Had issues this morning with starting the car

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
i have read this somewhere here the first week i got my S4, someone was complaining that they have a problem starting the car in the morning when it's too cold. Well i have had a few of those but what happes it it usually takes about 2-3 seconds for the car to crank up. This morning we had the coldest morning this year in the low 20's and i first tried to start it held the key in for almost 5 seconds, NOTHING, second try 3 seconds still nothing, then after the 5 tries, and almost 4 seconds the car cranked. Is this really a common and normal thing on our cars when it's cold outside? If not what could it be,

    thanks

all depends...when was the last time the car was used? was it parked outside? how much gas do you have in the tank?

^^true..i personally have never had an issue with either of my S4s....i started up my car this morning and it sat for 3 days of non-driving. When you try and start it next time, turn the key to the on position, wait about 3-5 seconds, then turn it on, see if that helps.

This deserves an explanation... When you're turned to the "on" position, your electrical system is turned on, and subsequently your fuel pump pressurizes the system. If you're car has been left sitting for several days, the pressure in the system drops a lot more, especially if these are cold days.

BUT I think these cars are still too new to be having any starting issues for any reason.

Re: Had issues this morning with starting the car

It has to be something with the ignition switch or some sensor (crankshaft position sensor maybe?) acting slowly when it is cold.

I have the same thing happen to me. Push in the clutch and nothing. Turn key off and repeat a few times and it starts. Hasnt done it in a while because it hasnt been too cold but tomorrow I bet it will occur.

Do a search on Audiworld. I believe its been discussed. Most likely the ignition switch needs replacing, apparently it dies a slow death.

Re: Had issues this morning with starting the car

^^^ thanks i will look into this

Im almost sure it has to do with how cold it is. Yesterday when leaving work it was in the low 30's the car fired right up. This morning we had our coldest day this season about 10 degrees, and it took almost 10 tries for the car to start. Everything turns on but the car will not crank. It does make sense that the ignition switch would cause that, but why is it only doing that when it's really cold??

Re: Had issues this morning with starting the car

Several have had similar problems...mine turned out to be the starter. It got progressively worse over time and as the weather got colder. The dealership finally replaced the starter and no issues since. I'd try a search here and AW. I just tried a search here and the search didn't seem to be functioning .

    Here's a few threads I found @ AW...

Re: Had issues this morning with starting the car

I had this problem. The last thing they did was the starter and it fixed the problem. They changed both clutch switches, some relays and nothing worked. The starter was the problem. If you cant start the car you can hook up jumper cables to start it. You dont even have to let it sit and juice up, once you hook them up it will start right away. I actually kept a trickle charger in the trunk so i didnt need another car when it wouldnt start. Its definitely working fine now though
