Currently I own a 2006 A4 2.0T I bought it in Feburary and this being my first Audi have absolutly fell in love with it. It is quick and fun to drive...but being a life long car guy it makes me want a little better. So here is my question that I need some help with...

Do I keep the A4 and put some mods on it (chip, exhaust, etc) to give it more power...Or do I just buy a used A4?

I have been going back and forth back and forth and it is driving me NUTS!!! Any advice would be much appreciated!!!!!!

Good point about the S4. I am looking at either a B6 or B7 S4.

I was in a similar situation, do i make the switch to a S4?

After thinking about it, i came to the conclusion to stay away. The reason why i stayed away is due to resale value primarily effected by fuel economy. No doubt about it, the S4 is a gorgeous car and has oodles of power. However, if you evaluate the prices B6's (~04/05), they are in the mid 20's w/ < 50k miles. Of course you find the rare deal of a few less than mid-20's but the condition might be so-so.

For my circumstance, I didnt plan to keep it for greater than 2 yrs. That being said, find the car that you want to buy and for a quick comparison look at one 2 yrs older. For example: 2006 S4 w/ 25k miles, look at a 2004 S4 w/ ~25-40k miles. That is probably what your car will be worth in 2 yrs. Most vehicles are a tough sell in this market, especially any w/ a V8 in my honest opinion. Hence the new engines coming/arrived w/ turbo's/superchargers to reduce on displacement.

So, if you plan to keep it forever and dont really care about resale value then buy buy buy. If you do, try to find a very very clean one for a great price (of course, this is everyone's goal).

Goodluck with your search!

It all depends on what you are looking for in a car.

If you want some more power and don't care about the gas, then get the S4. If you're worried about gas, keep the A4 and just put some mods on it.

This is the only reason to get an S4 IMO...

Otherwise it handles no better then a sport package A4 and gets 10mpg.

cheers! Mike

im guessing that you dont have the s-line. buying an s4 at this point would be a waste and youd lose out. at least buy a chip and then maybe an rs4 sway bar and then decide if you really need much more than that. chances are, you dont. And if you do, id save my money for something bigger and better down the road....

I was in the same situation. I had an 07 A4 that was coming off lease and I wanted to do a little more modifications for my next car. I always admired the S4 and my 8 year old son was pestering me to get one, but I wanted to keep the B7 body style this time with an Avant and those were quite expensive since I was buying this car.... After much deliberation, I decided on a 06 S-line 2.0 Avant. With the money I saved, I've moded the hell out of it, still saved thousands and have no regrets but one.... The way the S4 sounds with a sport exhaust as in the previous post with links to utube. The sound is so bad ass!!!!

I went from a B6 S4 (had it 3.5 years) to a B7 A4 2.0T 6mt. I had Milltek full exhaust, H-sport sways, and Stoptech brakes on the S4. I spent at least 25 track days with the S4. With the money I saved getting an A4 (as opposed to another S4), I purchased an Ohlins SL suspension and I have to say that this car handles much better then the S4 and was still much cheaper (even with mods). I can drive the piss out of this car and still get 22mpg where the S4 would be about 14mpg when driven the same way. When I baby this car I get about 31mpg and the most I ever got with the S4 was 18mpg. With a good launch and chip, the 2.0T is not much slower then the S4 to 60. After 60 there is no competition - the S4 just pulled and pulled. There is also more torque out of a corner with the S4. Given all that, I would have to flip a coin to decide which one I would want. I was happy with the S4 and now happy wth the A4. The money saved on a A4 over an S4 can buy a lot of mods. Oh, and don't think you will buy an S4 and not mod it - the stock exhaust is so quiet you will need an exhaust (and not just a cat-back). Figure about 2k for full exhaust on an S4.
