Coolant warning on...but it's full...? **FIXED**

I'm ready to be flamed if this is just too noob...

Drove my car to the bodyshop the other day and I remember the low coolant warning turned and stayed on. The coolant is full, to the recommended line.

I read somewhere else that someone was having problems with their sensor because the water they used was too 'pure' for the sensor to read. And someone suggested adding some tap water, because of the metals in the water, to get the sensor working.

Filled her up with 50/50 G12 and distilled water (purchased in a bottle from the grocery store...the water, not the coolant).

When I get the car back, should I just add some tap water or do you think the sensor is bad?

    Re: Coolant light...but it's full.

The sensor worked perfectly fine up until this point? Nothing changed?

I doubt that your coolant all of a sudden is now 'too pure' for the sensor, which had no problem reading it before.

I would not recommand putting anything in but g12, g12+ and distilled water.

Is your coolant temperature guage reading like it normally does?

Temp gauge is great...replaced sensor less than 6 months ago.

I replaced the entire front clip and did the timing belt...so my car was without coolant for 2 months. Filled her up with Pentosin G12 and distilled water...drove the car around for a bit and topped it off. So the new radiator took the coolant just fine and it bled out of the top pipe perfectly. This was right before taking the car to the bodyshop for paint.

The sensor worked fine before my accident happened.

Re: Coolant warning on...but it's full...?

For all you non believers, it was fixed by adding a splash of tap water to the reservoir tank. No more warning!

The bottled water I was using must have been too pure for the sensor to read...or maybe it was all just a big fluke, who knows.

Strange. Well I guess it wasn't as random as I thought, I thought your gauge read fine, then randomly stopped working - in which case I can't see how it suddenly became too pure, after being fine before.

Anyway, glad you fixed it and a very easy fix on top of that.

I have read this in another thread on here before I think. Glad you got it working.

The thread you guys are thinking of: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...ervations+meth

However, this is for Meth in the washer reservoir. Straight up G12 and distilled water is the way to go for your coolant tank.

I've been struggling with this problem for two months , I'm gonna try doing the timing belt, water pump etc. Hopefully that'll do it..Maybe i should suck it up and bring it to a pro..where's the fun in that. Congrats Greg, well done, I'm jealous...

Nothing wrong with running water as coolant.

It works way better than the G12 to extract heat.

Re: Coolant warning on...but it's full...? **FIXED**

I'm running a 50/50 G12 mix...but I purchased distilled water in a bottle at the grocery store and the coolant level sensor couldn't read the level of coolant in the reservoir tank for some reason.

So I added a splash (less than 1/2 cup) of tap water to the tank and the sensor started reading again.

Could have been a fluke or could have been from the metals in the tap water. But my mix is G12, distilled water and 1/2 cup of tap water.

True, but can also freeze in these shitty temps.

Until it freezes then you are screwed if you need to drive anywhere.

Don't think so. All the coolant drained when I ran into the parking pole...then I did the timing belt, vcg, ect. and refilled the system with new G12 and distilled water.

What would be the proper flush method and should I have done that?

Regardless, everything is working fine now.

yes, you shouldve just flushed the whole thing. you still can, not hard, but you put all the fluids back in. You just fill the system up with a hose and just run the car for a few minutes then drain it. Repeat this process until what drains out is clear. Mine looked like mud and i had to flush it 5-6 times before it ran out clean.
