Guys i had the same problem mine started after the cambelt broke on 150 000Km/93000Ml so i had to get new valves and redo the Cylinder head
no one was able to find the problem and i drove it like that until last week let me tell you what went wrong on 220 000Km/136700Ml
that same noise started while i was on the highway doing 80Mph/130Km/h and didn`t stop at all, took it to the dealer and turns out that noise was coming from the CCT that was faulty so they replaced the CCT when i collected the car from the dealer the oil pressure light came on long story short its still not fixed seems to be the shims on the head is faulty or the oil pump. the dealer also told me the cct works on oil pressure and that the it went faulty because of the low oil pressure to find this out so far cost me about $2000. at this moment they are still working on my car will give feedback when its all sorted out shouldn`t be too long

^^^ most likely the problem was originally in the oil pump , i know vw 1.8ts have a ball that is spring loaded , when you turn the car off it blocks the oil from coming back down into the oil pan , if that is not working properly you will get cold start up noise because all the oil is in the pan

this is vw AWM engine .. should be same as the AMB
