    CoolStream for Bluetooth Streaming?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I know many of us have gone back and forth on different kludges to get bluetooth streaming to work on our cars with MMI. I saw an article on a new device called CoolStream that use the iPod dock connector for power and audio signal and allows you to pair any device that support A2DP streaming. I was curious if anyone else had seen them or possibly tried one? Their website has a compatibility list and has some vague references that some Audi vehicles are not supported. In the Amazon reviews though, someone mentions using it with an A4, but no mention of the year.

Here is the link on Amazon:

Sunstealer, I'll pick one up and give it a try with my 2012S4. Im curious as to how iphone 4S (5.1.1) or iphone5(6.0) pair with this thing for streaming music. Also interested to see how these phones react when trying to make/recieve a call while playing music over AADP.

If it doesn't work out, Amazon has a good return policy.

I have already purchased this for the same reason. It does not seem to work in a 2009 A4. I'm not entirely sure why. I plugged it into a Sony radio with Ipod dock and it worked great. I can get it into the dock slot, the Coolstream turns on, pairs, and I show music playing on my Iphone, but the Audi system doesn't recognize that the "Iphone" is docked, so it says the CD disc is "empty". I'm assuming there should be some voltage from the phone that is not present with the Coolstream. Dissappointed to say the least. This would have been exactly what I'm looking for. If there are any tech guys that could ring in with how to "fool" the car into seeing the Iphone in the dock, that would be a great thing.

Id like to know if this works as well.

    --Edit--

Just went on the manufactures site and found some sad info

We have tested the CoolStream Bluetooth receiver with many vehicles, but far from all. Some automobiles do not support our device and these include the Acura TSX, Audi A3/A4/Q5/S4, BMW Mini Cooper, BMW 135i/328i/335d/528i/X5, Chevrolet Malibu LTZ / Tahoe, Infiniti all models from 2008 to present, Jeep Wrangler, Lexus RX350, Mercedes CLK550/GL550/E550, Mercedes all models from 2009 to present, Nissan all models from 2008 to present, and Volkswagon GTI/Jetta. CoolStream is NOT supported by iPhone/iPod cables that plug into the car stereo USB port. CoolStream is also NOT supported by after market car cables such as iSimple Gateway, Griffin AutoPilot or Alpine KCE-433iV.

Picked up one of these devices from Amazon - before @wesalexleft's message came though - got it friday, and the thing wouldn't pair with my 4S(5.1.1). This phone pairs just fine with the MMI system (as well as other Bluetooth devices) so I *doubt* there's something wrong with my phone.

In any case, I'd pass if I were you. I'd like to find a good solution for this. Junky half-baked kludges are not for me when it comes to this car.

we tried all these solutions a few months back, the mmi doesnt recognize anything being plugged in even if u do get it to pair, the only options are a custom cable. i have a wired up BB gateway ready to go if anyone is interested. pm me for details.

I bit the bullet a while back and bought this: http://www.audia2dp.com/. Pricey, but it worked. Audio would get a bit choppy once in a while and it seemed to not like that my phone (for regular voice audio) was also paired. Seemed like a bandwidth issue. But if you're desperate, I can confirm that it works.

I bought one from here: http://a2dp4audi.netmagi.com

It's made by a fellow AZ member and it works great. I've decided to go hardwired instead. I'll be selling mine if anyone is interested.

Just chiming in for information purposes. .

If any of you bought the CoolStream and don't want to return it, it should work with the custom cables I make that are available at the link dropshadow posted. The issue is that the MMI system in iPhone mode doesn't look for an analog signal, and normally an AUX cable has no option for powering a device. The custom cables get around this by emulating an AUX cable, but provide power to a standard 30-pin interface.

I am not the handiest of gents but I was able to wire a 12v power socket from my passenger side fuse box into my glove compartment. My dealer supplied me with a 3.5mm adapter and I connected up a Blackberry Stereo Gateway. This solution works well, was inexpensive, and install took 20 minutes. There are small openings in the glovebox of my 2012 S4 which allowed me to easily pass the wiring through to the fuse box.

Could you take a couple of pics of what fuse you tapped into and maybe what kind of 12v outlet you put in. I have been thinking about doing this as well, but was not sure what exactly i needed to do.

I can take pics tomorrow if you still need them. I picked up an Enercell 12VDC Vehicle Power Accessory Outlet from Radio Shack. It is model 270-046. I tapped into the bottom fuse in the right fuse column. It is a 5 amp fuse with constant power. I first connected the black ground wire to a 13mm nut located in the fuse box. I then stripped the red wire and wrapped the exposed copper around the blade of the 5 amp fuse. Reinsert the 5 amp fuse and you're done.

I just got mine in the mail and couldn't wait to install it. It took me longer to open the box, and walk from apartment to car in garage then it did to pair it and have it working. Volume needs to be pretty high on the Iphone (or streaming device) but it works great and super easy hook up. Plus it switches right to call with no button pressing on phone when a call comes in. Everything works as advertised. How very nice for a change. Great work and highly recommended.
