Clock Spring Part Number For Paddle Shifter Wheel (Not Multi-Function).

So i have a S4 wheel installed in my B6, it came from an S4 i believe, it looks exactly like my stock non-multi-function wheel except it has the paddle shifters for the tiptronic transmission. I have not been able to get the shifters to work even though the ECU is coded correctly for it. after looking at the clock spring i don't think it has enough connectors on it (only 4, two for the airbag, and two for the horn). I am looking at some of these other clock springs and there are 4 diffrente revisions, A B C & D.

tnere are a bunch of A's and D's on Ebay, i just need to know which one i should go with for the paddle support on a NON-MULTI-FUNCTION wheel that has the paddles since i am having a hard time finding many references to this swap without using the MFSW.

also, if i get a clock spring that has the correct connections, do i also need to get a new control unit (the thing the clock spring connects to behind the dash)? All my research seems to indicate that the controller is only needed for the MFSW, not necessarily the paddle shifters, and i of course would prefer not to spend more then i have to in order to get this working.

**** TITLE SHOULD HAVE SAID "CLOCK SPRING". would an admin mind updating the thread title so that it can be searched for correctly?

    bump.

the ring i have now is the "C" variant, actually both of my cars have this version.
anyone know which ring i need and if i also need to change out the control box that it plugs into?

EDIT: reviewing the link i posted above for the "D" variant, it appears to only have the top row of pins on the connection which is the same as the ring i have now, so i don't think this is the correct one, that's leaves "A" and "B" as possible options. looks like there is an "E" also.

Very interested in the solution as well. I have a revision D (8E0953541D) clockspring sitting in the box at my house that I have had for 6 months and still not installed yet. I haven't had the tool to pop the steering column apart, but now I have it. Laziness and not wanting to go through the pain in the ass process of removing the wheel again have been holding me back. The part number that I have has 6 pins on the top row and 6 pins on the bottom row.

oh really? the photos of the D revision i was looking at only had the top row, it must have been a generic stock photo.
the connector on the wheel uses the bottom row for the paddle shifter connections, so it sounds like that one might just work.

are you adding multifunction, paddle shifters, or both?

Just picked up the "A" version from ebay.
i'll post up the results once i have it and get it installed (sometime next week).

This is what i found not to long ago:

A is for Tiptronic Paddles + Multi-Function Buttons
B is for Tiptronic Buttons + Multi-Function Buttons
C is just Horn + Airbag (base model with no buttons or shift options)
D is Multi-Function Buttons without any shift control (IE: for a manual)

not sure is the "D" version will work for you EVO. not that it matters to me at this point but it would be good information to add to this thread once you get around to testing it out

I paddled my way to work this morning!!!

so, the "A" version worked but not out of the box. the places on the slip ring that the two yellow connections plug into are notched / shaped different then the ones i had on the wheel / car. it would have been easiest i think to modify the connection sockets on the slip ring but after spending $140 on a used one that i wasn't certain if it would even do what i needed it to i decided to modify the yellow connector on the wheel and the one that comes from under the dash that way i could resell the slip ring if it didn't work for the paddles. Anyway, i just took my dremel tool with a sanding disk and ground down the yellow connectors along the top and sides until they fit securely into the new slip ring. slapped it all back together and bam! paddle shifters worked!

I did NOT change the control module, i believe that is only necessary if you are doing a full MFSW upgrade on a car that did not previously have one. My understanding is that if you have cruse control then the control module should be able to support paddle or button shifting.

thanks for all of the info that was provided. i hope this helps others attempting the same modification.

My '03 Avant did not need a different clock spring, the original worked with the paddle shifter SW, all I needed to do was code the modules right.

do you know what version of the slip ring you have?

the "C" version which i had on my car did not have the pins on the connector for the paddles (only one row of pins compared to two). I would assume for some reason you had the "A" or "B" version on the car before you did the wheel swap.
maybe the Avant comes with a different ring then the sedan, don't have a clue why that would be though.

Hey Widgget, do you happen to know the full part number for your clockspring? I am trying to see if I can find a replacement, since now I am thinking the D one I have won't work as you have posted. I can always try it out just to see, but I am thinking it isn't going to work.

    Thanks!
