I was in a similar situation, do i make the switch to a S4?
After thinking about it, i came to the conclusion to stay away. The reason why i stayed away is due to resale value primarily effected by fuel economy. No doubt about it, the S4 is a gorgeous car and has oodles of power. However, if you evaluate the prices B6's (~04/05), they are in the mid 20's w/ < 50k miles. Of course you find the rare deal of a few less than mid-20's but the condition might be so-so.
For my circumstance, I didnt plan to keep it for greater than 2 yrs. That being said, find the car that you want to buy and for a quick comparison look at one 2 yrs older. For example: 2006 S4 w/ 25k miles, look at a 2004 S4 w/ ~25-40k miles. That is probably what your car will be worth in 2 yrs. Most vehicles are a tough sell in this market, especially any w/ a V8 in my honest opinion. Hence the new engines coming/arrived w/ turbo's/superchargers to reduce on displacement.
So, if you plan to keep it forever and dont really care about resale value then buy buy buy. If you do, try to find a very very clean one for a great price (of course, this is everyone's goal).
Goodluck with your search!
