Here's my install on the old B5:
Now I am installing on my B7 S4.
Before:
After:
The cradle connects directly to the CD Changer cable, thereby replacing your CD Changer. Control is accessed through the CD Changer controls on the NAV/Radio. I reinstalled the CD Changer just to fill in the space for the OEM look when you open the glovebox.
I routed the cable up to the CF trim and tucked it behind. Then I ran it over the CD changer in the gap between the Changer and the surrounding:
The glovebox opens and closes with no hassle and wires to get in the way.
This is the cable I used which can be purchased here:
The cradle is also a DICE unit:
As for mounting plate I chose the PROCLIP angled mount at http://ww.proclipusa.com I don't have to remove the radio to install it, and it doesn't require drilling.
Price breakdown:
not including shipping and tax, rounded off
DICE wiring kit: $145
DICE cradle: $54
Proclip Mounting plate: $35
TOTAL: ~$234.00
What I like best is that there is only ONE wire, so clutter is minimal. Also, when I have to put my ipod away out of sight when I park the car, all I have to do is lift it off the cradle. On my old setup in the B5, I had to take it out of the cradle, then pinch the connector (much like the Apple USB cable). The cable was then left dangling. With this setup there is no dangling cable, and when I get back into the car, all I have to do is drop the ipod into the cradle... I no longer have to connect the cable. It's all one step. Sounds like a small thing, but after years of use, the convenience is appreciated.
One thing I don't like about the DICE mount as it has the logo. Anyone know if the logo can be removed easily?
EDIT - MORE PICS!!
EDIT 04/18/2009 - iPhone hook-up added:
The DICE now has a 5V cable for charging the iPhone 3G. I installed it a few months ago but never got a pic:
The iPhone charges and plays thorough the DICE dock. All audio, including alerts, apps, games, and even Pandora (not to mention the iPod app) play through the stereo. Receiving calls acts the same way thought the audi bluetooth. The song/app pauses and the call rings through the speakers. When your call is done, songs resume playback where they left off. Very convenient. Sound quality is flawless with no hissing or feedback, just like the iPod, but I am a little dissapointed with Pandora through no fault of the DICE unit. Pandora audio is compressed so that it can stream easily through both edge and 3G, so quality isn't as clear as the iPod app.
I also use a Griffen FORM case which has a bottom that slides off easily for full port access. I just take off the bottom and slide it onto the DICE unit.
Added bonus of mounting the iPhone by the radio is easy use of the Google Maps app. We all know that it's somewhat of a chore to find a location in the Audi NAV system if you don't have an exact address. The Google Map app solves all of this and is much faster/easier in inputting a location. Also, it's like having 2 NAVs in the car, although Google Maps doesn't have true turn-by-turn directions.
Note: The 5V cable is available separately for $40 if you want to upgrade your old DICE unit, but comes with all new kits. Just make sure it says 5V and it will charge your iPhone.
