I was at a drive through, windows stopped, AC stopped, and CEL light came on, airbags, ESC, electric assist steering, turned off. Turned off the car And everything worked but then after a short drive, everything acted up again

Maybe a bad battery, or bad battery ground. Go to an auto parts store (or bring the battery in) and have them test your battery to rule it out.

if it really is a bad battery, does our car really have a self preservation mode of sorts? turns off everything but the engine. Thats amazing lol

I'm thinking your battery voltage is too high or too low. Check it with a volt meter.

When I bought my car CPO, my dash froze and everything stopped working. Turned off the car and back on same issue, the car can drive tho. took it back to the dealer and the battery was replaced under warranty. everything is good after that.

they typically don't replace batteries under warranty, however I just bought it CPO and after a yelling match they caved in.

The car does have a self preservation mode tho.

no check engine came on for me tho

interesting. My car is at the dealership right now. Let's see what they come back with. how much would a battery for this car run anyway?

Sounds like the issue I had with over voltage. The dealer replaced the voltage regulator. There's actually a TSB for this, 2031145/2. It seems to be a common enough issue to issue a TSB and the same voltage regulator is used across most of the model line (A4, A5, A6, A7, Q5, Q7). Interestingly enough it doesn't explicitly list the S4 but the symptoms are the exactly the same. Maybe they don't list the 'S' variants and just fall under the 'A' line. Here's the repair order:

So far it hasn't reoccurred. Here's the TSB: http://www.esghotwire.com/bulletins/...TC_Present.pdf

So the dealership came back and said:

    1) i needed a new battery and needs to be programmed ($370)... i didnt know our batteries needed to be programmed??
    2) ECM needs to get reflashed ($305)... there goes the stage 1 tune. They are saying that stage 1 tune could be one of the root causes which i find hard to believe.
    3) I need 3 relays replaced and reflashed ($550)

all in all, im out $1225...

    Nah, screw the dealer.

    1. You can do it yourself with VCDS. There is a thread in the A4 section.
    2. No, don't do it. They cannot force you nor is it worth it.
    3. Replaced and reflashed for relays is likely BS. They should be pretty easily serviceable yourself.

Oh and FWIW, yes the car does have a self-preservation mode if you have some parasitic loss with the car off. It is a different code than all of yours though. (I get it sometimes with my dashcam if I leave my car parked for a few days)

You might not have much of a choice then.

Regardless, I wouldn't do the ECM update. Here is a thread on it: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...ll-2016-09-21/

I use to think you needed to vagcom the battery but I was corrected on this forum so just by a battery from Interstate or Autozone and it will code after a while, so I've been told.

yea.. so far. I'm just doing the battery and the relays (warranty wont cover). I declined the ECM reflash.. dealership said i might have issues down the line.

stealership wanted $60/relay... i found that Audi NA themselves only charges $29.95/relay. If you dont do even the smallest amount of research, the dealership will empty your wallet

I remember reading some things about not coding the battery unless the car goes into self preservation mode. The computer won't know you put a new battery in and will do the same thing it's doing now.

Like most of you said it was the voltage regulator that was the issue. I took it to another Audi dealership that works on a lot more S and RS cars. The pricks at the previous dealership changed out my relays and battery instead of regulator. Now granted my extended warranty covered me for the regulator, I still paid 500 for the relays and programming. I've been yelling at them since because I just paid for something I might have not even needed because of their sub par diagnostics skills. I asked for the voltage read outs when they checked the relays and they said they tried to obtain it but ultimately it didn't save so they don't have it.... How convenient. I'm done with Audi of Peoria in AZ
