Oil Change in the S5 Made Easy

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
This afternoon was the first time I've changed my oil in the S5, and it was so easy I felt compelled to post.

I bought a large Pela oil extractor, and between that and having the oil filter cover socket (and a real dipstick) this was an incredibly easy task. First time using the extractor, and it was probably a 20+ minute deal. Sucked 9 quarts exactly.

For those of you who still crawl under the car, you must give these things a try.

Nice. Did you use an air line with the extractor or was it electric?

Oh cool cool. Neat devices! You and I will never change oil the "old" way. I use the one that hooks up to an air compressor.

How complete is the draining of the old oil? Seems like a fair amount of residue would be left behind versus a full drain plug job.

The official capacity is 9.3 qts. I sucked exactly 9, so there's less than a 1/3 of a qt in there. Some is in the filter (that's replaced).

    I can live with that.

It's a VW 502 spec oil--I think it's the only Mobil 1 oil available in the US that meets the specs.

It's also the only spec oil that I could find locally (Walmart, AutoZone).

You should stick to spec oil to maintain warranty coverage.

I just did the 15k service myself yesterday. This was my first oil change on the S5 and especially on the 4.2L V8 engine. I had previously changed the oil in my A4 2.0T. I can probably do the next service like this one in under an hour. The oil takes about 20 minutes to come out which means you can change the air filter while you're anyway waiting. You will need to pump a few more times during the 20 minutes to keep the vacuum at 15in Hg. Depending on the size extractor you have, you may need to dump it out before continuing to extract. Mine is supposed to hold ten liters but sort of gave up at nine (there was still half a quart in the engine). I wasn't too happy about that. Well, "they" anyway suggest alternating extraction with oil drain oil changes. So that twice-cooked oil will come out before it gets cooked for a third time.

I should note that the one thing you must make sure you have is a 1-1/4" socket for the oil fiter. My old socket for the 2.0T was 36mm and too big for this one. i was surprised it was such a good fit despite being SAE and not metric. I'm guessing the metric equivalent is 32mm. Also make sure the socket is for the right size drive torque wrench in your toolbox. It needs to be tightened at 25Nm or roughly 15ft-lbs. the oil filter first goes into the metal bottom housing (it has a protrusion that makes it go in only one way) and then the top part gets screwed on. Apply force slowly so that the oil filter's tabs on the top click into the groove on the inside of the top cover. That's what makes the oil filter stick to the top part when you unscrew it. Oh, and don't forget to replace the seal that goes in the gap in the threads of the screw-top (seal included with oil filter).

The cabin filter was a bit of a pain because of the location (deep in the passenger footwell) but now that I know how to replace it, I can do a better job by just sitting in the seat and doing it by feel.

Edit: regarding the oil service reminder reset, on mine I can do it via the MMI (Car button, Service interval, Reset Oil Service interval). I still need a VAG-COM for the inspection interval reset ... and for the other million uses.

Just a word of caution--don't let the oil sit in the extractor after you're done. They get flooded internally and hosed up as a result.

32 mm socket for S5 oil filter
    4.9 qt's for 2.0T
If you do wanna drain the S5 from the bottom it's not very hard to get to. Only 12 1/4 turn Phillips screws and skid plate is off and a 6 mm hex socket for drain plug.
Work at a dealer , we prefer to drain everything from bottom except 2.0T chain motor. Oil extractor just doesn't seem to get all the oil out of V6's and V8's

Yes sir. On mine there is no traditional dipstick. There's just a dipstick pipe plug. I see you can buy a bona fide dipstick online: http://www.europaparts.com/oil-dipst...9115611ab.html

Just slowly feed the dipstick tube (from the extractor) into the pipe until it stops. I know, it goes without saying. Just be careful not to ram it in there (TWSS). I'd let the engine cool down a little first.

I'm guessing the dealership sold throwaway1 on the entire "service". You know, "inspect", "verify", "confirm", "ensure". You're paying 2 hours of SAE rates for someone to pretend to look into different things and do the sniff test. No thank you. They can do that at 100K. At 15K (in my case), it better only need an oil change (and new filters).

Could just be the area. Out here in Denver prices seem to be much lower. Used to own 2 BMW's and had full synthetic oil/filter change done for $85/EA which included fluid check/fill and tire rotation (a local special that comes up all the time at my dealer). I found out one of my family members pays $250 in CT for the exact same oil change from his dealer.

Out here, one Audi dealer has a $90 oil change special (4cyl only, other engines "slightly higher" whatever that means) and another has a $95 one that includes fluid top off and tire rotation. Not sure what the "slightly higher" is but hopefully it's not creeping past $150.

I ordered the ultimate service kit from you guys (sans spark plugs, fuel filter, or wiper blades). It was all packed very well into one box which arrived in great condition.

To the community: the filter is a Mahle and the air filters are Mann.

Lubro Moly is damn fine oil. Owning a VW / AUDI shop for 14 years and only using Lubro Moly, I have never had a customers engine fail, related to oil. ( I think Pentosin rates higher than Mobil One too)
Also 0/40 is a little thin, its acceptable as an alternative, but 5w/40 is preferred. ( says it in your manual)

Eff Mobil 1. I wouldn't use that in my Audi.

Finally got the Ross-Tech VAG COM cable (bought it from EuropaParts). What a sweet tool, that VCDS. So I wanted to post this update in case anyone else comes across this problem. Although I was able to reset the oil service reminder (10k/365) through the MMI, I was still getting the "Service due!" alert upon startup and shutdown. Nothing like having to explain that to passengers. I thought it might be the past due inspection reminder. So I reset the "time since" and "distance since" for the inspection as well as the "service reminder" (from 1 to 0). No go. It still threw the error ... and it reverted the service reminder back to 1. I ended up having to do a full service reset (dedicated button in VCDS) (even though it wasn't going to update anything other than what I had already updated). Then I restored the time/distance since inspection and oil change. A little redundant but ... now I know.

On to the brake flush this weekend ...

Hello. New member here. Recently picked up a 2010 S5 and want to do an oil change even though the dealer said they had just done one. You know where I'm coming from. So I'm trying to remove the skid plate and the two of the three screws that join the forward and rear skid plate together will not back out of the blind nuts. I was wondering if it's ok to remove the brace/bracket that they are attached to. It's held on with 6 large bolts (not sure of the size) that have an 18mm head. Short of removing that bracket, I'm out of ideas. Thanks.

A little redundant but ... now I know.

Anyone of you guys have some pictures to help us newbies with our first oil change on the 3.0T? I really do not want to take my car into the stealership.
