    Gnarley coil pack failure

Wanted to share this lovely coil pack failure. I was heading out for work earlier and before I got out of the drive i noticed the car was running horribly and had flashing check engine light. I didn't have time to check it out so jumped in the spare car and went to work.

Got home and pulled the codes first, holy crap 13 codes, and I check/clear them fairly frequently. Cleared the codes and went to start it up to see what returned. Cranked once and then clickclickclickclick...battery doesn't have enough juice. Grab the jumper box, pop the hood, lots of smoke coming from a coil pack. Disconnect the battery and just watch the thing smoke for the next 15 minutes. Attempted to pull the coil pack out and the top of it just pulled off, the plastic was all melty. Had to pry it out with a flat head screwdriver. I touched the metal part of the coil pack with my glove and it singed. Replaced the coil pack with a spare and runs great.

Never had any issue with the coil packs after the recall, but of course did prior to the recall and use to keep a spare in the car.

    Re: Gnarley coil pack failure

Never seen this happen before. I did have a coil pack explode on my cousin's Maxima once, but that was kind of his fault.

Any idea if this was a problem inside the coil pack itself or was it an external problem that caused it to fail?

So is this old coil pack or a new one after the recall?
