    Audi/Android Interface Units

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
This thread is for all that have installed the Android Interface in their B8's to share pictures, questions, comments and whatnot. Lets keep this thing on track. This thread is only for discussion of the 7" and various 10" models that run Android integrated into the vehicle, not the carplay versions.

I am one of the original beta testers for the 7" unit in my A4. The install was fairly simple with the hardest part running the wires for the rear camera and relay to turn on the camera (only required for 6M).

Mine has been installed since August and its been running generally well with one major software update issued. Sounds like another one is right around the corner.

Yep, this thread is for those that replaced the entire unit with the full interface (mostly concert).

Is that with a wireless connection or do you have to physically plug in your android phone to enable the android auto functionality?

Both can be done. But physical plug-in through a USB adapter shows superior performance. Wifi Connection sometimes lags.

    Definitely both can be done.
OG"original beta tester" here & I never plug mine in. I always use wireless & I have not experienced any lag at all.

Awesome, I'm looking forward to getting my hands on the 10.25" version. What is the biggest SD card you have used in the unit? I believe Daniel has said they support up to 128GB. I'm hoping to have a large music library of flac or lossless music stored in the car to be able to play from more so than from my iPhone (even though it is the 256gb 7+ model) I don't have access to Apple Car Play (ACP) yet, but I am assuming it will be limited to Apple Lossless as the highest quality audio format it will be able to play. But even that will be a huge jump up in quality from mp3 format on the 32gb SD cards in the Concert or Symphony models. I'm also assuming I will be able to find a decent Android player on the Google store to be able to play Flac or other similar HQ music formats?

So if I understand this correctly, those of us with MMI 3g with navigation (2012 Q5) can currently buy the car play support product, but not the full 7 inch replacement yet? But work is being done for a full touchscreen 7 inch drop in replacement for MMI 3G in the future?

not sure, but i think the 128gb sounds correct. I have only used the sd card that came with the unit which is 16gb.

Ok, so size of the card aside, are you using it to store music, and if so, what format of music are you using? mp3? mp4? aac? flac? Thanks!

None of these, it has some data for the igo maps which the unit comes with. i do not store anything else one it and only used it to apply an update a month ago.

I know the site and followed the old thread that was deleted.

I genuinely want to know if it's against the forum rules to post a link to a product you purchased for your car if you are not affiliated with the company.

    Hi Elscotto,
Did you installed all the device comes with it in the package? Such as the external GPS receiver... or you just rely on the standard GPS comes within the device.

I had some time to install my 7" unit and it is now up and running. I yet to install the backup camera or the android auto adapter. I am planning on adding those during the week or next weekend. I am going to run the android auto/spare usb into my center console. Elscotto did you mount the GPS antenna on the dash or by the rear view mirror? I am thinking of moving my antenna and running the wire up to the mirror area.

    Some installation tips,

When installing the new screen surround trim piece, just push on the old surround until it breaks off. You can heat the existing plastic welds with a heat gun or hair dryer to make them more brittle. Once the old trim is out of the way you can use a knife to clean the remaining plastic weld off the tabs. DO NOT SCORE THE TABS BEFORE BREAKING OFF THE OLD TRIM. You will lose the entire tab! However the tabs just serve as an alignment tool so as long as you have some of them left you are fine.

When replacing the radio, check to make sure the large adapter and Audi radio plug are sitting above a metal bar found near the back of the opening (which I assume the rear of the radio rests on). It took me a few minutes to realize the adapter was catching on that bar when I slid the radio back in. Another pro tip might be not to do the install at night like I did .

The AMI can be removed without the audi/vw radio keys if you aren't worried about bending some of the plastic. Ask me how I know!

I was able to use OBDeleven to code AUX into my radio. I am also going to see if it can disable the Audi BT (otherwise your wheel control will launch google AND the audi voice command function) and will update the thread.

I got a chance to test the unit out this weekend and was very impressed. The quality of the screen is great and it looks totally OEM. The google maps was snappy and thanks to BT streaming I WILL NEVER AGAIN HAVE TO ADD MUSIC TO AN IPOD.

Yes, everything was installed. The unit does not have a typical internal GPS sensor like a phone does. You have to install the GPS sensor on the dash or on the windshield like I did.

I thought it would be better if the antenna was "belly-up" and facing the sky for better reception.
in the center of the dashboard for example.

Do you have a good satellite signal?

Do you have any pictures/could you take some pictures of how you routed the wiring? Up the A pillar and under the headliner?

Sorry no I do not have any. The wire can be tucked behind the headliner (i have two 1 for my dash cam and one for the GPS), loosen the A pillar, remove and run down that minding the airbag, then close to the dash then down behind the dash. Remove the fuse panel to get some more working room.

I have received a few PM's which all have generally included similar questions. Here are a few more tips and general items to note for these units:

    1) Installation
The units are plug and play with the exception of manual trans cars. When wiring in the backup camera, you must add a relay for the camera to turn on when you put it in reverse. The relay install is very simple with plenty of available fuses in the trunk and the appropriate reverse light wire accessible. The remaining installation will require the removal of the screen trim, screen, vents, radio and climate control unit. All come out fairly easily. In addition, you will need to remove the glove box to route wires and connect the CAN. If you have an AMI in the glove box, you will need VW/Audi radio removal tools to remove the AMI to access one bolt behind it. There are a few options to place the GPS sensor and the mobile data sensor on the dash, under the center speaker grill or above near the rear view mirror.

    2)GPS
The unit does not operate like a phone or tablet in regard to GPS. You MUST install the GPS sensor for you have a signal and use any map application.

    3)Android Functions and Audi Functions
Both of these are fairly seamless. Keep in mind if you are listening to FM or Sirius you will not get any sound from any app or otherwise from the unit. It will obviously still show you whatever you are running on the screen, but there will be no sound until you switch the media to AUX. When in AUX, you get all sounds through the unit (app sounds [maps], BT, streaming music, etc).

Hopefully this clears up some questions.

Hey Daniel, any updates on the 10.25 inch units? I thought they were gonna get sent out beta testers a couple weeks ago, but I haven't seen any new vids/photos posted by anyone. Is there any new info about that model?

    Keep up the great work.

Since the original thread was deleted most of the enthusiasm is gone. Sad really, it seems the mods crushed a small business with the click of a button.

It really sucks that the original thread got taken down, but I think the excitement for this great product will be revived quickly. A number of people have been waiting for the 10.25 inch model, which IMO is the nicest looking one of the bunch. Once more info is released, it should give this product some more momentum once again.

    Keep up the great work.

10.25" development is almost done. Still without the full steering support, but it's stable and ready to be tested. I think it will be shipped to beta testers next week.

3G MMI is hardware wise ready to be released, but only the problem is that we need co-op from a CANBUS software specialist to support MMI console buttons and steering buttons, but he's not responding to our request saying he's too busy now.

Wasn't there a member here that said he could help with that?

The stuff is their proprietary, and not sure If the third party can jump in help.

It's NXP LPC1756FBD80, TJA1055T/c, MCP2551 for the CANBUS. Anyone who is familiar with it can jump in.

Unfortunately, the MMI console support is something to do with SPI bus for its update. So, it requires a special converter and software and access to the mother board. So if you get a version without the MMI console support, you will be stuck forever.
