    RS5 Steering Wheel Install

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I swapped in the RS5 wheel today, took about 30 mins, VERY easy. I wanted the thicker wheel and air leather both for the feel of it and to match the RS6 shift knob I put in earlier, but didn't really desire the flat-bottom enough to shell out the $1200+ required for that look. The RS5 wheel fit the bill, and I found one on Ebay for $605 shipped from a guy in Warsaw Poland. Arrived in 12 days and is a genuine OEM mint part in correct packaging.

Since some had asked about the install here's a quick recap, though DavidB8 pretty well documents this on AudiEnthusiast.com here: http://www.audienthusiasts.com/ProjectSteeringSwap.html (all hail David, his instructions are always spot on, so I'm just recounting and expanding a little on his excellent work, all credit goes to him!) it's pretty much the same as his S-Line install in his A4. Couple of thoughts: Make sure before you start that you've got a T55 Torx socket, my "standard" Schwaben kit ended at T50, so had to make a run up to Sears before I started, which gave me a chance to buy some locktite as well, as you'll want to freshen the locktite on the main steering wheel bolt threads.

This is a straight swap, utilizing your standard airbag so just plug-and-play, no wiring changes. You'll just need a few tools, 10mm wrench for your battery disconnect, small screwdriver to pop out the bolt covers on the airbag bolts, T30 for the airbag bolts themselves, aforementioned T55 for the main steering wheel bolt, a flashlight and some locktite.

Get in the car first, and while you've still got your battery connected, start the car and turn your wheel sideways

That will allow you to get at the airbag bolt covers easily, they are on the back of the wheel, here's a pic of the underside of the wheel so you can see what they look like:

On your car though they are covered with little protective covers that blend in with the steering wheel, you can see the cover marked by a slight color variation here:

Use a small screwdriver and just very gently pry at the edge, and the cover pops loose, and easily pulls out:

Then turn your wheel 180 degrees and repeat for the other side.

Next, open your trunk, lift up the spare tire well latch, and unscrew/lift out the donut tire

Take off the large plastic uber cover, and you can see the battery with its smaller plastic cover, disconnect the right (negative) cable with your 10mm wrench and put the battery cover back on to prevent the ground cable from touching the negative pole

Put your key in the slot and give it a minute to ensure any stored electricity is drained.

Now use your T30 socket and ratchet and unscrew the airbag bolts you uncovered, they unscrew but don't come out all the way, they've got retainer clips that prevent them from falling out when loosened. Once both sides are done, center your steering wheel (a little harder with the power off and no power steering, but no really a big deal). That will let you carefully lift the airbag assembly out, it's still connected by a wire, so lift part way out gently but hold it with your hand. That will let you get at the main airbag wiring clip, yellow with a green surround. It's spring-loaded so pull back on the green part and it will disconnect.

Next follow the wire down to the next connect, it is held in place by a pop-in/pop-out rubber mounting, so pop out the clip and separate it at the plug, very easy.

Now the airbag is separated and can be set aside

Next snap on your an extension with your T55 and wrench off the center bolt that holds the steering wheel on. As mentioned, it has locktite on the threads so it takes one pretty good tug-and-grunt and it will break free, then it screws off quite easily

Once the bolt is off, take your flashlight and look at the shaft the wheel sits on BEFORE you remove the wheel, it's got a little machine mark that lines up with one on the wheel, so its easy to line them back up when installing and make sure the wheel is correctly centered....Now just pull the wheel straight off, no effort needed.

Now that you've got both wheels off, you can put them on the bench in full light and swap the logos if you want, they just pry right out (gently with a small screwdriver) and are held on by little "push-in/Pull-out" nubs:

Now you can just reverse the procedure to put the wheel back on, I ran a VCDS scan at the end to check for any fault codes and came back clean, but just wanted to be safe since we're messing with airbags here....

    And the final look:

Feels great, just the right amount of "thicker"!

Just for accuracy....it's actually a 12mm triple square (ZXN12)....looks like a Torx but it isn't the same (12 points compared to 6). A T55 Torx might "work" but it's not the right tool for the job.

Looks better thank stock, but I still like the flat bottom wheel better. Great alternative for folks who want to reuse the stock airbag.

Well, yes. To me it's kinda like traditional 6 point vs 12 point sockets: In low torque applications a 12 point "outside" type socket is quite OK, just as an inside 6 point "torx" is ok in a triple square application of low torque. No defending it that the triple square is the perfect tool, just saying that a triple square of that size is special order and $28 bucks where I live, the T55 is $6, off the shelf and given the torque applied has zero rounding issues....

    HOWEVER, you are correct sir!

Good write-up. Did this last August. Took all of 10 minutes.

Bought the wheel from the same seller too, but he threw in the correct badge.

Just got around to installing the matching shift knob. Very happy with the matching combo.

Does disconnecting the battery cause any electronic issues? I don't have a VAG-COM, so I'm worried it may screw thins up and I won't be able to restore settings etc. Also, won't the radio 'code lock out' if the battery is disconnected? Sorry for the dumb questions, but I'm nowhere near as good at these things as you guys are...

Yup, super easy to do. Took me 15 min to put my flatbottom in... as long as you have the tools ready to go it takes no time at all..

So there were no issues with disconnecting the battery - except for the fact that I was stupid and closed the trunk onced I'd done it, and then couldn't get the boot open again! Solved the challenge by going in through the back seats and reconnecting the battery so I could open the trunk again. No need to tell me how stupid that was...

Great write up CiscoKidz!! Thanks mate...

Maybe we could have a DIY Tech Sub-Forum added to the B8 S4 forum, then these type of DIY posts could be placed there.

We already have too many sticky threads.

When you unplug the the battery to do swap, is there a chance that you will lose the settings for the radio and will need a radio code and such?

Heres a perfect thread to ask such a question, rather than bumping a 3 year old thread. Theres also a custom steering wheel thread thats more current. Anyway, I've swapped my steering wheel and disconnected the battery and nothing happened. Everything stayed just as it was before it was disconnected. YMMV.

I just did this swap on my 2012 A4 Avant.

The OP's instructions were excellent and took me about an hour, including putting the old wheel back together.

I would have finished in about 30 minutes, but I was swapping in a B8.5 flat-bottom wheel with the airbag that has the spring-loaded clips instead of the T30 screws and it was already inserted into the wheel when I received. This made it extremely difficult to get the new airbag out single-handedly so I could install the new wheel. Fortunately, a friend was nearby to help and we were able to get out with some coordinated effort.

If you receive a wheel with the spring-loaded airbag pre-installed, I would highly recommend having a friend assist getting the airbag out before beginning the swap.

Looks great! Like the fatter diameter. I guess that I am not the only one that doesn't like the feel of the flat bottom steering wheel. Looks great, but feels odd in your hands.

I have this exact wheel almost brand new; I used it for maybe a few months and it still looks nice and matte black. Also, already comes with the S4 badge. I upgraded to a smaller airbag wheel a long while ago so it's been stored ever since. Hit me up if anyone is interested.
