    Welding subframe

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Does anyone have any annotated pictures of where to weld the subframe? Or is it obvious based on where it seperates? All my front suspension is recent, but know the car is clunking and popping when the front of the car undergoes any torsion or braking stress.

I searched and couldn't find any pics but if you have a spot welder you need to reinforce the crimps along the inside edge of the subframe. That is the area that causes the creaking and popping.

I have this issue on my car and was planning to take a closer look at the next oil change (due now). I have a spot welder - just wondering how restricted I'm going to be from an access standpoint. Has anyone actually done this job with a conventional spot-welder with the engine in place?

i had a muffler shop weld all the spots shown in that pic and it didnt help with random pops/clunks and other noises. Guess im off to inspect suspension/steering components again.

and this thread has ran out of gas. I just wanted to tell people about my experience I had 2 nights ago and felt like sharing it with my fellow B6'ers. And I thank the people who didn't hate."

Have you figured out your issue yet I still have not. It is really annoying to hear what sounds like the front end falling apart, yet everything is tight.

i heard of a special bolt under the battery that causes loud popping and clunks, might give it a try someday...

I'm guessing one of the bolt the holds the power steering rack in place.

have you checked you subframe bolts, found one of mine was loose and caused said clunking, drove me nuts trying to find it.
Never argue with an idiot, they'll bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Steering rack bushings may be worn.
I know mine have quite a bit of play and are noisy/clunky.

    Will be replacing soon,

I'm getting ready to get my subframe welded up soon.

Does anything electrical need to be disconnected before welding for risk of over juicing components?

I always disconnect the battery ground before doing any sort of welding on a vehicle.
