Here's my install on the old B5:

http://www.audizine.com/gallery/data/500/iPod-in-Car-021b.jpg

Now I am installing on my B7 S4.
Before:

After:

http://www.audizine.com/gallery/data/500/Ipod_S4_Birdseye.jpg

The cradle connects directly to the CD Changer cable, thereby replacing your CD Changer. Control is accessed through the CD Changer controls on the NAV/Radio. I reinstalled the CD Changer just to fill in the space for the OEM look when you open the glovebox.

I routed the cable up to the CF trim and tucked it behind. Then I ran it over the CD changer in the gap between the Changer and the surrounding:
http://www.audizine.com/gallery/data/500/P6080349.jpg
The glovebox opens and closes with no hassle and wires to get in the way.

This is the cable I used which can be purchased here (http://enfigcarstereo.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/DICE_I_VW_T.html):
http://enfigcarstereo.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/media/DICE_I_VW_T.jpg

The cradle is also a DICE unit:
http://enfigcarstereo.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/media/DICE_CRADEL.jpg

As for mounting plate I chose the PROCLIP angled mount at http://ww.proclipusa.com I don't have to remove the radio to install it, and it doesn't require drilling.

Price breakdown:
not including shipping and tax, rounded off
DICE wiring kit: $145
DICE cradle: $54
Proclip Mounting plate: $35

TOTAL: ~$234.00

What I like best is that there is only ONE wire, so clutter is minimal. Also, when I have to put my ipod away out of sight when I park the car, all I have to do is lift it off the cradle. On my old setup in the B5, I had to take it out of the cradle, then pinch the connector (much like the Apple USB cable). The cable was then left dangling. With this setup there is no dangling cable, and when I get back into the car, all I have to do is drop the ipod into the cradle... I no longer have to connect the cable. It's all one step. Sounds like a small thing, but after years of use, the convenience is appreciated.

One thing I don't like about the DICE mount as it has the logo. Anyone know if the logo can be removed easily?

EDIT - MORE PICS!!

EDIT 04/18/2009 - iPhone hook-up added:

The DICE now has a 5V cable for charging the iPhone 3G. I installed it a few months ago but never got a pic:
http://www.audizine.com/gallery/data/500/S4_iphone_01-01.jpg

The iPhone charges and plays thorough the DICE dock. All audio, including alerts, apps, games, and even Pandora (not to mention the iPod app) play through the stereo. Receiving calls acts the same way thought the audi bluetooth. The song/app pauses and the call rings through the speakers. When your call is done, songs resume playback where they left off. Very convenient. Sound quality is flawless with no hissing or feedback, just like the iPod, but I am a little dissapointed with Pandora through no fault of the DICE unit. Pandora audio is compressed so that it can stream easily through both edge and 3G, so quality isn't as clear as the iPod app.

I also use a Griffen FORM case which has a bottom that slides off easily for full port access. I just take off the bottom and slide it onto the DICE unit.

Added bonus of mounting the iPhone by the radio is easy use of the Google Maps app. We all know that it's somewhat of a chore to find a location in the Audi NAV system if you don't have an exact address. The Google Map app solves all of this and is much faster/easier in inputting a location. Also, it's like having 2 NAVs in the car, although Google Maps doesn't have true turn-by-turn directions.

Note: The 5V cable is available separately for $40 if you want to upgrade your old DICE unit, but comes with all new kits. Just make sure it says 5V and it will charge your iPhone.

I ordered the DICE adapter for my Nav unit and now I'm looking to mount it somewhere. I don't like the DICE mount as it has the logo. Anyone know if the logo can be removed easily?

Hmm, acetone?

I've always wanted to turn my ashtray into a mount and adapt one of those Dice units for connection, although I think it may just be too hard to effectively control the ipod, when it's so out of visibility. Another idea would be to somehow splice the hardwire that runs to your headunit and extend a connection cord, such as the usb one supplied with your ipod for your mac/pc connection, to under the center console into the cupholders under your armrest, this way you still have easy reach to ipod, while it's hardwired, providing digital signal, and somewhat hidden away..

I wonder if anyone has a similar setup...

Check out http://www.proclipusa.com

They are really simple mounts that you can attach anything to, and run the dice wire right into your iPod. I saw a few pics of peole with this this set up for their nav units as well and its pretty clean.

Awesome! Thanks, their prices seem very reasonable too. I'll definitely be giving them a call on Tuesday, after memorial day. Between all the different cables, adapters, etc, that they have, they should definitely be able to provide me with what I'll need to make this happen.

Hopefully I'll be hardwiring the audio/power connections to my iPod, if they have everything needed, to the cupholders underneath the armrest by the end of the week. [:)]

I have the same unit...without the dock. I had them run the wire into my armrest so the Ipod is always hidden from view. I operate it via the steering wheel, but can always open the armrest if I need to operate the Ipod itself.

They could run the cable through the joint hardware of the armrest? I thought it was a solid plastic peice. Did they have to cut/drill anything?

I poked around for a sec, and was able to find a bracket that seems pretty universal; looks like it has no holes on it so you can use the suction mounts. ProClip for B7 S4 (http://www.proclipusa.com/?sectionpath=144&pageid=8202&processor=content&pcategoryid=12885&categoryid=17076&year=2007&p_origin=144&p_sectionid=144&p_pageid=8901&p_processor=asp&p_asp_processor=product&p_action=proclipcategorysearch&p_ppagecategoryid=13872&p_pagecategoryid=14172&p_pcategoryid=12885&p_categoryid=17076&p_sitecategoryid=&p_year=2007&p_countryid=0&p_leftorright=) EDIT: it may land on a page that asks what country you're in, but for me, as soon as I choose "United States" and click ok, it takes you to the actual bracket.

This isn't an iPod mount, but it's the exact location of the one above. Actually, my Sirius-player bracket pictured below is also very universal; it just has sets of holes on the back that align with a number of Sirius players' car docks. You can find this one w/ the holes at http://www.tss-radio.com, and then scroll down and look in the left listing towards the bottom for "Vehicle Specific Mounts" - from there, you choose your car make, model and year:

I was thinking of doing that too. I wonder if you could drill holes on the back of the tray so that the wires are never seen. That would be sick cause you can even use your apple remote if you wanted to. What ipod adapter do you have? The Blitzsafe I was using in my B5 didn't work with the apple dock USB connector for some reason. Also why do you have 2 wires? Are you using the line out instead of the dock connector?

for some reason i couldnt use the dock to plug in the back. it just didnt work when plugged in. so i took the white shell of the medal dock trimmed it to the width of the fray and too some 3m window weld to glue it in place. cut a slot through the bottom. and then ran my peripheral adapter line as seen and would plug it in through the bottom. peripheral was the only adapter out at the time. i installed it within the first week or two after i got my car one of the first 06 cars. i also just put a screw in the side of the tray as a stop so it wouldnt come out all the way it comes out maybe an inch and a half or two it does work pretty well at also looks nice i think. I no longer use this because i have a clarion double din nav unit so my ipod just stays in my glove box.

I drilled a small hole in the back of the armrest's interior on the driver's side and routed the cable for my Icelink plus through it, placing the actual interface inside the center console next to the shifter. I usually put my iPhone on a playlist I want to listen to and then use the steering wheel/radio controls to advance songs when necessary. If I need to, I can pull the phone out of the center console and close the lid on the cable and use the phone to change tracks. I like that I have the ability to hide the phone out of sight when I need to without losing the ability to control playback. I can post pictures if you want, but I imagine you all get the idea...

ECS tuning has them. However, youd be better off getting the
Dice Electronics unit so you can still use the iPod controls and get better sound.

Well I don't use my ipod Classic anywhere else but my car. I have a Nano for on the go... so it actually never leaves the car, so the only chance it gets to charge is while it's playing in my car. That means I would need an AUX and a power wire... why plug it in twice if I can plug it in once? Also AUX inputs suck because it's not a true line out, in other words if you turn the volume on your ipod all the way up, then it makes the music sound like crap. Volume is controlled by the radio, not the ipod, like it should be. One wire is cleaner and more convenient. My setup on my B5 never needed charging... it also put the ipod on pause and charged it for 15 minutes after I shut the engine off to make sure it keeps charged. Also with the DICE it will pause the ipod when you have a phone call coming in... can't do any of that with an AUX port can you? Also with a usb port more headunits can control and display ipod/zune/mp3 player contents.

JMG, Does your DICE setup use the CD changer port? From wht I've read so far, you either can have a 6 CD changer or the iPod setup, but not both. I personally hate the fact that our RNS-E can't display song names and can only have 5 playlist for the iPod. I wish there's a better setup. I want to go with the AUX setup so I can still have my 6 CD changer that comes with my car. But the downside of that is like you said. It won't charge the Ipod.

The DICE that I installed disables the CD Changer, but there is no limit to how many playlists you can access. the icelink Gateway 400 (http://enfigcarstereo.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/DENSION_GW4RVW6001.html) allows you to keep the CD Changer according to http://www.enfig.com

Hey kids, this is the official announcement from Paragon that Audi has finally realized that the Ipod integration in there CAN cars sucks, and yes the company that built the dock integration for the MOST cars is producing docks and integration for the CAN's. No release dates available, although Audi does already show retro kits for a host of vehicles for Ipod docks in the glove box, though no part numbers that are in the database are available.

For those of us that are going with the DLO homedock option for video and complete Ipod control it will be bittersweet, but a true integration you don't have to build yourself is nice.

"- Besides value 0xxxx5x (for AUX in) and 0xxxx6x as seen in the EU 0650 software there is now a 0xxxx7x, 0xxxx8x and 0xxxx9x possible which leaves the option for a few additional components that we don't of yet have."[wrench][wrench]

Mine is stealth, stays in glove box most of the time, unless I'm working out. Recycled the iPod classic box, too, as make-shift cradle. The box is very durable. Used Scotch/3M 'Indoor / Outdoor' double sided tape to anchor it all - it's the red stuff and is incredibly strong . Used one screw on the Dice, too. You can see it in the bottom photo. Lined the iPod box with 'egg crate' packing material. Ipod slides in and out of the box easily but there is enough friction from the egg crate material to hold it firmly in place....

I'm going to bump this thread for Joe. Dice has stopped selling that unit and now has an updated unit (named G2) that official AZ advertiser Enfig Car Stereo sells (at a nice discount too!). It works even better and the cradle is much stronger than the previous one. It works with the old "box" that JMG has in his system. Check out enfig's site for more details:

Does the Dice iPod interface for the RNS-E navigate similar to the SD card slots? Or is it completely different?

It will act as an external Cd changer, the best interface for b6's and b7's is the Dension

Can anyone say how the ProClip mount is holding up? I see in the instructions it just sticks on and I'm worried about it ruining the dash or falling off on a hot day. [:/]

Also, check out this link for a concise list of Dension options/solutions. Prices seem pretty reasonable as well.

Huh? Did you look at the website? I am pretty sure it shows how it looks mounted right? I have had it for 3+ years. It never fell off. I am talking about the proclip center vent mount by the way. I should have pics of it in my profile. I have the wires hidden now though. Its holding a tomtom. I can also attach my iphone to it too, cause I have a universal cell phone mount that can be put on the proclip center vent mount too.

As far as ruining dash? I never took it off to see any scratches. LOL. You are suppose to use that wedge though so you dont damage anything.

The mount I have hasn't budged in all these years. It's not the vent mount but the one that mounts next to the nav. You can see the pics in the first post.

Yeah I saw the pics and it looks nice, I was just concerned about the longevity of the mount and you've answered that. Next question though, have you looked underneath it? Has the adhesive ruined the dash? I like to think about resale.

I can't find it now but a few years ago I saw a mount just like the pro-clip (it came out of the dash at an angle) but instead of using adhesive it was a thin metal plate. To install you would remove the head unit bolts, place this plate in between the mounting brackets for the head unit and dash and then replace the unit. So it was "sandwiched" between the OEM mounting hardware. Then you just attached whatever mounting option you needed for your device. Just like the pro-clip but without the adhesive. Has anyone seen anything like that? I've never removed the RNS-E system so I don't even know if there are bolts down the side of the unit.

Yes, its hard to get the little bits out of my grille afterwards.
But in all seriousness this picture was taken from chest level, so in reality i see over the screen. The only visibility loss is due to the mounting arm and its a bit of a pita to set up for short rides.

with proclip you're really better off going with one of the options that actually clips into the trim. adhesive doesn't last forever. i have both the one that goes over the center ac vents, and the one that clips jsut to the right of the radio. both work well. i don't have them in because i need to order a new mount for the actual phone since i sold my droid.

I used to have a panavise mount for my xm satellite radio in my old car. mounted behind the factory radio, and never moved once (did its job). only negative was the placement - sometimes passengers would hit their knee on it.

Had to take phone out to take a picture but you get the point. Aux cord come out of a n empty button until a find a bolt that looks right and fits the area
