I still haven't done the software update yet. Should I do the software update then the maps or does the order not matter.

he sends you the link for the update first as part of the complete process. put it on an SD card and install it first, the once you have that done, you download the large map file and install it. Need a 32 SD card , class 10. Going to be doing mine in the next week or so. planning on a few road trips the next 6 months, and its better if the maps and points of interest are all up to date.

It depends on if you have the most current software. If you do have the most current software, you will only need to update the map. If your software needs to be upgraded, you will have to do this first and then update the maps. Great service from Philip0001 and very quick responses to any questions through email. I did the update and it took about 2.5 to 3 hours with the software, maps, and splash screen. The service he provides is 100% legit and the ability to customize the splash screen to your liking is awesome.

you do not have to keep key in ignition ON state or car turned on.... Gas is pricey and if you leave in ignition 2 - you might drain the battery eventually...

Solution is to use KEYFOB (EVEN if you HAVE key-less entry):

First switch off the car so nothing works (you can lock the car and then unlock it so you come to initial state):

Insert the KEYFOB into the switch but DO NOT turn it / press it to ignition position! (The KEYFOB itself - no need to remove the actual key or something)

This way MMI will turn on but all other car aspects will be still off - no ignition 2 state... and this is exactly what we need: only MMI on...

and MMI will not shut off by itself after 15 minutes like it generally does if you leave car like this - because it will be in "Engineering mode"...

One note: Keep in mind "14S4GWM" has MMI 3G+ on 2014 B8.5... You have MMI 3G HIGH on 2012 B8... different units with different software...

I have the 3G+, same as you. I was hoping another solution is to be released. I PMd someone on GPS Underground who said he could update them. We will see..

Those maps are for the rest of the world cars. From what I've read, they won't work on our US MMI.

The info on this forum (where I'm a member also) is relevant for Europe. Map that is provided there is for Europe. Software that they provide is EU and is patched - so on next soft update nothing works...
There is no "real" activation solution available - neither for EU and of course not for US. Just workarounds that disable Traffic and stop showing VIN in menu of MMI etc...

I'm close to having "Genuine style" activation solution based on genuine, non patched soft for 3G+... so it can be upgraded and map stays activated and everything seen - including VIN and relevant VIN services like AUDI Connect... I will update...

So please, I will highly appreciate if you could check before posting misleading statements and confusing members here. Thanks for undertanding...

it is what it is, but I was shocked at the price for activation. I'm paying for intellectual property that isn't even his to begin with. I am sure people will pay it, but I'm not paying 50+% retail to download files and self install a nav map that I hope works.

...I was shocked . I'm not paying to download files and self install a nav map, that I hope works.

if you have constuctive solution anywhere available - feel free to share it here.

if you have relevant constructive concerns you want to raise - we can always discuss this privately but do not judge what can or can NOT be done without deep investigation.

Download the software on an SD card insert into car SD slot and follow some very specific instructions and wait it out till its done. You need software before maps update

...and new "mapstyles" update that have to be updated in order to be compatible with latest map databases... New map DB will not get applied on old soft. MMI will reject it. Just my 2 cents.

just got the set of directions from phillip, and found them a bit intimidating. worried about crashing my MMI in the process or getting stuck in some endless reboot loop--seems like a lot of steps that have to be done. for those of you that have done this, was it straightforward once you installed the SD card and went into engineering mode? I have updated my Garmin GPS units many times, but this seems like a more tricky install.

I installed the updated MMI firmware (thanks Philip!) and it was very straightforward. Just pop in the card, push a few buttons and wait 30 minutes. From what I've read, the process is similar when updating the maps. It just takes longer.

I was concerned about doing it as well due to the fact that I'm not computer savvy. Never even used an SD card before. Phillip talks you thru it, all went as he said & now I have current maps. Print out the instructions he sends you & follow them. It seems intimidating at first but is actually very easy. They say people only comment on products when they are really disappointed or really happy. I can tell you I fall into the latter category. Thanks again Phillip!

umm like 20 min for the software and like 2 hours for the maps.

dealer charges $550 or more. maps are usually pretty good for 2 to 3 years, but depending on where you live, stuff does start to get out of date, and the data base for restaurants, gas stations, etc can really become outdated after a few years. Have experienced both of those with an older Garmin we used to have that was not easily updated--it tried to send me off on a freeway ramp in LA that no longer existed, (then we got stuck in gridlock afterwards) and sent us to a shady part of town looking for restaurant that was gone. I know the smart phone supersede all this, but I still like the built in Nav for a lot of times.
