Fabricating Off/On Switch for FLY LEDs?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Anyone have experience doing this? or have a link to a DYI?

My goal is to have the option to turn the LED portion on/off when my beams are on. I love the look of the V4s during the day without the beams on, but sometimes at night the LEDs and beams are a little too much.

    Thanks!

Depending on how you have the LED's wires (to DRL's or city lights), you could change your car's light code. If not, you are going to either need to power them separate (line to battery, to LED's, to switch, to ground), or wire a toggle switch to switch between them, and a line you would have to make that matches the resistance of them.

Right now, they are active when I have my city lights are on (the click before beams). <--still new at this stuff.

I VAG'd the lights so when i turn them to city lights, the turn signals are not illuminated.

so i am guessing that you want oem feel, so you basically need to find a three prong switch like this:

Then basically cut intot he wire going to the LED's and put the LED side on prong 1, the other side on prong 2, and a set of resisters that match the load of the LED's on prong 3.

You need to locate the positive wire (red) from the circuit board and connect to the a 12V source via a switch and fuse. By doing so, you will be able to operate the LED independently, even with DRL
You need to leave the resistors connected to the headlight to prevent any fault code

You can't just turn them off only when the headlights are ON
You either wire them to the headlight switch ( way they are today)
    OR
You wire them to a separate 12V source and a separate switch

Couldnt you do what I said, or would the very quick gap when switching that switch cause issues?
Oh, and I'll go video my PCV right now while I'm thinking about it!

he is saying to completely take them off of your audi wiring and do your own to an in cab switch.

If you didnt ask phil to wire the LEDs for an independent power source (which i am assuming is the case) then listen to cornelius. As for the switch, i bought a little rocker switch off ebay and mounted it where the DRL switch is supposed to go, right next to the headlight switch.

I tapped into the city light wire as my power source so when the headlight switch is in the "off" position, the LEDs cant be on, even if the switch is on.

I also wired a switch in for the DRLs and put LED bulbs in, so with my setup, i can have any light on independently than the rest. The other switch i hid under the steering column by where the car manual goes. Heres a little bit of pic whoring.

I am assuming that you are running euro coding for the lights, but how exactly did you wire it to make it so you can do fogs without city light's? I have the come home and drl switches stock, euro coding, and I did the wire in the plug trick to make it so that when my city lights are on I can pull the knob and make my fogs come on too.

Are your LED's wired up interdependently to a 12V source? and then if so, you wired it to take power from the DRL's? but then you have DRL's and LED's in the one picture?

I really like your setup, I'd like to copy it if you dont mind!

Of course, as you can see my setup offers a vast variety of lighting options to suit the mood,

So what I asked phil to set up the leds to be powered by a 12v source. My car had halogens and i converted to bi-xenons so i never had the DRL function. When flys leds are set up for an independent source, there is a resistor for the city lights so no codes are triggered. So when i first installed the lights the "city light" position on the headlight switch did nothing at all. I had the fog mod done so i could pull it out for fogs at "city light" position, but no other light came on. Then what i did was pop out the headlight switch, find the city light wire, and i used that source to power the new LEDs. So in a way they act like city lights, but i can turn them off whenever via the switch, even with the main beams on. Then i noticed that the DRL bulbs in the bi-xenons were still intact, but phil had clipped the wires (they have no use usually for a car converted from halogens) just leaving the tips of the +pos and -neg terminals visible. I attached wires to them, powered them via the city light wire, threw in some LED bulbs, and viola, any lighting combination i want! I realized there were no other locations to put a switch to make the car look as OEM as possible so i hid the new DRL switch under the steering wheel by the car manual.

I see! Thanks for the info. So when you power both extra sources from the city light's power source, it doesnt throw a warning on the screen for not enough resistance, thinking that the bulb is out?

And I am not sure if I can get as much freedom as you since I have bixenons stock and I think if I didnt have the city light hooked up, it would yell at me.

I do love that you have that much freedom though! I think when I get them, I'll have to get the city lights resistored out, and then run the LED's off that line with a switch like you so I can go only LED's, only fogs, both, only headlights, headlights and LED's, headlights and fogs, or all three.

I like the idea! Thanks again!

Yea as long as you code your car do disable drls you should be fine. The LEDs use like no power so they won't throw a code.

That's good to know. I am already at Euro Lights so i can run Fog's with cities right now, or even with brights on, and my ambers only turn on with turn signals.

Do you know the pin layout on the back of the light plug? What one is the city light positive wire?

For me with the amps hooked up to the rsne the amps didnt turn off when the car turned off as the deck normally controls that signal. So in theory the amp was drawing power all the time but mine never ran to much necessitating a cutoff. but now that i run an aftermarket deck the amps kick off when the deck dies.

I did this, via the DRL switch.

I connected the DRL to a relay on/off instead of powering the LEDs. Then I connected the LEDs to the battery via the relay. DRLs on, LEDs on.

Rest is managed by the switch and whatever programming you have via VaG-Com.

I meant using the switch for the LED's and then wiring the coming home lights to be on the on position forever. I dont see why I would ever turn them off.

Had time to take some pics of my wiring. Its very simple as you'll see. Im not a master electrician so excuse the poor connections...

So hidden in the wire loom is the positive/negative wires from the Flys LEDs and the DRL

Wires then run under coolant tank and up to the firewall.

Ran them through the firewall, and next to the master cylinder, into the rubber grommet pictured.

Wires come out of grommet and under steering column out of hole pictured (hard to see i know)

Wired up the DRL positive wire to the switch mounted by car manual

Then did same thing for LED positive wire

    Grounded them here

AND used city light wire to power them (grey/blue stripe)

You also gotta ground the LEDs/DRL somewhere. I grounded them under the cover on the left of the battery. Theres a little threaded nipple there.

So its very simple like i said, and looks very clean... from the outside.

Ask Phil to set up the wiring to be independent from the city light and follow my instructions. This will allow the fogs to come on independently as long as you have done the "Fog Mod" when headlight switch is set to city light. As for led drls, there are threads covering it, check "what did you do to b7" thread, end of pg. 152
