For the life of me I cannot get my car to sync with my new garage door opener.

I've STFA and found 1 thread where a member describes how to make it work with a B5 (since all the instructions are for B6+ models with the transmitter in the bumper vs. overhead).

    Anyone have any tips?

What I've tried so far is:

    1. Press buttons I and III together for 20 seconds to reset code.
    2. Press button I until it flashes slowly
    3. Press garage door button to get it to sync inside the cabin, multible locations from 0-12" apart from the Homelink module in the visor.

I know normally it's supposed to flash the hazards but apparantly it does not do this for the B5 so you just have to keep on trying until it works?

Yup. B5 Specific instructions are in the owners manual. I can look in a bit if you don't have one.

For some retarded reason, I never thought to check the owners manual. I'll grab that at lunch.

Do you have to be IN the garage as well or within the vicinity of the garage or can I do this at work?

I'm also aware that the car has to be ON, but not started as well as the handbrake must be applied as well.

That is what you have. There are almost no garage door openers left in the market that do not have a rolling code.

You have to be well within the reach of your Garage main motor or receiver. Especially since you will have to sync the rolling code and register your homelink device as a valid "remote". And on that note, as you are in Toronto come out to the Barbecue in August :)

    Re: Homelink Help

some garage door openers have, a button on the actual opener itself (the part with the chain or belt guide attatched to the door) that you have to press before it can be syncd with the homelink.

    Re: Homelink Help

ya real simple I just got it to work. Press and hold I and III at the same time for 20 seconds to clear all memory. Once it begins to flash repetitively then you can let go. Hold whatever number you want to program for 5 seconds then while holding press your original garage door opener and wave it around about 2-4 inches away until the homelink flashes again then release. Now go to the actual opener and there should be a button somewhere on it. You need to press that and then get in the car and press the button you just programed about 2-3 times until it reads. Once programed you should be able to hold the button and the door should open.

Awesome, I'll be trying this tonight when I get home. When pressing the button on the garage door opener, should I be pressing and holding while I wave it around or just press once, release and then 'wave'.

    Re: Homelink Help

Actually, you don't have to do it in order.

I just recently had to reprogram mine, and I did the rolling code first, and then the garage door opener remote.

Just go to the opener and click the learn button, then go to your car and click the button of your choice twice (some openers require this as mentioned in the manual). Then get the remote for your opener and put it an inch or two away and press and hold both buttons simultaneously until the homelink light starts flashing quickly (no "waving" needed).

Or do the remote first, and then go click the learn button on the opener. Doesn't matter.

    Re: Homelink Help

Thanks to fikes and spearson, just got it working right now.

The problem was it was a rolling code and the 'learn' button on my opener was hidden underneath the light cover which i had to remove to get access to it.

    Re: Homelink Help

I've lived at a place where the homelink simply could not be programmed to the opener. I think the remode broadcasted as a burst just to short for the homelink to pickup.

I must be a fucking retard.... Tried all this every which way and I still can't get it to work. Here's what I've been trying.... Someone please correct me where I'm going wrong:
    Reset all codes
Select desired garage button on visor (number 1)
    Car is in garage
Press Learn button on Actual Door Opener
Press remote opener down to train homelink...

    What the hell... So confusing.

Anyways, if someone can guide an idiot through this please let me know. I'd love to use the homelink unit in my A4...

Trust me, I felt like this too, that's why I made the thread. If it wasn't for the help on here, I would still probably be trying to figure it out.

I think you are missing the 'rolling code' portion of it. You have to find the button on the actual door opener UNIT, not just the remote.

Followed the manual and the instructions here. For visor programming (rolling code) AND working handheld. For both of my motors.
No luck. None takes. Got it to work without problems on other cars with build in 'link', and even aftermarket key chain remotes.

Thanks for this thread. Just moved into my new house and was happy to be able to get the rid of the old remote and use my visor controls!

Does anyone know if homelink works for just a regular access key at an office or parking garage?

    Old thread bump!

Just used this procedure to program my homelink. Took a few tries using the learn button on the opener and holding the #1 HL button while pressing a remote a couple inches away from the visor. Nice to have this sorted out.
