APR tune turns off cold start feature?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Curious if any of you have heard about this before. I had my stage 2 S4 recently re-flashed from v2.1 to v2.2

I noticed over the past week or so that my car no longer would hold a high idle on cold start.

My dealer just got the response back from APR and their tech confirmed the following

"I just confirmed we turned off cold start to smooth out starting, keep the exhaust quiet in the morning, and to get better gas mileage.

It doesn't hurt anything. It's only there to light off the catalyst, which on all other platforms is removed. So the customer should have no negative impacts from this being done"

    Seems strange to me.

That would be AWESOME. I hate the cold start feature. Especially with exhausts it is annoying. Remember, this is not the old choke, this is simply extra fuel to warm up the cat more quickly. It wastes fuel and makes noise. I am glad they did that. ESS for M3s did it too. It was highly sought after people with exhausts and neighbors. :-)

Cold starts has a purpose for emissions and also to help burn fuel when the motor is cold. That said 2.2 removed cold start. I inquired and they said they don't touch it but clearly it went away with 2.2. I'm glad to see that I am not the only one and that it is the latest tune. There was/is a cold start issue in some cars in truly cold weather. I've experienced it with the prior version of the code when the car was parked outside on a colder day <40* overnight. This must be their way to resolve the cold start issues.

OK, to be clear, what I know of is disabling secondary air injection - 2nd air pump that pumps air into the engine for teh first 15 seconds or so. That is what BMW tuners have bee killing. The mixture ratio, etc associated with cold start out to stay the same - OEM.

2.2 on Stage 2 cars are the ones that have this feature disabled.

You have Stage 1 V2.1 if you have no pulley. The 2.2 was released to fix the shift issue. I believe this is now available for Stage 1 cars no also, meaning you'll be Stage 1 V2.2

actually, I felt it when i was stage 1. While taking a few runs with Legacykid I felt like I went into limp mode after a hard shift. After a few seconds, I was back to normal. I haven't felt it since going stage 2+.

but nice to know there's a fix.

The cold start feature you are refering to is catalyst heating. It involves a high idle speed setpoint and a very late ignition angle to put all the energy out the exhaust to light of the cat as soon as possible in the emission test. The late ignition angle is why the engine is running so crappy and also the reason being so loud. It's around 20s because that is the time the car is idleing in the FTP75 emission test before the driving part begins ;)
Turning it off has no negative side effects and should improve fuel mileage a bit because with the late ignition angle the engine runs with very poor efficiency.

If purchased Stage 2 APR tune through ECStuning, (shipped in ecu), how do we get upgrades to the software and is it free? I currently have v2.01.

I have a question for you guys. when WOT did you guys hear an audible wistle from the SC. I have stg 2 intake as well. But since 2.2 upgrade I do not hear it anymore.

Notes: no cold start, get ESP light sometimes and limp mode( restart fixes it) And maybe im used to it, but 2.0 felt faster than 2.2. anyone else having weird issues?

Oh good lord....Now we get to hear swank going off on his little fits on how bad of a company APR is.

There is a known problem with 2.2 and extreme cold it seems like. Contact arin@apr on this forum or call/email him.

There's a limp mode problem with 2.2 in certain conditions in very cold weather that has been talked about in another thread. Arin has stated that they have a fix and will be rolling it out to dealers soon.

I like the high idle at startup. It makes the car sound more awesome to passers by, security cameras, etc.

Maybe because it is winter now and your windows/sunroof are shut? I can hear mine but I modified the bottom portion of the airbox to get more sound.

Was tuned to APR stage 1 recently, and I do not believe I have the cold start. I will have to double check later, but I remember it being gone.

I had an APR tune and pulley installed two weeks ago. Still have cold start function.

No my SC has been quite audible since the day I got her. with the stage 2 tune she would almost scream after 5k rpm. Doesnt feel any slower, just miss that sound.
