has anyone done the ttrs lpfp or is it mostly speculation? as far as i can tell there are only two lpfp options that are there, one being with usp which is too expensive, and the other being consistently flawed. for the most part no one really exceeds the stock pump, so i am finding it hard to see any alternatives to oem. Are there any others?

Dw300 is also an option. EPY i think has the TTRS pump, but he Frankensteined it into a double pump setup. Most people are ok by using the RS4 pump controller and the stock pump.

Even more so when it is rotational mass! Lightweight rotors, Flywheel, and crank pulleys make a bigger difference than people realize.
Have you ever sprinted with shoes on, and then sprinted again without shoes? Same sort of effect!
Unfortunately not because the welded washers on the bottom of those RS4 pressure plates will not work with our flywheel. It will require a completely unmodified pressure plate. The disc should work though!

That is because you were thinking of REAL flywheel chatter.
I put the "" around chatter because the Audi community distinguishes chatter as the noise that gets transferred through a solid flywheel since there is no rubber or plastic to absorb it.
The Audi Owner version of chatter cannot be changed because of how deep it has gotten within the community. So I just roll with calling it "chatter" since I know they are referring to the noise and it would take too much time to explain to them that its not chatter when they will reply with "but this is what everyone says chatter is on the internetz"

Haha you do not have real chatter. If you have what the Audi Community considers chatter you would never know because your exhaust is too loud.
work it closer? as in smaller gap? I thought bigger gap was better?
Yeah, smaller gap. More boost = more compression. More compression makes it harder for your spark to jump the gap so it needs to be tighter to keep from overworking your coil packs.
Also, the leaner it is the harder it is for the spark to jump gaps as well!

Jake@JHM

under any circumstances do you recommend running two steps colder from stock? so ngk 9's
Yeah high boost applications go for it. I just haven't seen a build on a 2.0T that would really call for a plug that cold. Since the heat range on a spark plug only indicates the plugs ability to dissipate heat, if you have too hot of a plug with too high of compression the plug will be retaining so much heat that it will detonate the charge before the spark plug even ignites. This is exactly how a diesel engine works.
The higher the compression - the colder the plug needed.
More boost = more compression.

Did another test cruised at 40mph outside temp 68 intake air temp close to 80. However at 70mph I was only see temps around 72-74. And barely went up after a second gear pull

love them personally. my exhaust video on youtube should give you a idea of how they sound.
imo they are some of the deepest sounding mufflers for a 2.0 fsi . i got alot of compliments and people asking me what exhaust i had.
i don't have ressonators so they drone pretty bad but ill be getting a a synapse no drone soon hopefully.

Synapse resonators? I thought they make DV/BOV's? Also while we are on this note, how do you work launch control?
step 1: Go to maestro and click the button, set RPM's to 4000.
step 2: Flash.
step 3: Profit
step 4:????
step 5: Activates by itself in the car?

i think its just, when the clutch is floored and you're stopped and in first, and then u floor the gas, it will stop at the assigned rpm right?
huh....that seems way too simple, like something that I would totally fall into while just driving sometime.

Synapse makes a branch resonator in all different sizes !
And what arjun said . you have to be stopped

Wow just looked it up, That is awesome, I hope they are a decent price....that would be really cool, I'm surprised no one has made these in mass quantities before, its a genius idea.

They are like 40-70 . I want one but not enough to pay like 300 to make one .

thats a crazy good price

wow i will buy one at that price.... maybe. my exhaust sounds pretty good actually but a branch resonator would allow me to fine tune the slight drone that i do have, to a little lower/higher RPMs.
then again exhaust and frequencies are so foreign to me, might be best to just leave it how it is.

You're exhaust is perfect, I wouldn't add one. I'm still so blown away by how much difference there is in exhausts.

Is it just me, or is jsandor the only BT car that is currently being enjoyed? (that was not a complete kit from a company) Not to mention he is still on stock rods!

^^ yup. BT cars weren't meant to be enjoyed Jake!! get with the program haha...
in all seriousness if i hadn't just destroyed one of my wheels... my car would be "done" right now. only needs a few more things and i will be on to the enjoyment part... although TBH i already have been enjoying driving this thing hard for the past two months or so. replacing the hubs, wheel bearings, and control arms did wonders!! Can't wait to get my summer tires back on and finish this bitch.

i take that as a compliment thanks jake [up]
she has almost 10k on her since i went bt and haven't had any real problems except i had the night from hell on sunday
driving home from visiting the gf at yale which is approx 160 miles from me. its 2am empty road, i see halos approaching me pretty quickly.
its a e39 540i with dinan badges and a hell of the a supercharger whine. we slow down to 50 to do a pull first pull i put a couple cars on him.
we slow down and go again from 40 this time, i only get a about a car on him car is feeling sluggish still seeing decent psi. and i hear a loud pop intercooler pipe popped off car shut off coasted off the road.
long story short had the right size wrench for the clamp but it was near impossible to get to with the bumper on as it was the piece between the turbo outlet and fmic hot side.
its secure now but still gonna order a new coupler for good measure .

No problem[up]
You like to race a lot. You need to keep a go pro with you at all times to capture these races! That way you can bring back hope for the B7 community because everyone things the 2.0T is a slow car.

its not so much that i like to race but when people hear the loudness, the wide and low wheels etc. they start with me and if conditions are ideal ( no traffic, open road, clear weather) why not have some fun.
my suction cup mount broke so i will need to get a new one but as soon as i do ill keep it in my car for such a occasion.
i think your proving to everyone that a properly tuned bolt on k03 isn't a slow car either. low 13's is what alot of performance 6 and 8 cyl are making from the factory

Hold the camera with your mouth if you have too!
Haha thanks [up]. My car was quicker than most of the WRX/EVOs that were at the track too! People seeing a B7 go up against a known quick car like a supercharged BMW gains excitement and motivation!
