    Another allroad build thread

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So my plans are more modding than a super build but I figured I start another thread. I sold my '08 RS4 and then I picked up the allroad in late December as a garage mate to my '07 targa 4S. First step was a handful of VAGCOM mods. Second was to pick up 2 sets of Hartmann wheels (one for winter and one for summer). Details on the wheels: 19x8.5 ET35 Hartmann HTT-256-MA:M with 254/40-19 tires. I was going to run my Rotiform SNAs from my RS4 but the titanium color didn't quite work with the monsoon grey and I had a buyer lined up but they backed out so they are up for sale.

Next up is roof rack for bikes/skis, window tint and suspension. I need some help with suspension options. I want some coilovers that will drop the car (but not redonkulously low) retain a stock-like ride but firm it up in the corners and take out some of the floaty feeling at highway speeds. My wife drives the car a lot so I dpon't want to go too firm on the suspension. I was thinking of the KW Variant 1s or KW Street Comfort. Any input or suggestions ae welcomed.

Here are a few pics of the wheels. I put a few more in the wheel thread sticky.

Hartmann doesnt make a 19x9 in that wheel.
    It's either a 19x8.5 ET 25 or 19x8.5 ET38

I'm excited to see which direction you go with your suspension. So far, I've seen that the KW coil over kit has the smallest default drop starting at avant height of course (since there is nothing out for the AR yet). It starts with a .8" of a drop so if you add that to the avant height (6.4" ground clearance) difference between the AR (7.9" ground clearance). You'll have a minimum drop of 2.3" with adjustability to go even lower. That means you'll be hitting parking curbs rather than going over them with your exhaust. HR's kits start at a 1" drop so that is slightly lower that KW at the max setting. Bilstein is about the same. They all offer adjustable dampening and so ride comfort depends on $$ spent. On the other side, I've been looking at bags also since I can keep the height setting and go much lower if i want. I drive in snow and sometimes blizzards for snowboarding and don't want to loose the option for the clearance. The problem with bags besides price is that you'll pretty much either loose part of your trunk or lose your spare tire. I'm not sure what the ride is like but, the people I talk to are all about it. Next week I'll be taking a ride in one to see how it corners and such so I'll make up my mind then. Good luck!

Nice color combo and good decision to lower that truck-like stance. There are several really nicely done ARs on here with suspension mods. There are a couple of those threads that are still on the first page too.

Check out Zee007's All Road build.

My Avant has the Vogtlands. I think they are great.

However, after seeing the KW DDC with Iphone Feature: http://www.kw-suspensions.eu/int/kw_ddc.php
adjustable suspension on the S4 Forums that seems the slickest and most modern kit in a long time! Adjust your ride on the fly with the phone. Very cool.

if I had the money I would go that route, and may try something in the future. I drive mine skiing in the same configuration all year. Risky, but I don't like messing with raising and lowering 2 times a year.

Maybe Air is the way to go now? If you don't track the car, that sounds viable.

Great color by the way! looking forward to your build!

Did you have to use any spacers? I'm interested in the same wheel setup and curious as to whether I should stick with ET25 or if I have room with an ET38 (keeping my suspension stock). just getting a feel for what would fit on an AR.

    Looks amazing!
    Thanks!

Finally got around to doing the tint (50% front windows, 35% on the rest), Yakima Whispbar S16 with High Roller mounts, & ST coilovers. Normally I am not a big fan of Euro plates but I thought I'd try it to break up the allroad grille. I like it and think it looks great but I kinda like the stealthy looks with out. Jury is still out on this one. After lowering, I think I'm going to try some spacers (5-8 mm) to push the wheels out a bit and I went too low. I'll probably raise it 1/4 -1/2".

The ride quality is great. Compared to stock, the ride is a bit firmer and you do feel more of the road and imperfections. It's not harsh at all. The biggest difference is in cornering and at highway speeds. Much less body roll in the corners and the floaty feeling is gone at 65 mph +.

Curious how the ST suspension has held up out there in SLC. I'm considering moving on from the s-line avant suspension to a coilover setup and the STs are on my list. Thx.
