As some of you know via a previous thread, my car was having timing issues...well here are some pics of what broke! Center upper guide completely shattered, and supposedly another kinda hidden one broke as well, as per the shop. Enjoy.

I'm having alot more maintenance done than just the timing service. Like everything basically, lol. So I don't know what just the timing service would cost. But I do know that these guys are very fair, and know their stuff! Redline Speed Worx baby.

You didnt get an itemized estimate for something like this? I bet its probably in the neighborhood of 5 g's then for the timing service?

Yes, I did. I didn't want to get into numbers, bc each individual car's timing job requires more or less of certain parts. And I chose to do wayy more stuff, timing wise, than it really needs. All I can say is that I was given a great labor rate for the amount of work that's being done. In addition to the full timing chain job, I'm also doing: four wheel alignment, oil change, trans refresh, rear diff refresh, engine mounts, serp belt/tensioner/roller, all cv boots inner/outer, new welded in flex pipes, ac compressor, fuel filter, all valley related gaskets, all oil pan gaskets, thermostat, all hoses, pressure control line, pcv valve, plugs, and umm...that's about it! I figured once it's out for the timing job, I might as well do everything. I'm so excited to get this refreshed 4.2 back!

Stupid question... why are the rears of these engines so immaculately clean in every picture I've seen? Is there a cover that's been taken off? Or do people always just clean up before taking photos?

Three rear covers. Everything is working in an oil bath

With all these photos being posted lately I have been really tempted to try to get the rear covers off my engine while it's still in the car since I have the transmission off at the moment. Now would be a good time to get a look around at the condition of my parts. I know that it can be done with the motor in the car, but I am thinking that it's a can of worms I need to leave be for now (my motor only has 55k miles).

I think the main cause for this is related to the little o-ring that fails near the oil filter housing. Oil leaks from their and rains down the front of the engine. Extremely common. Everything looks better once the leak is fixed and it's all been pressure washed.

I'd leave it alone if it's not acting up...once these things come apart you'll be replacing much more than just the timing stuff.

Yeah, I know. I was just trying to see if there is a pattern or not. Do you have a B6 or a B7? I believe the B7 has upgraded timing components.

B6, 2005, but an early 05 before the vin split.
